Lanshan 2 Pro + Zpacks Duplex HIGH WIND TEST - Lightweight tent camping

Sept 2020
A high wild camp at Sty Head Tarn in the English Lake District with very high winds, pitched together with a Zpacks Duplex. This was an interesting comparison. Both tents performed well but there was a breakage on the Lanshan......

    Great wee spot for a pitch! I actually realized I had broken a hook myself, but I immediately replaced it with a small carabiner I had handy, When I got home I replaced the other side with a similar carabiner and same on the L1... much easier to slip on too! Great comparison on windy conditions. I go to Iceland in two weeks and still don't know what tent to choose. We chat with you Justin on Sebastian's channel about Lanshan 2 Pro. But I want to ask more questions for you without trashing Seb's comments section if you don't mind. I watched Scott Cameron Wanstall channel, where the guy took Lanshan 2 non-pro version (but still the same type tent) on the peaks of Scottland mountains and it tore apart. It looks like the pro version has 20D though, instead of 15D like Scott's tent. So I have few questions: 1. Do you use a groundsheet? If so, what type? I have my first SilNylon tent and the ground material "feels" so fragile to me. 2. Do you know any EU or UK sellers to change that ram-shaped buckle? 3. If you watched Scot's video about that tear, do you think it tore just accidentally? I kinda feel that he had a scratch first on the tent. Sad, that rip-stop did not stop the tearing though. 4. What do you think about the hooks inside the tent near the pole inserts (where some people make the socks or t-shirts hanger). If I would fasten those with the guyline, then it would perhaps prevent both poles to stretch the material and prevent the possibility of tear in the middle? 5. Would you use the tent in Iceland, would you prefer a rather sturdier tent for such a trip?

  • @JustinWhiting9

    @JustinWhiting9

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Edvardas, I will try to answer your questions..... 1 - I don't use a groundsheet but I never had a problem. You can buy Lanshan groundsheet separately. Hard rocky or gravel surfaces (like Iceland) or sharp spiky wood or plants could be a problem though. Groundsheet adds weight so I carry a small repair patch and some gorilla tape on my walking poles. 2 - My metal ram-hooks came from Zpacks in USA. Sorry, I don't know an UK/EU supplier. 3 - I never saw that video, although flysheet material between L2 and L2pro is different, so I can't say. 4 - I use the internal hooks for a drying line. Yes, you could tie a guy line between if you want. 5 - The biggest factor is location of camp site. If you can find shelter it will help. If no shelter possible, then it is a risk. I think Iceland is very exposed looking at Seb's video. Hope that helps!

    By the way, in the area of the tent ridge(where the stick rests on the awning), there are additional attachment points outside(of course) the awning for additional braces, in case of strong wind. The mount should be made in two directions diagonally, if you do not know which side the wind will be from, but the area is subject to frequent and strong winds, and fasten from the wind side, if you know what winds are blowing in this area. There are 2 mounting places: on the side of each entrance, there are 4 slings in total and 4 additional stakes, respectively.The loop (in the form of a ribbon) is red-white-red on my tent.

It pulled 2 of those those medium sized rocks off the pegs and the fly sheet was slapping me around the face! I don’t blame the tent though. I don't think that door guying clip/hook is much kop either - as a Lanshan 1 Pro user (same door arrangement but only the one door) this is even more of a potential weak point, because there is less support on the door side of the tent than the back side. I've overcome this by attaching an extra guy (using a toggle) into that apex exterior hanging loop (you have two on your Lanshan 2) which pegs down in front of the door guys, and takes much of the load from them - at 10g (per guy) this adds a lot of stability to the tent.

