Language students call a CUSTOMER SERVICE number... and need to speak ONLY in DUTCH!

What happens when language students (including beginners) call a customer service number...
... and need to speak only in Dutch?
How long will it take before they switch to English?
How long will they manage to have a phone conversation in Dutch?
We did the challenge with our language students, with different levels of Dutch:
Level descriptions:
Level 1 group (0 to A1), ±0-50 hours of Dutch class
Level 2 group (A1 to A2), ±50-100 hours of Dutch class
Level 3 group (from A2 to A2+), ±100-150 hours of Dutch class
Level 4 group (from A2+ to B1), ±150-250 hours of Dutch class
Mistakes marked in the video:
We've chosen to mark small translation/grammar mistakes in red for educational purposes. We have deliberately chosen a very light red font, so as not to put too much stress on the mistakes, because when you learn a language, you shouldn't be afraid to make mistakes! Words that should have been in the sentence (to have a correct sentence) are marked with square brackets.
Corrections:
2:13 'mogen wij informationen wissen op de e-bikes' - mogen wij informatie over de e-bikes
2:39 'ik mag een vraag praten voor de fietsen' - mag ik een vraag stellen over de fietsen
2:54 'verstaan jou' - versta je
3:09 'wissen welke type of' - weten welk type van'
3:20 'vraagde voor' - bel voor
3:50 'een fietsen' - een fiets
4:14 'niet e-bike' - geen e-bike
4:23 'wij wil' - wij willen
4:29/4:35 'heb jullie' - hebben jullie
8:28 'hoe lang ik kan krijgen de fieten?' - wanneer kan ik de fietsen krijgen?
8:57 'Hoeveel het kost?' - Hoeveel kost het?
9:28 'Jij zegt net jij wil proefrit' - Jij zegt net dat je een proefrit wilt.
9:29 'Nu jij wil...' - Nu wil jij...
9:53 'Ciao, ciao' - Doei doei.

This reminds me of myself. An insurance salesman called me once and asked if I could speak right now and I said "Dank je wel" later in the conversation he said that he will refer to me as 'je' instead of 'u' because he is much older than me and I thought he was telling me that I should be referring to him as 'u' and I said "sorry, ik ben niet vloeiend in Nederlands" my cringiest phone conversation. I laugh about it though.

A good starting structure when talking to customer service: Customer service person - Goede [ochtend/middag/avond], u spreekt met Jan Smit van [bedrijf X], waarmee kan ik u helpen? Caller - Goede [ochtend/middag/avond], u spreekt met [voornaam en achternaam], ik heb een vraag over [het gespreksonderwerp bijvoorbeeld "uw fietsen"], ask your question after this Knowing this basic structure will help the rest of the conversation.

Props to those students but for the captions, translating “ah lekker” into “ah, yummy” is just butchering it bc everyone can see that “lekker” in this context means “nice”

  • @LearndutchOrg

    @LearndutchOrg

    4 жыл бұрын

Context: it's strange to use 'lekker' as a response to someone who says 'ik kan je verstaan'. Here 'lekker' sounds funny, but is not really correct, and because it's out of context we used the English translation 'yummy'. For the viewer who is not fluent in Dutch, it's clear then that this sounds funny and that 'lekker' can't be used in this situation. If we had put 'nice' in the translation, any Dutch learner could have thought this is a normal response.

learndutch.org it might be used more as slang then, because when someone says (for example): “keb een 9 voor voor mn wiskunde tentamen gehaald!” Then you can bet the response to under high-schoolers/students will be “oh lekker!” Now it might not share this meaning in ABN but among students, “kun je me verstaan? Ja? Okay lekker” is definitely the appropriate response. I’m native Dutch btw, and it’s just the way we use the word
