Language: Bridge Or Divide?

On April 17 this year, the President accepted the recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language, giving a significant push to the use of Hindi in public discourse. The move has yet again invoked the ire of the non-Hindi speaking population of India, with the DMK threatening a replay of the anti-Hindi protests in Tamil Nadu in the 1960s. Another facet of this language debate is the deep Hindi-English class divide. On this edition of We The People, we ask: Is Hindi spoken widely enough to be the 'national' language of India? Is the Hindi push counter-productive to the organic growth of the language? Is the knowledge of only regional languages disadvantageous?

I hope you know the fact that "Language is source point where the culture and tradition is formed" Give me one logical reason why you want Hindi in South India? The hate towards another regional language is so beneath stone age. One logical reason - For the same reason many people complain that Indian people are loosing their tradition and culture because of the western language and influence. Especially english. We'll loose our regional culture and tradition when Hindi is forced down. It is cunning way to exterminate history, great personalities of great civilisations which are much older than 2000 years from which even sanskrit rooted (I'm talking about most of the south Indian languages, not speaking for one). Explanation by example- Specifically I'm from Tamilnadu, now I'm speaking for Tamil and I ask you, Will Hindi teach us Thirukkural? 1330 couplets - which contains all the worldly virtues and ethics. If so how? May be you are gonna teach us Tamil through hindi medium? Will Hindi teach us about Avvaiyar - A traditonally respectable 2000 year old women poet who mentioned about 'Atom'.? Now Tell us what can a 500 old language give us? other than invasion of Mughals and freedom struggle. Even in freedom struggle you'll mention about Rani laxmi bai but you won't have a single detail on the Legendary V.O.C, Kittur Rani Chennamma, Pulikesi-II(There is movie on Pulikesi-23), Sepoy Mutiny at Vellore, Veerapandiya Kattabomman(Well! rings any bell? No? There is stamp out there and a movie also. Go get it). Have you ever heard of these people? but we learn about these people many times in Tamil text books provided to us by our state schools. We are not against Hindi. We're just saying that it should be optional just like English is. So the question is why do Hindi speaking people want to force it and erase our south states tradition and culture(Speaking on behalf of all south states). Will you be willing to learn English while telling you to give less importance to Hindi? If you are not okay, then why are you expecting your fellow Indian to do so? REPLY

srinivasan natarajan Gimme a break man.. Im ignoring all your historical bullshit and your naivity and lack it knowledge about other languages and regions of the country. You are clearly living in the past. 1. Itll be easier for north, west and east Indians to understand your culture if you can communicate in a language which is widely spoken in the country. (Maharashtrians, Gujaratis, Bhojpuris, Kashmiris, Punjabis, bengalis etc. understand and speak hindi). 2. Itll bring the country closer as the language is understood n spoken by a majority. 3. Hindi is an optional subject in Maharashtra, Gujarat and other states already. 4. "YOUR" culture, as you boast is about 500000 yrs old so it cant be that brittle. Using hindi as the third language for official purposes cannot harm your culture n traditions. Get a grip man.. You are making a senseless case and a stupid arguement.

