Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters - four young women each determined to live life on her own terms -- is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

    Amy truly loved Laurie for who he was. She saw his potential and encouraged him to grow up. She supported, understood and valued him. For him to be successful, Laurie needed a strong willed woman like Amy to motivate and inspire him. He found a true partner who wanted and loved the same things he wanted for his future.

    @Minnie With all due respect, I do not see that in modern women nowadays. Maybe if it was 30 years ago, I would agree with you. Which is why I prefer the 1994 version of the movie. Amy asks Jo to tell her the truth, since sisters are a stronger relation than marriage, if she minds that she and Laurie are married, and Jo tells her that she does not mind, that she was surprised at first, and that they were now family as they should have always been. This version, with this scene, just doesn't feel right to me.

    I just hate hate hate how they tried to make Jo more in love with Laurie than she was. With Bhaer she found an intellectual equal who challenged her to be her best and actually improved her writing with the knowledge from his own experience. He brought a peace and tranquillity to her fiery and restless spirit, without destroying her tenacity. I don’t believe she ever saw Laurie as someone she could marry, even when she was consumed with loneliness. I think it matters because this book is a classic, and while I still love this movie, i think they should have kept it true to the movie. But again that's my opinion and your free to have your own😊

    I think Amy and Laurie were meant for eachother. At the beginning I shipped Jo and Laurie but as you saw, Jo turned him down. Laurie had waited his entire life to be with her, he loved her truly but their relationship was just meant to be platonic in the end. Meanwhile on the other hand with Amy, she was always told to marry rich, I don't think that was truly what she wanted though. She had loved Laurie from the start but was a good sister, she saw how much Laurie cared about Jo and just backed off. She said it "I have been second to Jo my entire life" which was quite frankly true. In the end, where Jo sends the letter and talks to her mom about how she loves him and misses him, I think just a lot was going on in her life especially with Beth's pass. In all honesty I think she was just lonely and needed someone to rely on. She thought of Laurie since she knew he loved her before. She never loved him more than a platonic relationship, and was only in need of a distraction for a little while. The way Jo moved on so quickly is just showing that it was pure true love for Laurie. Like I said, she was just lonely without Beth, without Amy and Meg by her side, she grew sad and looked for Laurie. If you ship Jo and Laurie, you don't really understand the meaning of this movie at all.

    Really? I haven’t seen the 1994 one, but I’ve always felt Laurie loved Amy very deeply in this 2019 version. I never got the impression he didn’t. Rather, he had come to realize it and then understand it. It feels like a mature and happy love, with passion too.

    Really. If anything, the 2019 version is the one that gives the best description of Amy and Laurie. The 1994 version only barely glosses over the relationship between Laurie and Amy, especially when he says that he wants to be a part of the March family No matter what

  • @lechoduneparisienne5967

    @lechoduneparisienne5967

    I think it's the opposite. In the 1994 version, you get the impression that Laurie marries Amy mainly because he wants to be part of the March family. Whereas in this version, we really see the evolution of Laurie and Amy's relationship. She makes him better, she doesn't hesitate to set him straight demanding more of him. Whereas Jo was just accepting him as he was. They wouldn't have made each other happy. They were much better friends.

    I dont really know abput the story in the book, but as much as I preferred this couple instead of Laurie and Jo, but isn't it kinda shady that Laurie was always attracted to Jo most of his life and then after being rejected suddenly jumped to Amy? I don't get the development of the character. It's kinda not fair for Amy when she literally attracted/ love him since the first time they met. Correct me if I'm wrong 🙂

  • @foundsomethinggood691

    I know it seems sudden, but in the book it's clear that a long time passes. Laurie first travels through Europe alone, then he meets Amy and hangs out with her all the time, they exchange letters when he goes away again and overall, Jo is just not suited to be a lady of high society while Amy already knows the drill. Amy and Laurie getting together seems like a natural conclusion to me.

    So if someone falls in love with you, he's your property for the rest of your life even if you turn him down? I don't get it. Why should Amy be the least bit sorry for loving someone that Jo never wanted? I never got it why Amy felt sorry and apologised. Love is too huge a deal to be petty about.
