The problem with publicizing masterclasses on KZread when it involves developing adolescents is that it brings in too much unhealthy opinions and criticism from insensitive members of the KZread audience. To the critics here, keep in mind that unless your criticisms are with the intention of helping the growth of this young, talented pianist, you're really not contributing anything positive. You might counter with, "Hey, this is KZread and I'm not obligated to be positive." That would be completely true but also show a total lack of social responsibility. Finally, it would behoove all to keep in mind that the purpose of a masterclass is to learn; the goal is not to showcase the ability of the student, but I'm sure some teachers out there think otherwise. I don't think that you have to meet a standard of "readiness" to participate in a class; those who insist that you do, I would ask, "Relative to what benchmark?" Those who commented that he wasn't ready probably think in their minds that they can play better than him and completely missed the objective of a masterclass. Good job Matthew! If I had to play for Lang Lang as a teenager, I'd be even more rigid than you were. Hope you learned a lot from this class and were motivated to further develop as a pianist.

There's nothing as a social responsibility. When adolescents watch these videos, they should have an expectation of the various opinions associated with media from a public forum, and make their own judgments about the validities of the various opinions, be it positive or negative. Also, you should meet a certain "readiness" before attending master class. And by what benchmark is to completely play the piece fluently and without technical errors, as it is the purpose of a master class to harness your interpretation, to attend one without tackling the basics of a piece is purely a waste of time.

I wonder how many of those who uttered critics as to his play, actually play piano. As Isabella Chan already said, usually the inadequates are the harshest critics. Criticism is easy, performing or doing what is criticised much harder. Mathew Chan is not Lang Lang, he follows a mastercourse with the maestro. Everybody has to learn, even those who are perfect.

It means as a conscientious person in society, you consider the potential impact of your opinions and decide accordingly whether or not to voice them. As a youth my teacher enrolled me in piano competitions; I practiced at least several hours a day in preparation, and on two occasions I won first place at a major competition in my level. I vividly remember the second time I won; I was 13 and performed Liszt's piano version of Schumann's Widmung. I played it flawlessly during competition, but when I had to perform again at the winner's concert, nerves got the best of me and I choked epically; sweaty hands, stiff posture, missed notes, everything that could go wrong went wrong. I remember feeling a sense of shame and embarrassment when they put a gold medal on my neck afterward, like I didn't deserve the award. My point is that the kid here was clearly nervous to play for Lang Lang. He probably put in a ton of hours to prepare for the occasion but didn't perform up to par on that day. If I had to guess, it probably wasn't even his personal choice to play; others likely made that decision for him. When I blotched that performance so many years ago, for a while I wanted to quit (and eventually I did); I can't imagine how this kid feels from the weight of negative comments directed towards him here. People can have dissenting opinions, but sometimes its wiser not to voice them.

I don't understand why there are people criticizing this boy,.he's here to learn not show off nor prove how good he is..surely he didn't have a good interpretation/performance of this piece but he was learning and improving

I can only be fascinated and a bit envious of this young men. HE'S 14!!!! What were you doing at 14? I believe the 99% of people commenting here at 14 were just having fun. This guy has probably decided to dedicate all his efforts to this and I must say with a kind of success if he can play in front of an idol and getting tips from him. Mathew just listen to Lang and keep going. With the practice you'll improve. Great job!!!! I love it but of course I am not an expert. I just like music in (almost) all its forms

I hold 2 degrees in piano from the Juilliard School in NYC (1971 and 1973). I have no criticism whatsoever with any of these students. They have all worked very hard to achieve what they have. Andre is excellent and he has the strength necessary to tackle the Mephisto Waltz. I am enjoying listening to the whole masterclass. As I write this, one of my students is also listening!

@@chigster3419 Lang Lang was kinda nice to him because he was young, but he should not have played that piece at that age... And he was not prepared AT ALL to have a master class with Lang Lang

I don't understand why do so many people defended Matthew. He has to play really well to get this opportunity to take this masterclass. He came to learn from Lang Lang and perfect himself. It's very responsible of Lang Lang to teach him like this.

