Hey guys. This is an odd spelling for sure. It’s pronounced like ‘starry’ like a starry night - Larr-i. She died several years ago now from cancer, gone much too soon. ♥️ If you’ve ever seen Castaway with Tom Hanks, Lari’s the artist in Texas at the beginning and at the end who makes the angels. She’s the one who sent the package with the angel inscribed on the box that he held onto the whole time and then returned it to her and left it on the porch at the end. She’s the one who stops in the old truck and gives him directions at the crossroads. Saw her perform live once and she is amazing. All kinds of metaphors in that!

This song was released in 1994. It hit Number 1 on the Gavin Report and was a consensus Top 5 hit. Lari did have one Gold Album "Wishes" but all of her albums should have easily hit Platinum if not Multi-Platinum. She was drop dead gorgeous with a voice that literally nobody could match. She was also a brilliant musician and song writer. I was terribly in love with her. Radio never gave her much of a push or she could have been huge. She never got her just do in life and I'm desperate for a whole new generation to discover and take her to their hearts.

Oh no, My comment disappeared. The first time I heard Lari my husband was in the room and we both were really impressed. The next day when we got home from work, he gifted me the CD. A few days later I went out and bought The same CD because my gift ended up in his car permanently.😊 I always enjoy reactions from the two of you. It's like hanging out with friends.

Speaking of Pat Benatar, did y'all know there's a CMT Crossroads episode with Martina McBride and Pat Benatar? A one-hour concert with the two of them dueting each other's songs. Pat on Independence Day, Martina on We Belong with just Neil on acoustic guitar. Those harmonies! It is something truly special.

This is such a pleasant surprise! I love this song! Lari White has always been sadly more underrated when it comes to 90s country stars, though she did have a pretty good amount of success in the mid 90s. I believe this is actually her biggest hit, which peaked at #5 in 1994 (it should've been a number one, imo). I completely agree with you both on her vocals and this song is probably one of her best ones that showcases them. I get chills every time she sings each chorus, and I also love her lower, smooth tone on the verses. My other personal favorite Lari White song is the follow up hit, "That's How You Know (When You're In Love)" featuring Hal Ketchum on backup vocals. And though it may not be as well known, I also recommend listening to the title track from this album called "Wishes," which is simply gorgeous, and features another lovely vocal from Lari. As for why she wasn't as big as others, I'm guessing it's simply the case of too much competition, especially in the 90s. For whatever reason, she just couldn't make it to the next level of commercial success along with the likes of Reba, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, Pam Tillis, Lorrie Morgan, Mary Chapin Carpenter, etc. It also probably didn't help matters that both Shania and LeAnn Rimes exploded around the same time Lari's career was taking off, which may have caused her to be overlooked. She did make a comeback in 1998 with the fun upbeat tune, "Stepping Stone," which is another one of my favorites.

She won the singing contest 'You can be a star' on Nashville network in 1988. where she got a contract with Capital Records Nashville but her career did not take off. She signed with RCA in 1993 & released some hits, including this one. She also did some acting, including some TV & being in 'Cast away' in 2000 with Tom Hanks. Sadly, died from Cancer at age 52.

Incidentally, not only did Lari win the "You Can Be A Star" competition in 1988, she beat out future Country Music Superstar Trishia Yearwood in the Semi-Finals along the way. Lari was hurt by poor record label support, the idiotic flap over the video to "Wild At Heart" which should have never happened, as well as a general lack of Music Videos. I grew to resent other artists like Jo Dee Messina for example, who I didn't think was anywhere near in Lari's league getting such a huge push from Radio. Lari never got that. I used to refer to her as the queen of light rotation. She was never really a favorite of Radio Programmers which I never understood. Country Radio was such a bunch of political nonsense. If it weren't, then Kelly Willis would have been a Mega-Star because she was still is phenomenal.

