Bad Weather Wild Camping with Budget Lightweight Hiking Tent 🌧️🍂 Lanshan 2 | Unexpected Thunderstorm

An unexpected thunderstorm meant that I had to abandon my original pitch and my plan to camp up high and exposed to test out the Lanshan 2. After making my way down into the woods, I had a bit of a struggle to get the tent up in the rain & wind, but got there in the end
The weather passed during the night, so I didn’t get to put the Lanshan through the relentless bad conditions that I was hoping to. I was happy with how it did in the weather that I encountered here, but since this video was filmed, I've been able to get it out in 2 nights of constant bad weather and unfortunately it didn’t do so well! Look out for that video coming soon! :D
Thanks so much for watching 😊 Much love, Claire 🌿🐻

I prefer a two person tent when I'm out solo. It's always nice to be able to bring all your gear inside if the weather turns really bad. The most important thing is that it can handle strong winds and heavy rain/snow.

Big rocks on top of the pegs will help keep them in when it gets really windy, and believe me it gets really wet and windy round here. You can also tie on to large logs or wrap the lines round large boulders.

@@WildBeare Apparently you do actually get a warning prior to being struck by lightning, you feel tingly and your hair starts to stand on end, at which point you are supposed to drop to your knees and place your hands on your knees, to provide a direct path to earth bypassing your heart. Just lying flat would be more effective. I doubt this procedure was created by anyone who survived a strike. Then theres the sensible option, the one you chose, get down lower. The last thing anybody wants is to lose our lovely mountain girl.

It seems like lately I've seen several KZread campers, who when confronted by thunder and lightning, drive on uphill like they are immune from wind, rain, and electricity. As someone who has experienced an extremely close lightning strike, it was wonderful to see you use your common sense and try to put distance between yourself and the storm. Please keep showing smart, safe outdoor skills that we can all learn from.

i quite enjoy a good thunderstorm but yes , once you have one zap the ground within a stone`s throw it tends to make you VERY humble indeed , once your heart rate drops below 180bpm you notice that weird smell....... it`s actually terrifying and NOT something you want to change the odds on

I love your determination to force the tent into bad weather conditions to see how it holds up. That's some pro product testing right there! The Tent makers should be queuing up to get you testing their gear! Loved the thunderstorm footage too, they sound amazing up in the hills! I was nearly at the top of Skiddaw in the lake district when I heard a storm approaching from the other side, I about turned and made a hasty retreat back down the hill. Luckily it was only a day trip so I wasn't fully loaded with camping gear but by the time I got back to Keswick, the storm had already caught me and I was drenched. The 'un-ladylike' bit in the video reminded me of when I accidently mooned an old couple at a campsite in Crawdon (Pennine Way). I say mooned....they got both sides! I was drenched and had to get the bottom part of my wet gear off. It was lashing it down, I didn't think anyone was around. I dropped the bottom part of my gear off, pirouetted into the tent, looked up and saw the two old dears looking out the front of their camper van. Anyhow, looking forward to the uncensored version of the video on OF! The weirdos will spend a fortune to see it! 😀 Keep up the great work Claire, it's November and the videos keep coming! You're amazing! Daz x

Well done for following your instincts to move to lower ground! It reminded me of a time I was wild camping in the Pyrenees. Just before sundown I watched a big thunder storm and lightening show about 10 miles from me. The weather forecast said it would keep moving south of my position. I went to sleep. One hour later I was woken up by a clap of thunder very close by. The forecast was wrong! A voice in my head said 'move your butt now!' I jumped out the pop up tent and shoved it into the back of the car. Just as I got into the drivers seat the heavens opened. I barely had time to shut the door! It hammered down. I decided to get to lower ground and drove off to the village as lighting struck around me and a literal river ran down the road. Just to mention when camping in woodlands or groups of trees. Always check there are no dead or weak looking boughs or branches above where you pitch. And never camp under mature Beech trees because they are renowned at dropping lower branches without warning, even on perfectly still days. Its the nature of how the Beech puts more energy into upper branches compared to other species. As such the lower boughs become weak and can simply just fell off.

@@anthonydoyle7370 Hi Anthony, unfortunately I got back to work and into action again but had another setback with an aggravation of the injury to my back (3rd one!). I’ve just had a cortisone epidural injection in my lower back (may need more) so hoping this will settled things down long term so I can get fit and active once more… Sorry to hear about your issues, it’s no fun when your body lets you down!

Ahh thanks, I get offered sponsorships but I don't take them as I don't feel I can give an honest opinion if I'm being paid. I do enjoy trying gear out in bad weather :D this tent got absolutely battered on the next trip bless it, haha! Thank you for watching :) 🌿🐻

That’s great to hear Claire as a viewer you don’t mind seeing gear reviews but difficult if it’s paid and you never hear a bad word said. You could maybe accept the gear to try and review on basis your review is what it is positive negative or indifferent and they don’t pay you. Maybe you could give away some of the stuff in viewer comps after you have finished with it or do something for charity with it.

@@ianhoughton3349 Thanks Ian, yes that's an idea :) I haven't even accepted any free stuff for well over a year for the same reason.. it still feels like I would have to moderate what I say about it, so I'm preferring to just buy my own gear and do my own thing currently

Best thing about horrendous weather is getting dry, cosy & in shelter. Makes you truly appreciate the simple things in life like warm, dry socks 😂 I wouldn’t be rushing out to buy this tent however. I have had my Vango Banshee 200 for 9 years now and it’s amazing in all weather in the most rugged terrain, mainly the cairngorms. HighLy recommend

@@whippetsnippet Yes agree, practicing caution is wise to mitigate and manage risks. I only cross water barefoot when it makes more sense and I can see the bottom of a shallow stream (and when I have hiking poles/stick for added stability.) For beginners or those not use to being outdoors, I definitely don't recommend being barefoot.

Magical Claire. I’ve subscribed to you for some time now and followed you through your good and bad times. May I just say the the difference in you since you have gained confidence and grown in stature. You hit a problem now, you find a way around it, in your earlier videos you could sense your insecurities at times, sometimes your indecisiveness would come through. Not anymore, you’re confident in your decisions and have started mastering your craft. WELL DONE You. You’re a true inspiration to any young female who may be going through a tough time, your videos show their is a way forward for them not to let their fears control them. Put simply, you’re an honest humble lady, whom shows that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. 👍😊

I really like how you are truly putting this tent through the weather tests. I have a new tent for winter and I'm very excited to see how it (and I) handle snowy, cold conditions. I've shied away from winter camping in the past, but I love watching winter camping videos. This will be my year to get out there and test my gear to see if it works well with the elements. I look forward to your future videos with the Lanshan 2. You really do make it look like a snap to get out and enjoy yourselves, even with challenges that nature throws your way.
