‎ While in Peru, we visited the largest fish exporter in South America, Stingray Aquarium Exporters. Not only did they have huge man-made ponds with thousands of corydoras and tetras, but they also carried rare finds like the pink dolphin knifefish (Orthosternarchus tamandua).

I understand how wild caught can be good because it’s better than destroying habitat for other industries. This does seem like a ton of fish but probably just a drop in the bucket compared to the vastness of the waterways. Would be interesting to see some estimated stats on the subject. If they didn't collect the fish then they would die from the water drying up in the dry season. So its doesnt really effect the population in any way. All the survivors are in larger bodys of water waiting till the rainy season to breed again.

This is why you should research the topic. How many have don’t research into what happens to the amazon water ways during the dry season? How many fish die? What happens if we don’t buy wild caught and those people lose their jobs? We have been down this road before, habitat destruction is what happens. People have to make money to live. Don’t buy fish? Great now they are cutting down the forest to raise palm oil for ikea. Oh you won’t buy from ikea either? Great all the fish are killed by the gold mining. So far the best solution is to support sustainable collection of native fish until an alternative is found.

@Aquarium Co-Op Cory, this is not a justification for how to harvest fish. What if the harvested fish were from the group that would have survived to reproduce? You and I have no idea how this will affect fish populations in the future, especially with more and more demand from the industry. The fish could have been harvested from the lot that wouldn't survive. But then again, they could have been harvested from the lot that restores the future population. Say what you want, but to some degree harvesting aquarium fish from the wild does affect future populations. We just don't know to what degree. Besides, some fish die during the harvesting, some waiting to be sold by the wholesalers, some during transit, some while trying to acclimate at the future fish retailers, and many in the hands of the inexperienced buyers when they get to their new homes!

  • @zenithmaiden2109

This is the unfortunate truth of just about any animal you see sold commercially. Be it snakes, birds, insects, fish...despite the efforts to meet demand through commercial outlets (breeders, farms, fisheries) it's almost impossible to do so without the use of wild-caught outlets such as these. This also demonstrates the importance of hobbyists to the hobby itself, as we have the opportunity to reduce the demand for wildcaught specimens by breeding on a hobbyist level to our communities. In an indirect way, we contribute to the conservation of the very species we keep.

We almost can breed every singel fish in the freshwater hobby , so why do we still need to take so many from the wild ? What is the reason for keeping wild caught fish as a hobby and Not for conservation or education ?

  • @AquariumCoop

Well 1 reason would be, if you stop buying wild caught, those fish will be extinct from over farming the jungle to an alternative industry. The people who collect these fish don't just go away, they need to make money to support their families. Look into project piaba. But there are other factors as well.

Seeing stuff like this just makes me sad. I can't really explain why. I think it's because it's a wake up to how much pets/animals are processed/corralled by people. It makes me second-guess "owning" pets. Am I really helping them? Is my enjoyment of them worth all of that stress they experience? Can I really say I enjoy them...or is it the control that I'm craving...? Is it really worth it? These are just some of the things large-scale selling/breeding/capturing makes me ask of myself.

I hope to god that they are breeding most of those fish ! Taking that many fish from their natural environment could have terrible ramifications over time. Then there all of that styrofoam and plastic bags it’s an environmental nightmare. Agreed with someone else here it’s videos like these that make me question my hobby of choice. It would be nice if Cory could obtain more information about this facility that he might share with the viewers. Lots of questions here for sure.

I can share my knowledge, as I have many times on this subject in videos on the channel. My question is what are people doing to educate themselves? There is already tons of information out there as to why we need to be buying sustainably collected wild fish.

Bakers_Dozen oh, I’m sorry. Did my comment bother you? I apologize, I was simply laying out some education to someone who I’m sure doesn’t want to lose any viewers due to such a simple thing. But that’s for Cory to decide, but I appreciate your constructive comment.

Patrick Wilson No, I was legitimately curious. But I find it amusing how condescending your response is, and how condescending your original comment is to Cory. He grew this channel into what it is from nothing. I think he and his viewers know what’s up. But I’m sure your concern is appreciated.

Bakers_Dozen the designation of 1st, 2nd and 3rd world countries are actually political in nature. 1st world is western bloc aligned while 2nd world is eastern bloc aligned and 3rd world is unaligned/neutral. So it’s a bit of a hold over from the Cold War.

Many people are concerned about the wild cought fish. Sure when you overfish them its a problem, but on the other hand it makes a clean river with a working ecosysthem more valuble for the local population. Its less likely that a company gets permit to pump their waste into a river when there is another big company that makes money off a clean river.

@Aquarium Co-Op Cory, I believe that his research is just as good as your research. How is it sustainable? Do you have any proof that it's not endangering the fish or the trade? You don't have any proof to say for a certainty one way or another. You, of course, are biased being in the hobbyists trade and earning a living at it. I love keeping aquarium fish myself, but please reconsider the asinine reasoning you laid out.
