Having the right equipment is necessary for Live Action Role Playing (LARP), so here we will find out what is allowed and what is not.

I'm totally on board with that homemade spear not being thrust safe, but the thing about the shield size seems a bit strange. If you want a dueling con you can prohibit all shields and polearms and let the people fence, but a shield size limit seems far fetched, especially if it's an absolute number and not dependent on body size. Also that helmet is ludicrous, but for fantasy LARP ludicrous is fun.

Give me a shield that size under Sword Craft rules and I would be invincible. It does mean short people have an advantage with a shield. But as a tall person I have a advantage with reach. So it often balances out.

SwordCraft is mainly a battle game rather then a LARP. So shield sizes are strictly limited, even at the big events. But other LARP events are different.

Me and my mates used to go to the hardware store and buy huge 6 foot dowling or pvc that had a radius of about an inch and we cut them down to the size we wanted, then put 1/4 pipe insulating foam over top of them, duct taped the shite out of them and then created cross guards and we went to town, we had alot of really epic fights and battles. turned out fine, these rules in the video seem a bit overkill. When i look back on those fights i think, yeah getting hit by one of those things hurt, alot, but you learned how to get the hell out of the way the next time. we only ever had one broken bone and that was a nose from an accidental headshot, that was the worst injury any of us took, and there were close to 40 of us from the high school, mostly all rowers. Really just alot of bruises, a few cuts, and some wounded pride when you took an ass whooping. Still some of my favorite memories were those fights then getting drunk with everyone at the end of the day. Oh yeah, and no armor or padding or anything, the rules were simple, take 1 solid hit to an arm, cant use that arm until the fight was over or if you were "killed" if you took 1 solid hit the a leg, you lost the leg and had to hop. Solid hit from neck to hips were a kill. And no head shots. There was no role playing it was all about the fighting.

G'day, Hmmmn, the Medievalists I've hung around were using real steel Swords, but the Edges had to be no sharper than the edge of a 20-cent Coin, with Steel Armour or Leather over Kevlar, and they all tried not to hurt each other ; but there was nothing like "Foam Weapons" involved, their ideal was to be as real as possible without making people bleed (too much or for too long) but Bruises were totally expected as part of the Game. ;-p Ciao !

Here in scandinavia we have Hirds (viking warrior group-ish), we use real steel weapons, made to be safe with blunt edges and spears having flat tips, most dont have more armor than some type of protective glove (like with 5mm wax-boiled leather or hockey gloves xD) to protect the hands, and then most use sheilds. Its quite safe, bruises is something you have to expect, but other than that its quite safe as long as you can control the swings. And ofc we got rules on where you can hit and so on. :P

Sword Craft gets a huge amount of new people each week. Steel is fine if you know what you are doing. But for our crowd its just asking for hospitalizations. If it makes you feel any better you can still get bruised from a foam weapon.

BoredMormon Games Well tbh, my comment was towards Mr WarblesOnALot's comment, I have nothing against Larping and I think its great that it exists, I where even part of something similar when I was younger, we were a group of children of different ages that had these events where we were in the woods doing a Live Action Role Play thing, but with wooden weapons, thats where this started of for me. Have a nice day! :D

Adam G'day, Yeah, I knew you were talking to me..., that's why I upthumbed your comment. I'd never heard of LARPing till seeing Shad's Videos. I wouldn't say I'm "Against LARPing" either, in that I wouldn't start, nor sign, a Petition to try to stop LARPing, but when I asked a couple of questions on another thread it certainly drew a bit of a "FizzbangPop !" reaction...; it felt similar to the reaction one gets in a Food Venue when asking what's on the Menu for Vegetarians, and suddenly all the Meat-Eaters on the premises feel so threatened that they begin demanding the Vegetarian explain themselves, and provide a moral defence of Veganism because they've heard that Hitler was a Vegetarian..., and he was an Arsehole...(!). I like to discombobulate them, by mentioning that Hitler was also a Non-Smoker who hated Tobacco ; and asking if that means that Non-Smokers are a bunch of Genocidal Nazi Megalomaniacs...(?) ! It's a funny thing ; but it's not possible, at Law, to ask a defamatory Question... So, it might be fun to ask the married LARPers the classic, "So, when did you stop beating your Wife...?", when the couple returns from a day of Play-Fighting in public places...; tee hee, chuckle chortle, giggle guffaw...! (lol) Take it easy, ;-p Ciao !

I joined a LARP group (though, tbh, more like a battle game than larp), and a dude cracked another guy's ribs with a padded spear. Some of the more dense foam swords can pack a punch too: I've had black bruises across a third of my thigh for over a month from just one fight night (though, tbf, I had no armour or padding on. Just my jeans).

Depends on where in the world you live. If you live in Europe, I can recommend Deinlarpshop.de and Mytholon.com. The former has a wide variety of products for almost all one's LARP needs, while the latter got some pretty cheap but alright metal armor and clothes for LARP use. Both sites have a large selection of foamed weapons available, the most durable of which are of the brand Calimacil, which can take a beating that'd ruin two or three of most the competitors' products, except for Hammerkunst, but those are of hard foam and stiff cores, thus are banned in most the LARP sites in Denmark for being too harmful in the wrong hands. (That calimacil is banned by the more squirmy sites, is generally a matter of wrongly labeling all 'cast foam' weapons as dangerous.) If you live in North America, I only know of Calimacil's own site for a place to get good quality weapons, but I would not use their own site in Europe, due to the ridiculous import taxes applied even to the already expensive shipping. Other than those sites, I can not really say, for I have only been reliant on those and some Danish sites that offer no English language option. Mind that I'm unaware what is really meant with Full Contact LARP. What experience I have, is where people are not allowed physical contact with opponents in combat, only striking with the foamed weapons and no bashing with shields. But I assume that the equipment is only little if any different for either type of contact.

Balance is important for participation and variety. Sword Craft encourages participants with a wide variety of abilities. Put in an accurate combat simulation, and we would loose half the players. Loose half the players, and the game just wouldn't be as fun. In an effort to appeal to a wide variety of players, Sword Craft allows a huge variety of time periods and settings. We have barbarians, Romans, elves, Landsknecht, pirates, knights, Samurai, orcs, dragon warriors, Italian renaissance, gun corps, fire elementals, shades and a whole bunch of other groups. Going for realism would force everyone onto the same time period. Or severely disadvantage those who choose a lower tech group. Again we loose half the players, and the game looses much of its appeal.

Hey friend, it really depends on the chapter you are interested in joining. Some have very specific weapon length/weights that must be adhered to. My local chapter basically states that no weapon can be more than twice the length of the wielder. Also, not trying to nag, but what you are looking for might be a great sword, or a zweihander/bastard sword. There's lots of great tutorials online, ESPECIALLY Pinterest.
