Last Dream Theater show with Mike Portnoy - Chiba Japan 2010

Mike Portnoy's last show in Dream Theater was the Summersonic Festival in Chiba, Japan, August 8th, 2010. Nobody has been able to find pro-shot videos from this show other than A Rite Of Passage and Wither, but there are some bootleg recordings, including this audio recording of the full show:

Mike Mangini is a great drummer and we all should be thankful with him for going ahead with Dream Theater (I think the best album with Mangini is A view from the top of the world). But Mike Portnoy was/is more than a drummer for the band. He is musically rich and adds music to the band. I hope better times for Dream Theater from now on. He is part of the soul of the band.

Mike Portnoy is not just a drummer for DT he is everything what classic DT should sound, he provides showmanship, he lift the presence of the entire group with their live shows,. the groove he creates is palatable without diminishing its technicalities. • @mrjacob0101

NMB has something that largely misses from Dream Theater and that is being melodic AND techny at the same time! I'm pretty sure Petrucci can play whatever Gilette plays but Eric tends to be the more interesting musician to my ears. And don't let me start on vocals, LaBrie sucks for the past 20 years at least while Morse sounds exactly the same as in the Spock's Beard days and Eric is even better. I am very biased about the keyboards because I don't like them in DT at all and Neal Morse is one of my favourites of all time, along with Bill Hubauer! NMB is much much more than Mike Portnoy, but when I saw them live in the Innocence and Danger tour, my eyes were glued in him for the first set at least.

Obviously every one of them is a stunning musician (although the singing gets tedious...), but Portnoy was the only one of them with character and personality that came across to the audience. That is a large reason why bands like Rush and The Beatles are so loved. They have personality. Myung, Petrucci and Rudess play like robots. Portnoy 'plays' when he plays. He was the only reason I'd bother going to a DT concert.

@@thomaslentino9940 Very true mate, I did completely misread your comment. Yes, I remember the Weakest Link. Here in the UK we had an especially cold and obnoxious host - Anne Robinson. The message you quoted delivered by her was twice as painful, more like twisting a blade in the contestant's kidney. Still, LaBrie's singing can be as painful 😂

Luckily we have Sons of Apollo. Way better than this whining.