Lari White was my favorite female Country artist period. I thought she was the most beautiful woman and had the best voice of any gal in all of Country Music in the 90's. Even over Shania Twain. Voice-wise it's really no contest. Lari had so much range and power. I was a fan of Shania, still am, but Lari White owned my heart. In all honesty, Lari was well on the way to becoming one of the biggest names in the industry, when her video which had been the CMT Pick Hit "Wild At Heart" which was set in a Asylum was attacked for being insensitive to Mental Health patients. Just freakin' ridiculous. Basically, some unreasonable radical people just looking to nit-pickingly find fault with anything they could find to bitch about. Lari had the song which was just starting to get more radio adds removed and the video taken out of rotation on CMT and TNN. It would have been a solid hit for her on her brilliant 3rd Album "Don't Fence Me In" released in 1996 which was packed with potentially huge hit songs. Virtually the same thing happened to poor Holly Dunn back in 1991. "Maybe I mean Yes" debuted higher on the charts then any song that Holly had ever had. It had been the CMT Pick Hit Video. Holly was attacked from some Nutcases that the song was encouraging "Date Rape", Just like Lari a few years later, Holly stopped performing the song live, Had it pulled from radio playlists and the video taken off of CMT and TNN. You would have thought that this would have only earned her respect. At about the same time Garth Brooks was receiving a boatload of complaints that his song "The Thunder Rolls" celebrated domestic violence. But Garth didn't pull the song or the video and to this day it's among his signature songs. I went straight to Number 1. Holly on the other hand was basically Blacklisted by Country Radio after the controversy over the song. Why or how this happened I will never understand. Her next album "Getting It Dunn" in 1992 should have been by far the biggest of her career to that point but was snubbed by Country Radio and just as Holly was starting her first headliner tour too. After the album was ignored by Radio Holly was dropped by Warner Brothers records out of the Blue This was totally unexpected as she was one of their biggest Stars. At the time I was really bitterly angry as I knew how good that album was. You guessed it. Within weeks of the "Wild At Heart" uproar in 1996 instead of releasing another song, Lari White was inexplicably dropped by RCA records. This in spite of 4 straight Top 15 hits, 3 out of the 4 Top 10. The first single to "Don't Fence Me In" "Ready Willing and Able" peaked at number 13 on Radio and Records, only got to 20 on Billboard in the US, but it reached number 14 on BB in Canada. All this without a music video. Why they wouldn't want to show off this Gorgeous gal is beyond me? I'm convinced that she would have at least made Top 10 if not Top 5 if there had been a music video to push the song. I was really pissed off when RCA let her go letting her brilliant new album that had Multi-Platinum written all over it go to waste. "Ghost Of a Chance, Something Blue, and Woman of the World" could have all been career songs. Her next album on the Lyric Street label "Stepping Stone" in 1998 was even better. One of the best CD's I have ever heard. Again, Lyric Street like RCA was too cheap to produce a Video for the first single the title track "Stepping Stone" the song was still a big hit, but conked out just shy of the Top 10. With a video and better promotion that could have been at least a Top 5 hit if not a Number 1 song. Sorry for rambling. but it would like Great Music "Don't Fence Me In" and "Stepping Stone" CD's are a must. Same with Holly's "Getting It Dunn" both could have been and should have been huge sellers.

Lari was well on the way to becoming one of the top Female Country Artists of the 90's when the Video to "Wild At Heart" which had been the CMT Pick Hit came under fire for being demeaning to the mentally impaired. After she had the song and video pulled, inexplicably she was dropped by RCA in just a few weeks from the label. This was a shock as they let her brilliant new album "Don't Fence Me In" go to waste. It was loaded with huge hit songs. Prior to that I really feel she was about neck and neck in popularity with Martina McBride who was on the same label. Getting released by RCA really stalled her momentum. After that it took her two years to get a new recording contract with Lyric Street. In the meantime, she co-wrote and recorded the awesome duet with Travis Tritt called "Helping Me Get Over You", several Gospel tunes, another great duet with a guy named Esera Tuaolo called "Another Broken Heart". Lari is so jaw-droppingly beautiful in that video you will have to check your eye sockets afterward. You really should review that song as it is not that well known and the video should have millions of views. It only has around 30 Thousand. The video to "Helping Me Get Over You" has over 11 million. Lari's first single for Lyric Street i 1998 was the title track to the album "Stepping Stone" and it was one of her biggest hit songs. Sadly, there is no music video for that single.

Lari would have been much bigger if RCA hadn't unfairly dropped her from the label after the absurd controversy over the video to "Wild At Heart" from her excellent "Don't Fence Me In" album that she spent two years producing released in 1996. I will never forgive these jerks for firing her. That was devastating to her career. So many big hit songs on that CD that never saw the light of day. "Ghost of A Chance" which she co-wrote would have been a signature. I honestly though that the CD was very comparable in quality to Shania Twain's Mega CD "The Woman In Me" released the previous year. It took her over a year to get a new recording contract. After Lari signed with Lyric Street I expected her to be treated allot better. Really didn't happen. She put out a brilliant album Stepping Stone" in 1998 I compared that album to Shania Twain's "Come On Over" CD from 1997, and as far as I'm concerned it was every bit as good if not better. I still think that "You Can't Go Home Again (Flies on the Butter") could have been a career song. "This is Love", That's What You Do", "On a Night Like This" and "You Can't Take that From Me" the last of these that they flirted with the idea of releasing as a single, but never did, also could have been huge. Then there was the Duet with Toby Keith (her husband Chuck Cannon's best friend) "Only God Could Stop Me Loving You". Talk about a duet of the year, if not song of the year. None of these awesome songs ever saw the light of day as singles. One of her singles wasn't played "John Wayne Walking Away" you guessed it, because it had the name John Wayne in the title. An American Legend sure, but being attacked by the premature "Woke" crowd as a Bigot. Not kidding here. That is what I was told. Such Hypocrisy, as I wonder if they would have played it for Faith Hill? Because she wanted that song badly, so did several other big-name artists. Just an example of some of the nonsensical reasons given for not an adding an artist song to a station's playlist that I routinely heard back in the 90's.

