That's great! Thanks for the sub too! I love my Retron 77's(I have 2!), and play them all of the time. Since you're a sub and may catch my videos, I'm having a weekly contest for Atari 2600 games. It's my "Retro Bliss Ninja" contest. I pick two games a week for you to play and get your high score. You send me your picture, and whoever gets the high score is the Retro Bliss Ninja for the game, and I send them a little something... similar to what Activision used to do with the patches. I announce the games every Monday on my live stream. This week's games are Dig Dug and Keystone Kapers. I’m glad! Have fun with it… I have two of them, and they are my “go to”, unless I’m playing on my 2600. It’s a better option than the Flashbacks or any other emulators I’ve seen. Thanks for watching! I’ll check the link… it may have changed.

I'm glad you posted this. I followed someone else's tutorial, which was an older video, and it ended up making my Retron not work. Every game freezes after about a minute. I'm about to try your process instead. Wish me luck.

Update: Same thing happened. I followed your instructions from start to finish, and all the games freeze after about a minute. I can see the games, I can see the previews, and I can select a game, but once played it eventually freezes and no buttons on the front or back make the game unfreeze.

I have a feeling that your Retron 77 Is defective. It works just fine for me. I have two Retron 77s(orange and black), and I’ve done the update for others with no issues.

​@@RetroBlissGaming I found a thread on Atari Age. Apparently there is faulty DRAM on some units, and running the newest version of Stella on those units causes them to crash. It's because the newest version stresses the DRAM more. I may have to downgrade to an older version of Stella.

I was able to install Stella 3.9.4 and everything is working now. All did different with the process is flash using an older image file. Thanks.

Hello, nice tutorial! I just wanted to know, if I follow all the steps and run into errors if I could delete it and make it back into how it was previously? (The SD card) I don’t want to mess it up or anything.

I would use a separate SD card to do the flash. That way, you can always just use the stock SDcard if you somehow mess up the update. Hope that helps!

Can I use a blank new SD card? If I put the latest edition firmware on it, along with the games as you direct, will it still work? If I do download new firmware, does that mean I don’t need to “image” games files? Pardon me if my question is elementary😊.

The last updated “image” from the Stella site needs to be “flashed” on a Fat32 formatted micro sdcard. You will lose all info on that card. Once flashed, then you add your games.

Hello, I recently purchased a Retron 77 and updated the firmware to the latest Stella, I am facing a problem, when I connect two Retron gamepads, the system recognizes 1 Joystick and the other as paddle which makes it impossible to play 2 player games. Can you please make a video on how to setup the Retron 77 to recognize 2 players when connecting 2 Retron gamepads so we could play 2 players properly? Thanks in advance.

So if you did the update, you should be able to change the controller settings in Stella. It’s fairly simple. There are tutorials for Stella on KZread already, but if for some reason this isn’t the problem, then it may be the version of firmware. It is Stella 6.6, and it is behind the current version of 6.7. The developers have paused updating the Retron 77 to the latest Stella for now. And paddle function for controllers is virtually nonexistent with 6.6. Hyperkin will not support the new firmware with their paddle/joystick controller combo. So your best bet is to just stick with joystick games with this update.

@@RetroBlissGaming thank you for the valuable info, I don't need paddles for it is possible to make them work thru USB Y adapter and 2600-daptor II, my problem is that the system is detecting the second Hyperkin Ranger gamepad as "Paddle" when I plug in 2 game pads in the front ports. I might try downgrading Stella to an earlier version, it might fix the problem I don't know..

I'm wondering if someone could help me with a problem I'm having with my Retron 77. I'm not getting any picture on it when I plug it into an HDMI port. I've tried numerous ports on both TVs I have. Don't know what's going on.

Unfortunately, the only thing I could think to try would be to check the solder connections on the board. Are you getting just a blank screen? Did you do the update on it also? It may be possible that your sdcard may be bad. It’s hard to say.

When was this firmware update? It still can’t play Paddles properly when I updated a couple months ago. So bummed. Everything else’s runs great!

Paddles still do not work. I don’t know if Stella can fix this with an update. It’s unfortunate.

Do paddles work when plugging in a cart properly? I know using roms and community firmware Borks the paddles. Was curious if using carts on the updated firmware makes any difference?

The process can easily be done on a Linux or MAC computer. Nothing about writing an SD card image unique to Windows.

Since the image is directly in the SD card, I would say that maybe the SD card may be corrupt. You may want to try it with a different SD card and see if that helps.
