Crystal this was awesome and I totally agree. Coming forward as she did was definitely a step in the right direction. When people who are suffering from mental illness are able to come out and shed light on what’s happening, it lifts the burden of social stigma. For the African American community in particular, this is critical. Traditionally mental illness has always been a tough subject but when color is involved, we cannot ignore the facts. She was the only black character and the only one excluded from the reunion. I feel this speaks volumes about the people she previously worked with and it’s a damn shame. I hope Lark continues to benefit from the support of her family and therapy.

She was diagnosed with Schizoaffective THOUGHT disorder. Symptoms of thought disorder include derailment, pressured speech, poverty of speech, tangentiality, and thought blocking. It wasn't revealed to us what level of mood disorder she deals with. Her specific disorder does not imply at all that she suffers from violent moods swings. The prominent feature of her diagnosis could very well be the disruption of thought accompanied by some degree in change of mood (it could be mild for all we know). She does not simply have schizoaffective disorder. There is a distinction. She and her psychiatrist will know her particular symptoms. We should not assume...

She's not on a verge of a break down. That's the nature of this disease. I work in a psychiatric hospital. Believe me, she is doing great. Some individuals with schizoaffective disorder can't do what she did on the show. It's a combination of schizophrenic and bipolar symptoms (usually called schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type). She may be hearing voices which is called auditory hallucinations. This often causes paranoia too. She also may have disorganized thinking as well as delusions. Not always present. It comes and goes. So again, she is doing well. Her mannerism is not out of the ordinary if you were more familiar with this disease. This is a debilitating mental illness. She definitely acts like one of my patients, but one who is stable. Trust me, you don't want to be around her if she is unstable. I wouldn't be surprised if she has been hospitalized many times.

The fact that they don't invite her to be a part of social gatherings says a lot about them and their own concepts towards those with illnesses. Whether it's mental illness, chronic illnesses or disabilities those who battle with either of them are shunned and abandoned by those who once claimed to be friends and it isn't right. True friends don't do that and are there to support each other and help in any way possible. I've seen this in my own life and after becoming disabled seen who were true friends and who was fake. I hope Lark can find people who can become her new social circle and have that support.