    Arg bro that was sweet looks pretty good pitched low like that! How would you rate the tent against the duplex? And how would you rate the duplex after seeing used close up? How fast was the wind bro? I had a good wind experience 65-70 mph in storm Ellen down in the Jurassic coast I had a vango cairngorm 300 was checking wheather reports as my son slept next to me was up to 50mph then after that was like a plane jet going off next to me lol smashed my tent! Calmed down after a couple of hours down to about 40mph did a little tinkering to keep us safe and dry I reckon with a few extra guys and carbon poles would of survived. recorded wind speed was over 73mph lol it’s always when I got the nipper with me! Ps the tent never leaked one bit ! Amazing!

  • @JustinWhiting9

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sounds like a wild night with your lad! 👍 Your tent did very well. I really can't comment on the Duplex not having used one, but it's weight is attractive. The L2pro is light at 1050g but the Duplex is amazing at about 600g. The Duplex fabric is fantastic, however, it costs about 5 times more, so the L2pro is pretty good value for money. I don't know what the wind speed was in my video, but in my technical opinion, it was blow-your-socks-off strong! 😂 The springs were going up and down on my walking poles holding the tent up. It was mental. I put rocks on all tent pegs but 2 pegs came out in the night and the flysheet gave me a good slapping round the face. Had to get out, re-peg, add extra rocks. That shot in the video in the morning of the tent straining was mild compared to in the night. Anyway, the tent performed well and the 2 pegs and broken door hook were my fault really. I'm chuffed with it. 👍 Justin.

    Fancy hooks replace with mini carabiner ?? Ultra-ultra-light seem to just use dyneema rope with knots.

    Small soft shackle would work with the dyneema.

    Which seriously shows why side panel pull-outs should be separate from the skirt pegging point, and as far away as is reasonable, with their own cord. And pegs only pull out if not angled correctly ie. fairly acute to the ground, never nearly upright. It's geometry. Yet I see this so often, even with 'experienced' backpackers... Again, Justin, sincere words, not criticism as such, more critique! Otherwise, I like that tent! When Lanshan started out some years ago they made REALLY cheap tents. Now they have made numerous improvements and mods etc they are creeping up in price. Which goes to show that the price of tents is all in the design, and that even expensive materials aren't what make a tent that much more expensive than real cheapies. My only thing with these cheap/er tents is - how long will they last, by which I mean, how many times would you use one in really harsh conditions, and for how many years, before you start to have concerns about their integrity...? I have a number of tents of this type, one very much like the Lanshan, silicon coat on the outside, PU inside, and after only maybe a dozen trips out I can see stress and wear points looking, well, more than a little stressed. That is where materials and design really matter. I would love to know how your tent is looking a couple of years and many wind-battered nights out in the wilds. That, for me, is why I inevitably end up carrying a little more weight in order to use a tent of slightly more robust construction, using slightly more robust materials, and which I would still trust after hundreds of nights out. My favourite tent of all time was £384 in 1995!!! (around £800 for the current iteration) Used at the very least on 400 nights, probably many more in fact, and often in terrible conditions, I still trust it over 25 years later. The price penalty becomes an advantage in the end. My Aluxe Twin Peak looks pretty stressed after just a couple of years, and I wouldn't even trust another 'mid tent after just a few trips. That's the rub. Yet I LOVE these cheap Chhinese jobbies, hard to resist. In fact, it is you who is making me look into buying one now!! Cheers Justin.

    You’re right Bob, I’m a mechanical engineer so I understand the geometry. On that night, however, I was getting battered by the wind and just put the tent up quick without it blowing away. No chance for fine tuning a perfect pitch. All the pegs were in as horizontal as possible with rocks on top, and it still pulled a couple out. I’m not looking to camp in those conditions often and not for hundreds of nights. I am primarily a long distance 3-season hiker, so weight is important to me. At £100 and 1050g this spacious tent is perfect for my needs. After only about 8 wild camps it’s paid for itself in my book. 👍 Justin

    It was an unplanned video on a separate trip. The wind was so strong I filmed a few shots and only thought of a ‘high wind’ vid when I got home. Seemed to work ok for a short vid. Suppose I could have done a closing piece to camera at home but didn’t bother.
