I think maybe Bill Maher was always a shitbag but I grew up and developed an adult conscience and morality. But it's also true that being wealthy rots your brain, so it's probably both.

Yeah when i was a teenager in the 90's I used to love politically incorrect because he generally had decent takes on issues and had on interesting guests and the debates were often entertaining and informative. Fast forward and he has become Grandpa Simpson screaming at the sun because he doesn't understand anything any more and refuses to take the onion off his belt (as was the style at the time).

The empathetic opinion that some folks can’t easily transition to, or are having problems with, new ideas is a nice sentiment but new ideas or new cultural trends don’t have merit just because they are “new”. Directions we take as a culture or society can be horribly wrong. Maher is obsessed and needs to get over the term but his fixation is merited, the stuff going on online and in the public sphere makes for some grim rubbernecking indeed.

*Instead of asking for the copyright-monopolies, or whatever the ell you think the words “master-tapes” means, advocate that:* All types of intellectual property (IP) laws must be fully abolished immediately, in any and all jurisdictions worldwide. All IP laws are extremely unethical for humankind. As an aside, IP laws were relatively young at Karl Marx’s time. He was unaware of how they worked, so he didn’t address them at all or about how they negatively affect the working class. Against Intellectual Monopoly is the most informative book humanity has on the subject now. Against Intellectual Property is another incredible essay, but it’s written from a right-libertarian perspective so if you’re leftist like me you’ll have to read with an open mind and extract what’s helpful. _Only_ these two texts are the gold standard when it comes to intellectual property.

Tim is a comedic genius, and Maher is smug and repugnant. But Tim's anaphylactic mockery of perspectives even slightly diverging from the far left is clouding his vision. "Wokeism," as it has come to be defined, is indeed a religion and ripe for satire. Larry Charles would be the perfect director for a mockumentary on this topic. Tim could benefit from learning to think critically about the substance of Maher's arguments, rather than reflexively dismissing everything he says just because the guy's a knob.

Me too... Imagine being like Tim here, thinking that going after Bill Maher for his age (born 1956) is a smart rhetorical gambit when talking to Larry Charles (also born 1956). Bill has been hosting a political debate show for his entire professional career, so it's hilarious to watch these guys talk about him being in a "bubble"... PURE PROJECTION

He's still funny, just more politically-minded than he was back in the day, at least publicly. Doesn't surprise me that this seems to have coincided with a greater focus on his music. The indie rock world is full of passionate, politically active folks on the left side of the spectrum. Maher is a smug bore, but I don't really get the degree of Tim's disdain for him. There are far better targets out there.

@@alexgrantham4747it's probably because people think of Bill Maher as the archetype of liberalism, while he's out here spouting conservative talking points and thus making fascism palatable by moving the Overton window ever further rightwards. It's kinda simple and logical to sht on Bill Maher

Because laughing at smug contrarians will never not be funny. Also, to certain age group Bill Maher used to be considered "somewhat" edgy. That age group has grown up and now we're laughing *at* him versus *with* him.

Bill Maher is the comedian who was cool and edgy when I was in high school and college in the 90's and early 2000's. Now he's the old comedian who's still making the same jokes, but they've lost their bite. He's a product of himself and the environment that he's helped cultivate for the past 30+ years. I don't know if this is something that happens to a lot of comedians...they get up into their 60's and 70's and their schtick doesn't seem as funny anymore. I've heard that George Carlin, one of the best comedians of all time, was yelling belligerently at his audience toward the end of his performing days.
