Her parents are still in denial that their daughter is deaf - by refusing to accommodate her needs, they can continue to pretend it never happened and life can go on as it always had for them. They are grieving and can’t move forward.

Should've gone to therapy... it's been, what? Almost ten years since the car accident that caused their daughter's hearing loss. Never mind that she could've DIED... but, naaaaa learning (at least) the f'n ASL alphabet & turning on the CC is "too much work". Fuck that noise.

Kudos for this young woman. Too bad the parents will miss out on the rest of her life if they don't change their perspective and 'find' some time to learn ASL. Unfortunately, this is the sad case of so many children too whose parents refuse to learn or think they are doing 'just fine' at home without direct language access. At least she had a foundation of language. Children cannot make that decision to cut ties with their parents, etc. while they are young.

i like how here parents accuse her of cutting them off, when by refusing to learn sign, her parents have already cut her off in a way. at least she has been able to seek refuge in the deaf community.

Met few parents like that even hearing GF or BF refused do same for their lovers… want relationships?? Have some respect for loved one!! Learn ASL!!

I agree with u. I've met some hearing parents who were like that. That is why I call them as strange species people.

I'm ashamed of her parent! I'm so sorry that parent have no respect.

I’m HOH and wear hearing aids. My hearing has diminished over the years. Because I do have residual hearing and can speak, my wife and children didn’t learn sign. It wasn’t a refusal on their part, it just wasn’t necessary. However, in this case, the parents could meet her halfway and make even a feeble attempt at learning SOME sign, even if it’s just fingerspelling. Wow. Yet for those of us who know people in the deaf community, it’s often the case that their families do not sign or can make basic signs but never truly engage.

Tell her parents to shut up! Then learn ASL sign language 😊🙏🤟 my father was same way when I was little about 3 yrs old but mom did in ABC sign language.this is love ♥️
