I have a few Otari Mx5050 series machines that I wish I could find a technician locally that would put this level of care an consideration and time into vintage hardware. Thanks for the informative videos. I love the panel meters on that deck. They look amazing.

free hand lapping has uneven pressure points on abrasions. Better to use a jig

Better to have a new head. At this age, we are doing as good as we can. Lapping on a flat surface gives good results. I don't need an ideal.

@@hifirulezzz For Revox A77 I will take several angles picture of pristine head, and use as a reference on the magnifier. The curvature is important to compare

That are diamond sheets with different grip size. I am ordered all way from 15 micron to 0.1 micron. Available on Amazon.

You consider that a successful lapping on Akai GX heads? The after photo on your microscope shows massive pitting and rough edges in the GX surface.

Yep, the point is have to smooth surface so tape can get close to the gap and make gap clean without crumbled edges. the head surface does not play much.

@@hifirulezzz yes... and the tape will do the rest. I followed your instruction for the head of a Sony TC-K790 (Head model 74211A). Result is very satisfactory (tape head is less hard than yours)! Thank you!!

It would be better to find a replacement. Rotating heads are too small.
