I'm lucky enough to have a copy of this album and met Ms. Riley and she autographed it for me, she was very nice and within the 1990s she looked like she had not aged a day. The picture on the album was taken in the 60s! As for Tom T. Hall writing the song he wrote almost all the songs on the album and most of the songs were about characters mentioned in this song characters in Harper Valley!

I love this song. The peopling judging when they shouldn't reminds me of a church I attended until I was about 19. The place was packed with people pointing fingers when they had all sorts of issues in their lives that needed addressing. I think this song is so popular because we've all wanted to unleash some truths about others when they are judging us.

This absolutely could have happened, I wouldn't doubt it at all. My mom was the only divorced parent of my 4th grade year and believe me, people do judge! We lived about 12 miles from my grandparents and Mom had an 8 track with this song on it. You learned real quick when the channels would change. Singing along, you would pause, hear the click and then keep on singing. Loved the video, it really brought back some fun memories from my child hood riding with my mom and listening to country music on 8 tracks.

There was a TV show on for awhile called Harper Valley PTA based on this song. That may be where you heard it before. Also, I have a story about this song. When I was young, we would go camping at a place that hosted country singers for concerts. I got to see a lot of artists there, and Jeannie was one of them. I walked up to the stage, she bent down to talk to me, and I asked her to sing this song. This would have been in the mid 70's. Her reply back to me was, "I'm sorry, darlin' but I don't perform that song any more." She thanked me for being there, then continued with her show.

The second semester of my Sr year I needed half an electoral credit to graduate and I had work release, so I didn't go to school much. One day the principal called my mom and told her, " if I don't coming to school, he's going to expell me. My mom told him, "he going into the Marine Corps a week after he graduates, you mess that up, I will personally come up there and kick your ass. Drinking for this song is perfect! At that time the dress the singer is wearing would be considered a mini dress, maybe a little shorter a mini dress. In Catholic school they send the girls home. Girls kneeled on the floor and skirts couldn’t shorter be than whatever the height limit was. Happened to my sister and my Mom went to school with her mini skirt and told the nuns she would not make her child wear a longer skirt than hers!

That Monday i was called to the office where the Jerk tried to get me expelled for missing an detention that the teacher that had it that week said that he locked the door by mistake which he did in fact do. New locks were installed a few weeks before and everyone was still getting used to them. I was willing to make up the detention the next Saturday but the jerk called me a liar, the teacher and my mother and still tried to get me expelled. I called my mother this was pre-cell phone and had to fight to be able to do that. My mother came storming in the next day after my best friend's mom had words with him. My mom was told not to shut the door but she did anyway. The secretaries which this can't be proven but there was a lot of movement when mom got up may have been listening with a glass bottle by the door. My mom was known for being someone who if you made her mad or messed with me for no reason to be someone that you do not want to mess with. My mom could be yelling through the door; You do not ever call her or me a liar, She took him down. When My mom walked out of the office the swung the door open to hard that she left a small dent in the wall where the door handle was as well as the entire door had to be replace do to what she did, The Principal had issues with me do to i Would not bow down to him being a bully

My mother told me that it pretty much said that I was laughing because a wasp had landed in this girl's hair during class. Yes, I did, but we were all laughing...we were just kids. My mom went to the school the next day and talked to the teacher in the hall and she never bothered me again. My mom never told me what she said. Back in the day, a lot of kids got sent home with notes.

He said a pretty girl like you better get used to the attention. Mom took me into town to go ice skating, get our nails done & have a fancy (for me) lunch - Virginia Pina coladas and real tablecloths. My Dad said to go pick out something nice & get used to following your gut when it comes to men. He said the good ones will understand if you can talk it out later. The bad ones - some girls will never get another chance to say anything because they were afraid of not being nice.

When I was in 4th grade I was always in trouble for daydreaming/talking and not paying attention. My teacher would take me into an empty room and yell at me until I was crying. This was brought up to my dad at the parent teacher conference that I was not paying attention in class. Then he asked the teacher if I turned in all my work. She agreed that I did. Then he mentioned to her that I had straight As. And she nodded. Then he said, “Then what the hell is the problem!” LMAO! I love and miss my dad so much. BTW, I was daydreaming because I was bored. I now have a Masters Degree in Engineering and run a tech company I founded.

Girls in my elementary school were not allowed to wear pants until the 70's...and I live in California...not in the South. By the time I was about 8 or 9...we could wear pants. I don't think shorts were ever allowed though. Most kids in those days also went to Sunday School...not Adult Church. Pews were for our parents during Church service...while we went to Sunday school. Very different times. Absolutely...this story happened often in the 60's and 70's.

My Mom had this 45. It was still considered a bit naughty in the 80's. Anyone who's grown up in a small town can easily identify with it. My Grandma was on a party line in rural Ohio till the late 90's and secrets they spread from listening in on other people conversations were endless.

Yep I'm almost 55 and remember when this song was so mega popular. So, I'm in kindergarten like 1973...I had figured out that Santa clause wasn't real because I saw my uncle stumbling around in the dark putting presents under the tree at my cousin's house. So when we return to school I'm telling the other kids about my discovery which went over really well. And I'm in rural mountain country in Arkansas to boot. My teacher has my mom come in for a little... Conference to complain about me telling the other kids that Santa was a farce. Now I'm so proud because I cracked this case on my own. So my mother proceeded to ask my teacher"So.... Is Santa Clause real?" Crickets..... Then a semi-pissed off ,"well, um, no." Then my mother says, "Let me get this straight. You expect me to reprimand, silence or punish my son for telling the truth? Let me ask you, what do you do when your kids lie to you? Exactly! So, I'm not going to do a damn thing but tell him 'good job' for figuring it out on his own." Now, normally my folks would've just says, ok, cool but maybe keep that to yourself. But it's the fact that my teacher had the audacity to have my mom come all the way in town to the school in order to berate me or my parents for raising me to think on my own. And way to go mom! We had a similar episode at Easter... Yup. We lived in Arkansas. Everybody had rabbits and chickens.... The math was simple...lol That's what this song always reminds me of. And my mom used to wear miniskirts back then.