The reason why people like me are defending Matthew is because simply people are too harsh. You have to understand that this guy is young and ppl call his playing a “disaster” which is very disrespectful since he can play pretty good for his age, especially infront of hundreds of people and infront of Ling Ling. Yes, he may not be perfect with the dynamics and the notes, but the whole purpose of a class is to learn and a lot of people do not understand that you are supposed to learn from a class and not be perfect.

I didnt know about piano music but i think he is a very good teacher. He makes the sound alive with feelings

We have to support this boy because he's there to learn and no one better to teach him that Lang Lang, the teacher of the teachers! The Best pianist in the world, really a genius!

This is masterclass.... class, related to learn. I am not sure this is about bad or good, but about improvement. It is so lucky to be Matthew, learning from master, getting valuable inputs, and having a gut to receive critics. I am not, honestly..... I envy Matthew, and Lang Lang of course. For me, you both are brilliant

Matthew has all the ingredients to be a marvelous pianist. He is just 14, but he feels the music like rarely a young Pianist does. Mistakes can be corrected and that’s why he is there. He fully deserves to be there. I am not sure people know the difficulties of this nocturne. And the people criticizing here: let’s see in a few years, I am sure Matthew is going to nail it! 🤞

Lang is really a dedicated and devoted teacher.

The kid is brilliant. A hundred times better than I will ever be. But there is a sizeable gap between being brilliant and being a top concert pianist. I wish him well!

What a blessing to have the opportunity to get a lesson from the master. Lang Lang clearly understands classical music at a very deep level. And it's fine for the student to take some constructive criticisms, that's what he's here for.

For me, You are already good Matthew and learns well. Maestro Lang Lang is one of the best piano teachers. Lang Lang motivates you by exercising keen sense of humor. When I studied Integrated Music Course (IMC)electone and piano to my mind, I just want to play and hear my music regardless if people don't appreciate my playing...my joke to my teacher because he kept on asking me to repeat the phrase to emphasize how to properly play or execute the piece; I felt am already exhausted(my teacher I know felt that, too, like hè was already impatient). To make him smile, told him, "Sir, here's a joke and don't get offended: You're my MENTOR and very, sorry, I am you're TORMENTOR." Hahaha...Musicians are happy people. Your student Matthew under your tutelage Sir Lang Lang will for sure become a good pianist, too...Be encouraged Matthew. God bless...

I think the beauty of Chopin and his pieces, is that a lot of the emotion and sound comes from experience; having done all my RCM grades when I was younger, I would play 'fast and furious', like Mathew here, in essence not understanding the sadness and poetic genius of Chopin's pieces. However, I believe with time and more experience, Mathew will be able to perform this wonderfully.... Kudos for playing in front of Lang Lang (as we all know he can be a bit intense)...

Ok in his defence he's young...the piece requires a ton of emotional maturity to play and interpret .....according to chopin's students he was very particular about the opening chords alone...getting them to repeat again and again until it was correct.....don't be too hard on him...I'm still struggling with this piece after 20 years....he won't be

This kid did great! But you can't beat Lang Lang's interpretation and teachings. Chopin is supposed to be emotional with long intuitive pauses and carries. Lang Lang is one of the best Chopin interpreters ever

I could tell he was really nervous, making little mistakes here and there out of his nervousness. But his interpretation in general was lacking. But he’s 14, give the kid a break and let him learn from this experience (though I don’t know why I’m talking like I’m old, I’m 15 lmao)

Damn, Matthew's teacher must be so ashamed of himself while witnessing all the imperfections Lang Lang is pointing out. This was the harshest session of them all. I don't blame Matthew really, but maybe he just wasn't ready to play for Lang Lang yet. Massive learning experience for him though.

I think he could have at least give him a compliment to start off with. He focused solely on the negative parts. For a 14 year old I’m not sure if that is good.

Be romantic is impossible to understand by little boy :P Here we can see everybody can play the piano = press keys but no everyone can move audience heart. When Lang Lang play 2-3 notes u know what emotions are in that keys and he really understand that.

Not it’s not too hard it’s just hard to master the musicality which would go for any of chopins pieces. Especially with the slower nocturnes. It’s very difficult to get that melancholy feel.

Classical (not just this piece) requires a level of emotion, finesse and expression that Mathew has not yet mastered. He was only 14 years old at the time of this video. That was 4 years ago. I'm sure he has matured musically in that time.
