Thank you for this video Sean! I would love to see the whole island growing this plant! I love to use the big leaves in smoothies. Its mild flavor doesn't overpower like kale and spinach can, and it creates a great texture!

It’s so easy to use

Laupele was only adopted across a larger audience, particularly Samoa and Tonga, due to the significant kalo crop losses that depleted supply of kalo by upwards of 90%. Laupele was seen as one of the only viable substitutes for lū'au (taro leaves) at the time. Laupele might be considered nutritious, but it's a lot harder to work with and process because of the higher levels of calcium oxalates that require longer and more tedious preparation. It's texture is also a lot more slimy, similar to okra, which can be very unappealing. It also requires significantly more irrigation than other vegetable crops that are a lot more easy to cultivate and that have higher nutritional profiles; i.e. chaya and moringa.

Not yet. I just like kalo leaf so much, but I heard it was used as a replacement for a while when the taro was having pest issues

Cause people suck, it really it’s about ease of maintenance and mosquitoes. A cleared lot is easier to mow and more airflow is less mosquitoes

You mean edible hibiscus? Yeah it gets kinda funny with the “Havvai’ian” names for things.. You know that Havvai’ian chilis are actually “candle light” peppers, no? 🌶️

I did not know about the name for peppers but I figured there was another name
