I wish Lauren Bacall had won the Academy Award that night. She looked disappointed but at least she was nominated. She loved her cigarettes but lived to 89 anyway. What a long, interesting, and colorful life. R.I.P. I will miss her.

She was truly lucky her lungs survived all that nicotine. Bogey was a chain smoker and I believe he died from esophageal cancer at 57, relatively young by today's standards. I loved reading her first autobio, esp her delicate friendship with Katherine Hepburn, who was not the easiest person to get along with. The book goes into the ups and downs of their long friendship. A fascinating read !

A win would have been a great career-capper. It went to Juliette Binoche, who probably won’t be anywhere near as well remembered….she’ll have the Oscar, but Bacall has the legend.

Lauren Bacall accomplished quite a lot. She managed to carve out a stellar stage career when her film career faded. Her autobiography was very well written and very entertaining. It still holds up and is not a dated read. Bacall seems to have had a great capacity for friendship and I give her credit. Her friendships lasted decades. She maintained her friendships. Her children did not turn out to be drug addicts or brats. Unfortunately, her love life (after Bogart) was a string of difficulties and disappointments. However, she was strong. She did not implode. She did not get lost in self-destructive behaviors. She was a survivor. She remained positive and kept going. She kept working. She loved to work.

They offered class in public. But in general they were no different from most stars today (with of course glaring exceptions). Both Bacall and Bogart had affairs, as did many, many others. I mean, even JUNE ALLYSON had an affair while married to Dick Powell...

I don’t think it was rude. It was a legitimate question because the academy very often gives an Oscar to an actor who has done great work over the years, yet somehow gets overlooked. Paul Newman. Alan Arkin. And Glenn Close hadn’t won yet, despite being more worthy than some of her competitors. She’ll get one eventually, and interviewers will ask the same question Barbara did.

After Barbara asks her about winning the Oscar, Bacall replies: "There are no guarantees in my profession. Very often something comes out of left field....." Was she right ! On Oscar night, Bacall was upset by Juliette Binoche's "out from left field" win for Best Supporting Actress in "The English Patient". Binoche's screen time was actually more like an actress, not supporting. I recently went back and rented "Mirror Has Two Faces" again and Bacall's performance was so subtle yet left an indelible impression. She really deserved that Oscar no matter if you liked her as a person. There are many in LA and NY who dislike Bacall after working with her. Some say her unpopularity may have cost her the Oscar.

The utter audacity to have had Barbara Streisand recite the line, “How did it feel to be beautiful?” As if she’s not absolutely stunning!

@@WordWoman111 Illustrating my point. And why do you think she was cast to play such a character? Why would someone of her specific features be typecast to play “ugly duckling”/“odd girl out” roles? Think it over a while; maybe you will come to some answers.

If you're a Streisand fan, you know since childhood she's always had a complex about her own looks, she always saw herself as an ugly duckling. That's why the "Mirror" script attracted her interest so much. Streisand has held out against plastic surgery, esp on her nose against the advice of many in Hollywood. How ironic in her 70's she broke that rule and got a face lift. If you Google pics of Streisand now you would not recognize her, and that's saying it nicely.

I heard years ago that she resisted getting a nose job because of what that might do to her singing voice. She was smart. And she didn't need it. Sinatra got a nose job in the early 1940's (Jerry Lewis told that story), but Frank was fortunate

Streisand has actually had work done. She was photographed leaving a hospital after cosmetic surgery, wearing a veiled hat, sometime, if I recall correctly, in the 90s. It was unmistakably her. She's never admitted it, but it seems she had a her neck and possibly eyes done, not a full facelift. The thing is: she was smart. She had just enough done so that it didn't look too obvious, and she hasn't risked repeated procedures in an attempt to look as though she's still 30something. Which is why she looks great still at 80.

@@garybennett1070 I am a big Lauren Bacall fan (her voice is so sultry!). The reference is that in 2009 when Farrah Fawcett died they did not include her in the "In Memoriam" segment. However they included Michael Jackson who is in far less movies. I do find your comment funny though! Farrah is so underrated but she is no Meryl Streep lol.