Get a break man. Let me be past freak for you, I don't mind. For a fact I'm not arguing but plotting down facts. You are just being pejorative. Naivety? What Naivety? I lack knowledge? Google it out. it's all in wiki. I don't know how to describe... Just because you are ignoring the facts I put, it doesn't mean that you are making a point. It's pointless jotting facts for you so let point out the flaws from your own numbered bullets that you wrote, 1. Itll be easier for north, west and east Indians to understand your culture if you can communicate in a language which is widely spoken in the country. (Maharashtrians, Gujaratis, Bhojpuris, Kashmiris, Punjabis, bengalis etc. understand and speak hindi). - [FYI - This debate of "widely spoken language" has been sealed in 1945 when Madras presidency wanted to join Indian union, English was decided link language ]. Ain't we talking and knowing each other by speaking in english? right now you and me? and with my fellow north brothers. After all the globalization our government has bought in, lets be a nice global citizen and refine english. According to UNSECO India's literacy rate is 72% so I think I'm capable of talking to Maharashtrians, Gujaratis, Bhojpuris, Kashmiris, Punjabis, bengalis etc. in English. right? Why do I need to learn a new language that I feel difficult? 2. Itll bring the country closer as the language is understood n spoken by a majority.- Majority speak english not hindi. Hindi natives with whom I worked with themselves rarely spoke in Hindi even in their home. 3. Hindi is an optional subject in Maharashtra, Gujarat and other states already. - Yes, it was already optional in all south states, even in TN, thats why I took and learnt it. For a fact I know to read and write Hindi for the past 25 years and have roamed in the north for many times and Since you mentioned you were ignoring my previous reply I'm making the point twice, it should be only optional and always optional. Not offical. 4. "YOUR" culture, as you boast is about 500000 yrs old so it cant be that brittle. Using hindi as the third language for official purposes cannot harm your culture n traditions. - Well thanks for patronising our Tamil culture, archaeologists even found out its mother of all languages but that aside, I said its ours - meaning its yours and mine. But you mentioned ""YOUR" culture," - hurts brother because I don't get it whether you are a Anti - Tamilian or anti-Indian(Since you had no respect for the historical facts of freedom fighters saying "Historical bullshit") but I know you like only hindi(May be you got no right to claim on a language since spat on the historical facts but I don't know). Even in my previous reply which you didn't read or couldn't understand properly (due to my bad English maybe) I never felt Hindi is out of India. Coming to your "the third language for official purposes" TN literacy rate - 80%+ considering last 15 years, But even in the Urban areas the parents of this literacy rate are still illiterate and own houses and business. Two work here in my office, one from UP aged around 40+ and another is a tamil guy nearing 50s, both are illiterate and settled in TN but can read english, browse their mobile but can't read Hindi. In fact there are people who can talk better english than you and me but has never visited schools.eg-mamallapuram. I see many people are being able to adjust with English irrespective of state, language. Lets say Hindi is official, just imagine property tax bills, Electricity Bills, municipal notices, government orders on properties, railway, bus tickets, school books, forms and what not. Common people who don't know both english and hindi, the educated ones who do not know hindi, almost more than 65% people will go mad. Even the guy from UP will go mad. Government wants to keep a section of people in dark for sometime? in article 343/1 of the Constitution of India - There is no national language. I don't who made Hindi a national language. Lies feed to mass. Hope I was able to make enough sense. Ashok Vajpey an expert in the interview points out that nobody understands even the people who created it were no language experts - I don't know if its true. Just because Hindi is the power of the central. I don't want to learn such a kind of weak language.

srinivasan natarajan Yet again.. half knowledge and undercooked facts. 1. Literacy rate DOESNOT mean understanding or Speaking English. Please educate yourself more about definition of literacy in India. (i can tell you, but ill refrain from preaching FACTS to you). 2. Again wrong! Majority in India understand and speak Hindi. Care to look it up before making a fool out of yourself please? 3. Wrong again! Please read the definition of an official language. What government is planning is to introduce hindi as the third language, after English and the native language. Classic case, Bangalore metro signs which were printed in kannada, English and Hindi but for some stupid illogical reason was opposed by the locals. 4. Im sorry but your judgement skills arent as strong as your English. All Im saying is use the widely spoken language in a country (which is NOT ENGLISH). If its tamil, make it the official language to bridge the gaps between people. Im not patronizing nor condescending any language or culture. What I meant by 'historical BS' was all this history is irrelevant here in this debate. Also, by highlighting "YOUR" i dont become an anti tamilian or anti national. It was just to point out how youve been singing praises about a language and culture while undermining another. Also, in your defence you are quoting a debate of 1947? Really now! Its been 60 long years. World has changed and moved on and its high time people like you should too. Stop living in the past bro.

