I agree, the hands and the style, Holmes was about as close to Ali as you will ever see, he couldn't (or didn't) move his head and upper body like a prime Ali though.

This was a free fight. AWESOME!

Ken Norton Heavyweight Champion who never won a title fight. Then again the judges didn't do him favors.

Larry definetly won...landed many more punches and was the more aggressor getting off first more often

This was as good a Heavyweight Title fight as you'll ever see. I mean there was virtually no clinching and holding like we see in so many fights. Both Men just gave there all and it could have went either way. I remember watching this fight. People forget that Going into 1978 Larry was 26-0 and He had to fight Earnie Shavers in March of 78. Leon Spinks was getting title shot against Ali in Feb of 78. Ken Norton had defeated Jimmy Young in November of 77 in an elimination match. Leon Spinks only had 7 fights but he was a gold Medalist and a name. Larry had been a top 10 Heavyweight but Ali had no interest in fighting Holmes. Even when Ali regained the WBA Title from Spinks He retired shortly after. He didn't start calling out Holmes until two years later because He needed money. This fight though between Holmes and Norton was between the two best fighters in 1978. Muhammad Ali didn't really want to fight Norton for a fourth time. That's why he took the Spinks fight because he was delaying it as long as he could. This was Norton's last hurrah as he was never the same after this fight. He would only have a couple more wins as he would suffer devastating first round knockout losses to Earnie Shavers and Gerry Cooney. Larry would go on to be recognized as Heavyweight Champion for the next 7 years making 20 successful title defenses before losing a close decision to Michael Spinks in September of1985.

That was the definition of Professional Boxing 🥊 WOW They were fighting they gave it all they had you can’t ask for anything more. You had it all in this one mercy I am glad to have been born in the 60s and grew up in this era .Two pro athletes giving it there all . Two of the Greatest!!!❤

I remember this fight my friends and I were yelling at the top of our lungs throughout the fight. That 15th round was the best...

Norton was a tuff customer!Just never gave up!

i always feel sad for norton...he was a great fighter, but a great nice man, and he fought everyone, and i think his problem was his style...but he put on such a great performance in so many fights with so many greats. then he went broke and had a car accident...he deserves maximum respect.

Yes your right Kenny fought the best. His style was to come forward in his crab like position. And he would give guys like Ali. And Holmes trouble every night of the week because they were not Big heavy punchers. He couldn't last 2 rounds with the heavy hitters like Foreman. Cooney. And shavers.

In my opinion, Larry Holmes is the greatest heavy weight champion ever. Going into the 14 round this fight was close. Norton was winning the 14 round. 14 seconds to go in the fight. Holmes took it to Norton. I never saw a fighter win a fight with 14 seconds to go. Without a knockout. Holmes was a hellva champion 🏆.

Criss Cross defense left him vulnerable with the dragging his right foot. Ken Norton left side of his head was open.

Imagine. We got to watch these incredible heavyweight title matchups on FREE TV. We turned off the volume to shut up Cosell.

Had to work that night. Had my brother audio recording on cassette. It was exciting just listening to Costello. Now it was one of the best fights I’ve seen. By the way Norton should have the fight.

Yeah. One loss to Ali and ppl act like that certainly makes Ali better. But if they both fight the same guys and one puts them down in 2 and the other takes 2 matches, then why wouldn’t George be better? Plus he was not as prepared as he should’ve been for Ali.

Had not seen this fight till today. Norton was powerful, Holmes took his best shots and out jabbed him. Norton was a much better fighter than I thought.

i think he had it in him to do it….but his fight strategy went against him….should have moved on Larry early IMO

When Ken Norton gets off the stool at the start of a round, it looks like a guy going off to work.

This is Ali’s sparring partner vs Fraziers sparring partner great fight

I had Holmes sweeping the first 6 rounds. He also took 12, 13. Round 15 was really a toss-up. I gave it to Norton despite a big rally by Holmes near the end of the round. Kenny lost too many of the early and mid-rounds. It was just too deep a hole for him to climb out of.

Don't think people understand boxing if they thought Norton won, he wasn't even close. He did clearly win the Ali fight at Yankee stadium though, thought that was robbery. But this he needed a K.O after the 10th, let alone the 13th which was two point round to Holmes.

@@leewilliams6673 I know the "official scores" and they are SO accurate all time. Just like the Cooney v Holmes cards. In this case Holmes took the first 7, drew 9 won 10, hence fight over unless like Holmes hater Cosel said before the last bell "I don't agree with Bill (Slayton) I think a knockout is the only way to win..." Never mind what Wikipedia tells you, it really wasn't close as Ali-Norton 2 or 3. Norton was 35 by then and never got over the Yankee Stadium decision, he even said straight after the fight he let him build up a big lead and left it too late. After more decades than I care to admit being a student and a scholar of boxing, scoring a fight fairly, with the biased commentators on and off (it's amazing what they can sell) if you can count to 8, especially if it only takes you 10 rounds to get there that's all. I admit it was tough but that close, nah. It was a way to give even rounds to the champion, that's all In my opinion, I think Holmes was hard done by, lined up a fight with Young (who should have been the champ, think he squeaked past Norton in a much closer fight) but he lost twice to Occasio, who Holmes beat while waiting to give Norton another chance if he too could beat Shavers, but fought Earnie again instead. Yes these are my opinions, and that's all. Holmes won this by 4 points minimum, 5 if you give round 13 2pts to Holmes. However if some people are niave to think Ali really knocked out Liston in the rematch with the superb pretend acting by Liston rolling over and over with a right that couldn't ever be replicated in any other fights, then I'm happy to be honest to myself, and not a fanboy of Ali, Holmes or Tyson. Holmes is the only one who never gets enough credit, and the other two get far too much. (As Boxers,)

What a great Fight, Norton never stopped coming on & I feel if Kenny had used his Jab from the get go he'd have Won tremendous effort by Norton.

I thought this fight should have been a draw. It was a great fight.

Holmes left jab was accurate, fast and sharp. In heavyweight history it compares with Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali.

1 point difference on all 3 cards. Can't get much closer. Could have been a draw or a Norton win. Norton got better shots in. Norton seems not to have a problem with decision

Norton landed heavier shots all night. Cosell biased toward Holmes. Norton won 9-5-1.

From what I’ve read it was professional. Norton had what Holmes wanted(the WBC World Title)

That fight could've went either way, but Holmes stood toe to toe, at times in the mid to later rounds Holmes looked much like Ali.

Again watch carefully. Norton hurt Holmes with a left jab. As Cosell was talking about something else. Merchant says he was hurt. Holmes did a little circle. My point is Norton winning round 1

Ali was awesome, but he got gifted at least one decision against Norton, maybe two. Larry Holmes genuinely beat Norton. It was a war but he beat him,

larry great but ken got robbed. larry came on in the last 40 seconds. i watched all three fights with norton ali and he won all three but only got one decision