I think the reason she's not held up as much others is because there was a lot of timeless talent coming out of Nashville at the time. She's from the same Era as Reba, Patty Loveless, Suzy Bogus, The Judds. By the time the early 2000s rolled around Nashville only seemed to be interested in blonde teenagers. Unfortunately some artists get unfairly overlooked and Unfortunately Lari White is one one of them 😕

@@fenity I thought that "Don't Fence Me In" Lari's 3rd Album in 1996 was every bit as good as Shania Twain's Blockbuster album of the year before "The Woman In Me". There were so many potentially huge songs on there. "Ghost Of A Chance" I felt would have been a possible song of the year. "Woman of The World" could have been big. I loved "Something Blue". Alas, after the absurd controversy over the "Wild At Heart" video, she got released by RCA and no other singles were released. What the hell? If they had just used a different concept for that video. "Wild of Heart" would have been a solid hit. I just wished the song were about a minute longer. Then when the "Stepping Stone" Album was released through Lyric Street in 1998 I expected them to treat Lari better. They really didn't. To say nothing of her awesome duet with Toby Keith "Only God Could Stop Me Loving You". That could have been a song of the year, if one of those others I mentioned wasn't. Certainly, would have been the Duet of the year. This album was extremely poorly marketed. Even the title track which was a consensus Top 15 song could have and should have been a bigger hit and likely would have been in Lyric Street had actually produced a Music Video. The Cheapskates! It likely would have at least cracked the Top 10 if not the Top 5. Same with Ready Willing and Able" being the first single from "Don't Fence Me In" it was clearly hurt by the lack of a Music Video. What a Voice! Like you said, the technical talent blew me away! I tend to enjoy the lower Alto type female voices and man, she was top notch! There were a few times, on some of the lower notes in particular, that she kinda reminded me of Karen Carpenter. For me that is HIGH Praise. In my opinion, Karen Carpenter is one of the Greatest, if not The Greatest, Female Vocalists of all time. So for Lari to even remotely remind me of Karen is high praise.

@@BourbonCountryReacts I only really heard it on a few of her low notes, but there was a fullness in her voice that reminded me of Karen. I need to look through more of her catalog to see if she leans into that part of her range.

@@BourbonCountryReacts also, thinking about Karen, I recently found a bluegrass group that is very good, and they did a cover of "Top Of The World" by the Carpenters. When I saw the title I was very sceptical because covering a Karen Carpenter song is not an easy task and very few can even do what I would consider a passable job. This young lady did a great job! Having a bluegrass band gave the song a different feel and that definitely helped, but overall I was very pleasantly surprised and really liked the cover! I'll see if YT will allow me to post the link, sometimes they do and sometimes they don't!

I hadn’t heard of her before but just looked up and this song went to number five on the country charts and was her biggest hit. She never quite seemed to get any major success and bounced around a few labels before moving into acting.

Lari White won 3 Grammy's and was nominated for several others. I wouldn't say that not pretty good success. Including as a producer of a Toby Keith album. Plus she had a gold album in "Wishes" and "Now I Know" was Number 1 on the Gavin Report charts. She was virtually neck and neck in popularity with Martina McBride when the controversy over the "Wild At Heart" video torpedoed everything and she lost her record deal with RCA. This should never have happened. "Ready Willing and Able" was another pretty big hit of Lari's that has been kinf of forgotten. Probably because it had no music video. It was actually a bigger hit in Canada then in the United States. Released in late 1995, from her ill-fated up-coming album that should have been huge "Don't Fence Me In" which came out in the late Spring/early Summer of 1996. When Lari was suddenly dropped by RCA that brilliant album went to waste.

She was in her heh day when traditional country was back on the upswing in the mid 80s: George Strait, Alan Jackson, Dwight Yoakom and the like. She was too poppy for that era.

"Lead Me Not" was always a favorite of Lari's live shows and in some ways is really her signature song. "Ghost of a Chance" is an amazing song she co-wrote. "You Can't Go Home Again" I still believe could have been a song of the year if Lyric Street had been smart enough to have released it. I honestly can't express how much I loved this gal. "Stepping Stone" is a great song and the entire "Stepping Stone" CD released in 1998 is phenomenal. It was good enough to have generated Multi-platinum sales easily. Unfortunately, the marketing and promotion was virtually non-existent. Relatively, sew people discovered how awesome this album was.
