Lang Lang & Thomas Chan -- Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto NO.1

Музыка

As an ambassador for Langham Hospitality Group, Lang Lang hosted the Piano Master Class event in Hong Kong on August 2011. The event was a celebration of classical piano music where talented students were inspired by Lang Lang's encouraging critique.
11 year-old Thomas Chan 陳浩彥 won the Gold Award in the National Youth Piano competition last year.

I don't know why people are criticizing his mistakes (the boy) - it is after all a "class" not an actual performance. I think he did a fantastic job and he will be a great pianist if he keeps it up. To all those who are quick to judge and criticize, what Masterpiece did YOU play at 11 years of age?

Was very reluctant to chime in, but kudos to Lang Lang for having just the right touch in every respect. He gave very kind guidance, culminating in "don't kill yourself." It was such an honest and gentle way of saying that Thomas should grown into this piece, it's a little bit beyond his grasp right now. But he was completely encouraging, and above all supportive, while telling the boy he should focus on practicing with love, not to be a keyboard gladiator, which will only backfire. Just the right "touch." Btw, beautiful playing from Lang Lang on thd orchestra part, clearly showing his years of experience (probably a hundred performances) of this piece. What I enjoyed most about it was the freshness he played it with: clearly knows the music inside out, but this was an opportunity to be "on thd other end," and he brought out the nuances as only someone with that experience could, even more than a conductor who can only convey the interpetation through other musicians. Here you had the orchestra part refined to its purests essence that an actial orchestra would dilute. So I'm rather in agreemebt with those finding this strangely nicer than a real orchestra. This also of course made it more intimate, less bombastic than a 60 piece orchestra. So much to appreciate in this, but most of all Lang lang's gentle supportiveness and genuine caring towards a very accomplished pupil who must take care that ambition (his own or perhsps his parents') doesn't become counterproductive. "Don't break your hands." "Don't kill yourself." Seems to me those are wise, and truly caring, words.

To be honest I'm never too amazed by prodigies and I'm quite sceptic when I read about them but this kid was indeed quite good. I wasn't expecting an excellent performance but the kid delivered something, he wasn't perfect made few mistakes. The interpretation wasn't always great but reasonably enough, a 11 years old doesn't have too much to give, he's literally not old enough. The point is, for his age this is amazing.

Everyone has his own favorite players. If you don't like this video, nobody is asking you to watch it. Come on, give Thomas Chan a break. After all, he is only 11 years old. For those who are casting negative comments on his playing, could you have played or have you attempted to play this difficult piece? Lang Lang admitted he did not play this piece until he was 13 years old. And for those of you who do not know this, Tchaikovsky was gay and had to keep it hidden from the public. He had a miserable and loveless marriage, and committed suicide. But what a legacy of great music he left for posterity. Gay people are born gay, and we must accept this. At least the Supreme Court has recognized them and has given them the right to marry in all 50 states.

@@firstbourne8799 its probably a little late now, but you can start by playing some easier pieces that animenz transcribed, for example aLIEz. Also it always depends on how deep you analyse the music. Just playing the notes with kind of the right volume is quite easy compared to a deep analysis of the details, rhythm, different melodies, etc.