Well English is here to stay. There is no point riling against it. It is the language of business and higher education and Indians have benefitted immensely from it. Hindi is another regional language like Kannada, Tamil or Assamese. India is a conglomeration of many linguistic sub-nations. It is highly IMMORAL on the part of central government to patronise Hindi at the cost of other Indian languages. The 107 point recommendation to which the Prez gave his nod seeks to make Hindi in effect the national language, atleast they are moving towards it. If central govt. does not revoke this then they are laying the seed for secession in this country. Hindi was introduced to Southern India only after Independence in 1947. Southern states are teaching Hindi for the sake of national unity. We don't see a similar effort to teach southern languages & other Indian languages in Hindi speaking states which was actually a quid pro quo mandated by the Kothari commission in 1968. It is IMMORAL that the onus of national integration should be placed squarely on the shoulders of non-Hindi speakers while Hindi speakers get a free-pass throughout India. If at all, all the languages mentioned under Schedule VIII of the constitution are equally national languages of India, no special place can or should be given to Hindi. This will be vehemently opposed in the South and other parts of India. I highly commend the sensible comments made by Mr. Ashok Vajpayee. For the same reasons, non-Hindi speaking Indians should also oppose efforts to make Hindi an official language at the United Nations.

Half knowledge and utter bullshit. This assumption that north India speaks Hindi is as stupid as the assumption that every south indian is a madrasi. There are more languages in North than there are in South India and the only reason why Hindi is being "PUSHED" is because a vast majority of Indians speak the language (irrespective of their caste, creed, region and sect). As the host of the show rightly pointed out, around 53.60% Indian populace (READ IT TILL YOU REGISTER IT IN YOUR DELUDED HEAD) speaks and understands Hindi whereas only 12% Indian populace speaks and understands English. The percentage of NATIVE HINDI SPEAKERS IN INDIA IS ONLY 14%, the rest 39% hindi speakers are multi lingual (READ IT TILL YOU REGISTER IT IN YOUR DELUDED HEAD). The idea to promote Hindi across India is only to bring the nation closer, and not to sub-standardize any language. Noone is forcing you to speak or learn Hindi, as of now the public discourse functions in 2languages (English and the native language). The law will only ADD (READ IT TILL YOU REGISTER IT IN YOUR DELUDED HEAD) Hindi as the third public discourse language after English and the native language. Stop victimizing yourself and stop opposing a language only because your grandfather asked you to.

As long as India remain one country, any other language cannot replace ‘English’ as official language. The national freedom movement relied largely upon English language in order to reach out to non-Hindi speaking areas which was 2/3 of India including Bangladesh and Pakistan before Independence. We cannot altogether stop using English as official language. British Rule has efficiently replaced Sanskrit and Urdu during their rule of more than 200 years in India. They have left India during 1947 Indian Independence but their legacy still being continued by way of Constitution of India, Parliamentary Democracy, Law and Justice, Administration, Defense and Space program, Research and other fields. Hindi is an under-developed mixer of Sanskrit,Urdu,Persian and other local dialects which cannot in anyway replace English.

West Pakistan(Now Pakistan) imposed Urdu on East Pakistan(Now Bangladesh). East Pakistan revolted against West Pakistan and Bangladesh is the result. Same thing will happen in the case of South India. A idea of separate country for South India is present since India got independence. These kind of stunts just increases the hatred and strengthens tha Anti North India attitude amongst South Indians. South India got nothing to loose, it's a developed region in every factor. The regional languages in south exist for so long and people have fought over language in South India. Just go to Tamil nadu and try to speak Tamil to a shop vendor and you can see pride in his eyes. A inherent pride that a visitor to his state is trying to learn his language. That pride made them develop than any other states in North India. Please don't mess with that pride.

It has not erased our culture and heritage, but has only allowed us to share that culture and make new friends from other cultures. Knowing English also allows Europeans to travel and do business all over the world, and I pray Indians will have the same opportunities and will be able to strengthen the presence of English in their country, so that no matter where they are and who they talk to they will be able to communicate and share their culture🙏
