Laney AOR 100 - Quick Demo
Музыка
Quick demo clip of a Laney AOR 100 I recently purchased online. The amp was damaged in shipping but still functions so I threw in a set of ARS (Shuguang) EL34B power tubes I had laying around and some JJ preamp tubes (a EH 12ax7 in the v1 position).
This demo features both the AOR100 and my Bugera 1960 Infinium both individually as well as blended together.
I'm playing a custom built Strat with Duncan JB (bridge), Classic Hot Stack (middle) and Vintage Hot Stack (neck).
My signal chain is detailed in the video.
Audio is from iPhone mic.

Thank you, that's very kind. I'm kind of in a holding pattern right now but in the next year hope to be up and running and in my new house (and studio) and will be doing a LOT of new video, including a demo of this and quite a few other amps. Can't wait!
Great representation of this legendary 80s amp.

Thanks for your kind words Rich! I plan to record and upload some more stuff here shortly so stay tuned. I like what I've heard from Bugera thus far - I'm concerned, though, at the build quality, based on the price. I've already had an issue with the Bugera 1960 - a few months ago, it lost virtually all of it's output volume. Wasn't tubes as I swapped 'em all out, one at a time, and tried running through the FX return to no avail. That said, though, Bugera's customer service was really good. I sent the amp to the service center, they were out of stock on whatever they were waiting for to diagnose the issue so the company just sent me a brand new one. Thus far the new one (which is the one in this video) has been great! I bought a Trirec in a pawn shop, which got this whole amp buying frenzy started in the first place LOL! Sounds great but not quite as good as a Mesa Dual Rec so I'll be selling it. Stay tuned and thanks again!
Finally a decent demo of this head! Just as I remember it, and great playing too bro!

You dude made it sound really sick!! I use one of those with one of my band it seriously kicks ass. I too crank the mids all the way, it really help tighten the sound. My amp is 30 years old and I never had any problem with reliability. The finish feels cheap compared to a marshall, the cabinet is made of particle board, but the guts of this amp screams 80's metal! It can also sound like a plexi if you dial it right.

Thank you. The amp sounds considerably better now - I changed the power tubes to a new set of JJ E34Ls (I read on some forums that AOR amps like these), had the amp's BIAS set to them, and had a full cap job done - all the capacitors were the originals - meaning they were WELL PAST the point of needing to be replaced. I hope to do another video soon, this time with better audio - I'd planned to do it last week but Hurricane Florence had different ideas (I live 2 blocks from the ocean in northern South Carolina) - hopefully next week if my schedule will allow.

I own two AOR's. One is 1987 AOR100 MV 9 6 knobber and the second is 1991 AOR 50 Series 2. I recapped them recently . Series 2 got a bit more gain than 6 knobber, but 6 knobber sounds so great. Especially with good OD pedals. I'm using it with Bogner Ubershall or Boss Power Stack ST-2. Power Stack got a bit more overdrive than TS-9 and much more low end. Anyway AOR is my #1 amp. #2 is Laney iRT.

killer setup...would love to get some more details on how everything is routed for switching/blending etc
@TheGuitarNerdShow
6 жыл бұрын
It's a fairly simple setup. I run from my guitar into a Sonic Research Turbo Tuner and an EP Booster from Xotic. From there I can either run directly into my Lehle P-Split II to split the signal OR run through whichever pedal effects I may want, then into the splitter. From the splitter the signal runs into whichever amps I'm using. Each amps' speaker output is routed to an amp/cab switch made by deLisle where I can switch from between 3 amp heads - the output is routed to a Suhr Reactive Load. I have a stack of 3 amp heads on each side of my mix desk. Each set of three has a switch and Suhr Reactive Load. It's set up this way so that I can have several options for combining amps. The blending is done in my DAW software (Logic Pro X) - it's just mixing two sources to taste. In this video each amp's signal is equal. You're hearing the sound from my studio monitors.
Thanks for posting this, but I also want to tell you just how bad I feel that the seller did not pack it well enough to arrive in the condition you expected. I bought an AOR 50 Watt PTL about 5-7 years ago face to face with a guy and later have found out it had some mouse eaten wires inside. Now I have to be about rewiring the chewed ones plus some coupling caps it got. Great demo sir. thanks.
@TheGuitarNerdShow
5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, thanks for your kind words! Weird about the mouse chewing - a few weeks after I made this video, I put this amp in for a retube (Biasing) and had all the capacitors changed (all told over $300 - almost what I ended up paying for the amp LOL - yeesh!). Prior to this I had taken the amp out of the head box to look at the innards to see how easy it'd be to set the bias myself (I had a Bias probe on order) and noticed a wire or two appeared to either have burnt a little, or been chewed LOL! So I was sure to point it out to the tech to whom I took the amp and asked him to repair that. I will be doing an updated and much better demo of this amp in the coming weeks. I'm working on a pretty major relaunch of this channel with much more frequent content uploads so if you haven't already, please hit the Subscribe button. Thanks! And thanks again for your kind words!

@@TheGuitarNerdShow You are welcome. That $300 sounds reasonable with parts too, I basically did the same with a Marshall JMP 50 watt I have. Sadly the tech was ok at replacing tubes, caps and fixing my power cord, but I suspect he replaced my original Marshall Power transformer without me actually needing it. As I later discovered when I still had the issue I brought the amp to him for occurred despite me hardly using it, (intermittent loss of signal issue) I decided to learn diagnosing and fixing things myself. It turned out my ohms selector had gotten loose socket and would lose electrical signal. I found this quite by accident simply trying to find ANYTHING,,,,,,, that was amiss and would restore some semblance of sound thru speaker. Whether it be crackling, or good guitar sound or what. Basically a $0 fix and I have been good ever since.

I had a 6 knob AOR and it had the same characteristic as this one did with the fizz...I modded it into a straight up 2204 and it sounded great so I threw a PTP in there and turned it into a 2204 with more tweaks. Ya know, it can sorta do the 800 thing but there's a certain aspect of the 'Bark' that a JCM800 has that I'm not able to get. Stay tuned - I've got a video coming soon of an amp that nails the JCM800 perfectly!
Are you aware that both the original 3-tube and the later 4-tube (12AX7) AOR series are made with the same British components, transformers, etc. that Marshall used? Yep, the transformers are Drake in the 50 watt, and Dagnall in the 100... the same as Marshall used in the early JCM800 amps! Even the capacitors, resistors, etc. are from the same vendors. You used to be able to buy those early AOR, or even earlier 3-tube Pro Tube heads for $150-200, because people had no idea these are literally a "down-the-road" version of a Marshall JCM800... literally. You can still pick these up pretty reasonably... certainly much less than you'd find even an old, beat-up 2203/2204 Marshall for. Regards 🎸
