I think it’s pretty awesome that Atari is bringing the 2600 back like this. Other console companies should do the same with their products. There is a ton of potential in official re-releases of older systems, conttollers and games.

I think you've put me over on getting a 2600+ . I have a non-functional 7800 and a ton of games for it that has just been sitting for decades. Basket brawl just might be my favorite basketball genre game ever.

hey john, cool update.. yes i preordered the joypad over 6 months ago and no word as of yet on ship date urgh. i have about 10 products still waiting to be shipped, one of them mr run and jump limited edition, which i've been waiting 10 months for. Mr Poeatyle and I did an 'atari support group meeting' episode for that atari show airing on 6/10, we want our products haha ;D

The joypad was announced on Jan 24th (for order this week or next) so not quite 6 months. Now the XP stuff has been absurd!

In an interview with Ben Jones of Plaion, the creator of Atari 2600+, on The Retro Hour podcast, episode 410, he spoke favorably about the idea of the possibility of creating an Atari 5200 cartridge adapter in the future for the Atari 2600+. So we may be seeing that eventually.

Great to see OEM Atari, is giving love to Atari 2600 (My first console!) with a modern re release in 2024, great review my friend John Hancock, already own a Retron77 but seriously considering to get a 2600 plus, don't need to get one, but I want one of these 🎉😃

I think they should make a modified Atari 7800 game pad with extra buttons or left and right keys on the top just like we've had modified 2600 joy sticks.

For any viewers in the UK, I was disappointed when on Atari's site it said "available worldwide" for the 7800 controller, but when I clicked on the item it said shipping within US only, however then discovered Amazon UK are selling them exclusively in the UK for £20.00...not bad! You can also pre-order the games. Wish they would release Dark Chambers, Midnight Mutants and Super Skateboardin' though, those are the big-hitters I'm missing =)

Hope the new Atari plays their cards right and avoid an Embracer Group situation. Play it slightly safe, don’t go overblown with buyouts - and if a buyout happens, buy studios/IP strategically (as in they can actually manage and do something with them). Just bought Atari 50 and it’s pretty fun so far.

has anyone tried the 7800 version of PETSCII Robots with the new firmware update? Does it work? Very curious if a cart like that will work with the new firmware

I assume you can’t do the space invaders double shot trick since it loads the game. Basically when you turn the 2600 on while holding reset the game will start the game with double shots.

I grew up with the Atari and was my first console that I remember most. However, the primitive graphics have not aged well to say the least. There is some nostalgia there for me, but the games look and play so bad. I just can’t get into them again. It’s sad because would love to relive those experiences again, sadly, it was at a primitive time in gaming and aren’t worth reliving. At least for me. thankfully, I do have the NES memories and that is where my nostalgia and gaming continues to this day.

After 33 years a non $300 uk cx78 controller

I'd really like to get the modern Atari VCS they released a couple of years ago, but for whatever reason, it's only available for purchase in the US and I'm in the UK, so my only option is to search for an eBay listing that will ship across the Atlantic. 😕

Hopefully they ship soon. I made a purchase of multiple of these items back in January, and they said expected to ship in May, but nothing yet. Here’s to hoping it’ll come around soon.

They need to make an update on when those special edition Run n Jump carts will actually get released? They released the regular editions some time ago but left the original backers hung out to dry and as 1 of them, I did not like that at all. I preordered all the items you shown except the paddles and extension cable but also preordered Ninja Golf. I am hoping they re-release Mean 18 though

I hope we one day get rereleases of Atari 2600/7800 games NOT owned by Atari or Activision!

I'm really hoping all of those Champ Games cartridges end up working on the 2600+. Once they do, I can put my old hardware away for good.

I would love a 5200. With improved controllers.

The extension cable doesn't make much sense to me personally. You still need to use the switches on the console itself for almost every game. I keep the console close to me so I don't have to keep getting up.

What about the keypad for star raiders? The keypad didn't work before.

Nope, only the latest is needed, but update at your own risk.

I have an Atari flashback X that my fiancée surprised me with one day after work. So, it has sentimental value and I honestly can’t afford getting another system right now, so I will try to make it work for me. I do wish there was a way to play other games on it though…(One day I’d love a catridge system) but my question is, do you think that extension cord will fit the controllers on the flashback X? And do you know if the paddles and other controller types would be compatible? Its kindof frustrating that Atari (maybe through another company) came out with so many similar systems back to back over the years only adding a few more games at a time. The X is pretty cool though because its an adorable tiny real looking Atari with real metal switches, and, well, she gave it to me.

Atgames did the Flashback consoles. There is a subforum link on Atariage which discusses ways to add games to various Flashback consoles.

I knew ..when I was youngster...and sad as Atari sinked and I was weeping about that....that Atari would strike back and save me as I was getting older and older, but inside still a teenager no matter what life became!

I'm really glad to hear about the Pitfall II compatibility. That was one of the biggest cons of the 2600+ as that's one of my favorite games.

It's too bad that the paddles won't work on the vcs.

If it still won't work with flash carts like the harmony it's still no good and a definite deal breaker and a reason to Never Buy it.

as a 44 years old gamer, i am sick to death on how many times i seen the 2600 getting support, good lord, who are we kidding ? i grew up on it , we loved it because that was all we had, but please, for the love of Allah almighty, they should let it go, there is tons of better systems to support, i would sacrifice both nuts for a lynx and a jaguar.
