While in Peru, we visited a major exporter that had tons of fish that we didn't catch in the wild, including chameleon whiptails, leaf fish, and a giant mystery catfish covered in spines. Watch the whole video to find out which fish we decided to take home.

Some cool fish. And the reality of what wild-caught fish go through
I can’t wait to see Dean breeding electric eels.
It seems a lot of people are confused about the "poor conditions" these fish are in, probably from the mulm and brown water. But if they'd watched the other Peru videos, they'd see the water was solid brown, so at least you can see into the water here, and it looks like the tanks are very well oxygenated, and they likely have some heavy-duty water changes. Fish live in dirt and waste and algae in the wild. If the fish are sick and dying, they won't make money. It seems they also use a brown medicine. So easy for people to jump to conclusions and judge. My only issue is the tank size for the giant fish. That looks depressing when they can't move.

Yes ur right dirty water isent an sign of unhealthy but the water level for all the tanks is horriable 8inch an way larger fish in tanks tht cant even really turn around fish layin sideways cause water to shallow u can see defects on angel fish from it
@MadCheshireHat

@@fishnfriends4104 which is why I said the only issue I have it that the large fish can't seem to turn around and such. I don't like seeing that. The low water levels isn't an issue for the majority of the fish, but for some of them, it looked terrible. However, Cory and other people in the comments said it's to get the fish used to low pressure and oxygen while shipping, so that makes sense. I don't like it, but if there's a reason for it, then... 🤷🏻♀️ Another thing to keep in mind is that these aren't their forever homes. They're their before they get shipped. So it *should* be temporary. I hope.

What about the fish with no oxygenated water in long plastic tubs and all the dead fish in tanks
@MadCheshireHat
4 жыл бұрын
@@danielurie4556 I don't recall seeing dead fish, but maybe I missed it. Not all fish need highly oxygenated water, either. They're not going to have air stones or filters while shipping, so maybe that has something to do with it. I don't know.

I think the key word you used here is "keeping." This exporter isn't keeping fish in these conditions, they are storing fish like this. It does them no good for fish to stagnate in these conditions, or pass away from them. Even from the most cynical standpoint I think the exporter and the hobbyist have common desire to see the fish stay healthy and spend as little time as possible in high density conditions.
@davidallen8862

Some of the tanks had awful water quality and most had water levels and stocking densities that made handling easy but provided a very poor environment for the fish. Would you buy from a shop that kept fish in these conditions?

im still wondering as to why the tanks were so low here, I asked in my own comment why they are so low and wouldnt they be healthier if they had more water? well i got a reply from Aquarium co-op saying "How would they be more safe?" not sure if they didnt understand the question otherwise not sure why they would imply having little to no water is somehow just as "safe" as keeping a fish in a proper volume of water.......no hate... just dont get the clarification from co-op on this one
Discuss look sad tho

Keep in mind they probably don't stay in the tank for very long. My guess is 2-3 days at most.
When somebody says you shouldn't put a common pleco in a small or even a medium size tank that's because they grow up into these massive prehistoric looking monsters like the ones Cory and Dean see a few examples of in this video. Very impressive looking. I think my favorite of the whole tour was that one prehistoric "megalodon" looking catfish. or whatever it was.
Wow, what a tour! I love how every inch of space was used. That’s a lot of fish I’ve never even seen before

Wow!!! That was amazing!!! Those plecos are HUGE!!! Leaf fish were cool!!! As always thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Wow! So many species and variants I’ve never seen before!
Absolutely loved all the Hatchets!
Insane! Just a completely different world. Fish that would cost hundreds of dollars here just plucked out of the river and held in nondescript facilities. Speaks to how hardy fish can really be, I guess. And also what they endure from the wholesaler/collector to the importer and dealer, to the store and finally to our homes! Thanks for bringing us along!
Awesome plecos

I definitely think the chameleon catfish were the coolest species in the video...that said, I had no idea electric eels got that huge!! Crazy!! Please do more videos like this in the future!

I think it's to get them used to low pressure water, the bags won't be filled all the way too when they are getting shipped. That way the fish can already adjust to the low pressure and don't have that stress in the bag.

Just an exporter, the fish aren’t there very long at all
crazy, ooks like a place to keep the fish for a short period...
I've been seeing those giant chameleon whiptails showing up in stores either singly or in duos over the past 6 months (there appear to be at least 3 species, or possibly color morphs, an orange brown, a dark brown, and that brown centerline with tan sides). They seem really interesting--I hope they get in more people's hands so the hobby can get a better sense of their care needs.
You quickly scanned past the angel fish... Scalare and Altums.... While there did you happen to see any Leopoldi angels ? We see plenty of the other two.. Leopoldi seem to be as rare as hens teeth. David
I have never seen those Chameleon cats before but you say they are popular right now. Either way those would be my: If I could bring something home fish. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for showing this. Loved seeing fish I have never heard of or seen as large as there as well as drool over some I have been trying to find locally! I would love to have the different Ottos, and so far none of the LFS can find anything but the basic ones. I too want some high fin cories.
Maybe the water levels in the tanks are so low so they don't jump out? They don't have lids :P
@AquariumCoop

That is one reason. Anyone who has ever moved fish 2ft plus know if you don’t have the water low enough they just beat themselves up in a container trying to get out. In low water they don’t struggle and are safe.
I hope you still going to be a down to earth guy even though you going to be making more and more money. We all like you for you mannn.
Amazing fish those orange leaf fish are cute, and that spiky pleco was gorgeous!!!! And I am here in my tiny city where I can’t even get sparkly gouramis 💔💔💔💔😩
I just put up a video of plecos that size in the San Antonio river! I wish they didn't have crews that rounded them up at night and "remove" them from the river. In one shot you can see a big pleco will still eat algae off the walls. Anyways, thanks for taking us along. Always love your videos.
Dean needs to have a fish room as big as that exporters Haha

theyre not in any bad conditions,the water looks clean for the most part, you obviously dont know much about arapaimas or how exporters work work in general its not a fucking fish store.... a lot of people like you seem to think that these tanks are their forever homes...arapaima can live in oxygen depleted stagnant creeks, they have the ability to breathe air..they also have the propensity to launch themselves like a fucking missile and can cause great harm to anyone unlucky enough to be in the way.

Wow this place is a dream! Those leaf fish were so cool, I agree, red ones are neat. Also those crazy iridescent tetras. Although most of the fish looked healthy; do you think that a place like that could implement things from China or some ‘western’ things like auto-water change, aeration, filtration, meds and food? Because I feel like a lot of people are scared of wild stuff because of a more finicky reputation, maybe this could help with a smoother transitional an aquarium. 🤔🤔
