He literally came out signing. He made it his show without overshadowing Dave. Regis was an amazing talent.

I remember watching this when it first aired. The opening song was oddly memorable, even as Regis wasn't a tremendous singer. Still had that onscreen presence though. No one living or dead has ever been in front of a TV camera more than Regis. He and Dave were great friends and he was a perfect guest host while Dave was out sick with shingles.

One of a kind entertainer! Got a warm feeling after watching him. Thanks for the laughs, the up lifts when blue, and helping entertain generations!!! RIP job well done, life well lived. Condolences to all those he loved and cherished.

This is so bittersweet to watch.

He wasn't a comedian, but he was naturedly a funny guy and what a conversationalist . How cud anyone that talked to him not like him?

Thanks so much for sharing this. Regis was a gem. (PS: I’d never seen Greg Giraldo before, and I thought he was a scream!) RIP, dear Regis.

Gosh I remember this and all the guest hosts Letterman had. I wish instead of reruns today they would bring back the guest host.

That's why Regis was special because he wasn't a comedian but he was naturally funny humorous and charming personality and loves his family ,wife Joy

It maybe bittersweet; but doesn't it make you smile or laugh every time?

What a class act! It’s so nice to see a performance where a man is singing 🎤 without constantly grabbing his package! There will never be another Regis. We will never forget you! 🙏❤️

So, we know Dave had come down with a case of shingles, but why wasn't Paul there? Did he have one of those "I don't work with guest hosts" deals in his contract like Ed McMahon had with Carson?

Ed McMahon did work with guest hosts.

@@GeorgiaOverdrive At first, yes. But from the mid 80s on he had it stipulated in his contract that he only worked with Carson. That gave Ed the time to do other shows like Star Search, Bloopers & Practical Jokes and all those corporate/endorsement gigs.

An absolute disaster for any singer is when the audience claps along, either ahead or behind the beat.

If there was ever a show that needed a hard hitting loud comic to save it from being the worst episode of 2003, this was it.
