Lateen Rig sailboat details and interview | Lateen Sail | Latin-rig | Vela Latina

Ойын-сауық

Many asked for more info on the Lateen rig sailboat from my last video so here it is!
I went out with Bruno aboard Princesa do Tejo,a lateen rigged traditional fishing boat, while sailing Bruno told me a bit more about Princesa's history and specs as well as explained some sail controls.
Not much wind but we managed to explore a bit of the estuary which goes right into town, where we had a nice expresso coffee!
On the way back, some photos of Lisbon in the old days, and some food and beer!
I had the pleasure of taking Princesa all the way home...
Great day!

@@TheBoatRambler While we’re absorbing knowledge it’s important to remember that ‘Marconi’ is not synonymous with ‘Bermudan’, even in the US! ‘Bermudan’ refers to the triangular shape of the mainsail. ‘Marconi’ refers to the way that the mast is stayed. There’s a more detailed explanation in the dictionary associated with the Cambridge School of Navigation website. btw, It’s ‘espresso’ not ‘expresso’!

I think I get it now.... You de-power the mainsail in strong winds by having the yard run as parallel to the wind as possible, using the two (staysails) lines at the bow with the Jib set and rear halyard at the stern .... So, theoretically , you don't have to reef much , unless it gets really rough out. In theory anyway. ...

  • @TheBoatRambler

Hi Roon! There isn't much tradition of reefing sails around here. If it's a regatta the skippers just get crew onboard to help with high winds. If it get's too much they will use the Orças (preventers) to induce twist on the top of the sail or use the brailling lines to temporarily reduced sail area for jibing. Outside the races in high winds if it gets too much they just lower main and sail with Jib and Mizzen. After all these are only 29ft work boats with almost 60sqm of sail area, shallow keels and no ballast whatsoever.😉

Having read about the rigging on Arab, African and Indian Dhows. There are interesting differences. While they have an equivalent to the Cairo, their equivalent to the orssas seem to lead to the top of the yard instead of the bottom. And instead of dipping the yard and shifting it behind the mast to bring it to the other side (when done) they instead release the sheet and walk the sail and yard over the front and top of the mast to the other side.

@@TheBoatRambler I assume the differences in local conditions would affect how the people of one region would rig their boats, even if they technically have the same type of sail (a Lateen). From the videos on your channel I've noticed that the sails and yards of the lateen rigged boats in that region are set inside the stays/shrouds. On the other hand whenever I see a video of a dhow, be it Arabian, African or Indian. Their sail looks like they are set outside the stays/shrouds.

Hi Galgo. there is not really a tradition of reefing around here although some boats have reef lines. Usually if there is a regatta in strong winds the boats will go full sail and take plenty of crew, if they are out just for fun and are caught in strong winds they will use the brailing lines to reduce sail area until they can get the main sail down and proceed with Mizzen and Staysail only. And if needed they will use outboards just to reach the closest port. These are traditional boats the last thing the skippers want is to sail them to destruction...😉 As for my tattoo make a search for "canoa Alma do Tejo", it's a boat similar to Princesa which I used to race on for a few years. She's actually in a few of my videos but like in the background... or try this facebook.com/watch/?v=917642678648828

Vela Latina is absolutely beautiful and charming to me but is something which deeply annoy me. The videos I have seen, present the boats when the canvas is fully pushed by wind, the speed is great and very little when the canvas is against the mast. I believe you when stating that is performing better than gaff rig but the anooyance with most of the videos is that they usually present their boats at the best moments when sailing and make me think that they hide a lot, presenting only what is ....perfect. Thank you very much for your time and trouble to answer my questions.

Dude you need to go research a bit more... There are paintings of lateen sails as early as the second century, Portugal wasn't even an idea yet. "The next breakthrough in sea travel came as early as the second century, with the invention of the lateen sail. Lateen sails were developed by the Arabs, then adopted in the eastern Mediterranean. Because they were used in the Mediterranean, northern sailors gave them the name "lateen" from "Latin." A lateen sail is a triangular piece of cloth. "
