Lateen Rigged Sailboat, new sails

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Princesa do Tejo got a new set of sails including Main sail, Jib and Mizzen sail.
A Lateen rigged sailboat with new sails is something else! The first time it fills the sails...the sound it makes...Awesome! 🙃
These traditional sailing boats can really go when properly setup.
The sails were made by PL Sails, the same sail maker that made my Goat Island Skiff's sail.
Pedro's sails are well known in Portugal within the racing community and are top quality sails.
On the 17th of October Princesa will have the first regatta with the new sails and I will be aboard again. Make sure not to miss the video here on my channel.

  • @TheBoatRambler

    @@josephlai9759 I'm planning to make a full Princesa's rigging video next season, including the brails. The only time we use the brails underway is in really strong winds, running, when we are about to jibe. Just before the jibe we pull two brail lines temporarily to reduce sail area at the top. If we are not in a regatta we just reef or even sail with just staysail and mizzen.

    Thank you for your reply, I obtained the sailcloth weights from the German Dimension-Polyant ( D-P ) catalogue, to ensure they were correct crossed referenced them to other sailcloth manufactures data sheets. Here in the UK we generally use the US measurement rather than the metric measurement, we discontinued using the UK method many years ago. If your sailmakers used the D-P 320 they used an excellent quality as similar to all other manufacturers D-P has several different ranges. As you may guess I am a sailmaker and own and run R.& J. Sails in the UK.

    @@TheBoatRambler I took special interest in your new sails as I have been sewing my own in the last several weeks. You did seem to go well to windward. Did you notice much difference in how she points up from Starboard to Port? Looks like the mast disrupts the sail shape on starboard tack, I mean I know that it is designed that way and normal but does it move you off the wind more so than on port tack?

    Yes it is a really big difference from previous worn out sails. Every time a gust hit us the boat would bury the gunwales in the water but it wouldn't accelerate fast enough, causing excessive heeling!

    Thank you! Around here winds are usually between 6-14kts with gusts to 15-22. There are rougher days but since reefing isn't really popular around here ppl tend to not go out once the wind reaches 15kts or gusts over 20kts. Princesa's previous sail was actually 4Oz!! She weights around 4000Kg.

    A very interesting video but a 320gram ( grams per square metre ) sailcloth weighs 7.3USoz, ( 28" wide x 36" ) or 9.2UKoz ( 33" x 36" ) Looking at your boat they probably used the 320gram cloth

  • @TheBoatRambler

    @TheBoatRambler

    no, the lateen rig carries more sail than a lug rig for the same mast height. Imagine just prolonging the yard on a lug all the way to deck level. That's how much more sail you can carry on a lateen rig. Lateen sail also points better than lug or gaff.

    4:00 I thought a big traditional lateen like this had to be moved from side to side at each tack, the same as the closely-related dipping lug, so that the sail/yard were always on the downwind side of the mast. Why is this one not, then?

  • @TheBoatRambler

    @TheBoatRambler

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi David. Just like with lug sails not all lateen sails have to be set on leeward side. Yes it could be possible but it would require some changes. On Princesa the yard portion ahead of the mast is too long, to swing it to the other side it would have to be either set higher, creating more heeling forces, or moved back which would mean a bigger jib would have to be set at all times to compensate for weather helm.And still one would need a trained crew to do the job quickly as it is not an easy task specially in strong winds. The difference in performance is negligible and not worth it. You can see in one of my videos ( "BREEZY") the lug sails on different tacks performing just as well...

    Tacking the yard is only feasible on small boats and if the forward part of the yard is shorter than the mast. On small Catalan boats, they lift the mast while another sailor swings the yard! Even old professional sailors avoided to do it. Before departing, they set up the rig to have the sail on leeward side for the expected wind, so they sailed "a la bona" most of the time and only went "a la bruta" for short legs.

  • @TheBoatRambler

    Hi Joel. One of the guys here had a boat in the same class as Princesa and he would sometimes swing the yard around the mast in calm conditions just to show off. It is possible in some boats but it's not practical and it's dangerous in strong winds.
