Land Rover Series 3 - Driving the Legend
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Dear All,
It's been a while since we have heard from the Landy, and I have wanted to do a driving video for ages.
It was quite an experience and setting up the iPhone at the edge of the road and driving off goes against the grain, but without a camera crew, needs must!
As you can see the Landy is running well, and it was great fun to take it out on (and off) the road. I would love to drive it more.
I have a couple of jobs lined up. There is a lot of play in the steering so I need to adjust that, but need to create an access hole in the mud shield to access the steering box. Anyone done this before?
I will also probably change back to the radial tyres on Wolf rims soon, as I am concerned the cross plys will give out at the valves at some point. But I do prefer the original look that's for sure.
Speak soon guys, and as always I look forward to the comments and chat.
Regards Joël

Flipping great video! ASMR for Landies! Loads of amazing camera shots too. Particularly the gearshift in Landy patent wobblevision. Great stuff Joel!

Hi Kevin, you are very welcome. 👍
Wonderful! :) I've just bought an 88" '74 Series 3 in Marine Blue like yours after a complete ground-up restoration. The 2.25 is now running 9:1 compression and extractors. Torque is huge. Incredibly lucky, I feel privileged. Mine has the full Exmoor soft top conversion. I can't wait to start adventuring in it, and toodling around town in absolutely no hurry at all. :)

Hi, thank you.
Great weather for a drive 🙂 I just unbolt my mud shield to adjust the steering box. It is only a few screws and doesn't need doing that often. I find steering play is more usually caused by worn track rod ends - there are quite a few so any play in them adds up. Get someone to wiggle the steering wheel backwards and forwards continually while checking each one for play. Do that visually, don't put your fingers anywhere near! Graham
@My911

Thanks Graham, thanks for that. All the ends are new, so I think it’s the box. My mud shield is sealed to the inner wing.

@@My911 have a look at the steering idler. Some are a pain to get oil in, so this can be neglected over the years. A worn one will really impact on steering possibly more than a typical box (imo)
Look great Joël and looking forward to see some similar footage of the 996 !

Thanks Paul. Me too. I’m already planning the action in my head. 👍
For some reason, I was still hearing the growling upshifts and downshifts of a 917K, but when I realized it just wasn't going to happen, I just relaxed and enjoyed the ride. Cheers from snowy Alaska

Wow, a 917k is something else. I guess in it’s heart of hearts the Landy is exactly that. 😀
Seems to be going well and is sounding good . Countryside looks nice to drive through it’s rare to see mistletoe in the trees.

Wow, I didn’t see that. I will have another look. But yes, the countryside is beautiful here.
Thanks, I really enjoyed that. We were talking about our Landies at work today (we're all Rover drivers..) and couldn't come up with a specific reason why we really should like them, but all agreed that we just do, and would sooner take the Rover than our comfortable modern motors.. WRD meanwhile awaits a gearbox swap, can't wait to go for a drive again. Yours sounds in fine fettle.

Thanks Phill, your very welcome. Very cool your colleagues all drive Land Rovers. Good luck with the gearbox. All good preparation for the trip. 👍
I've not seen my little blue S3 for over year - it took a while for the garage to get the restoration so this is making me miss it! The garage are sorting out the engine (injectors, pumps etc), replacing and fabricating panels and chassis parts, then a full respray. I've had pictures of the rolling chassis and bodywork covered in fresh primer... Maybe I'll get it back for Christmas!

Hi, thanks. Worth doing the timing from scratch along with tappet spacing. Etc. Also, the winter effects the carb mixture a little. Some owners have summer and winter settings for their carb. Especially if it’s a Webber (like mine)
Wow, great cinematography! Thanks for sharing - that must have taken quite a bit of editing, nice work.

It's been a while since we have seen an overview of the entire project. Have to say you've restored it exactly as I would have, leaving the history, bumps and bruises and memories preserved, while going over the mechanicals and making the interior a nice place to be. I found your channel a few years back while looking to buy one myself, what you have is pretty much exactly what I was looking for, right down to the colour year and spec. Great to see it on the road being enjoyed.

Lovely! ......mine's going in for color change inspection and records update tomorrow. Full inspection and road-worthy inspection will follow next week, hopefully. Four new Sailun 265/75R16 mud-terrain tires went on last week.

Great video Joel, I too am missing driving mine, which Is almost identical as you may remember. Have you thought about going for defender tubeless original style rims? For me they are the best compromise for original looking with the benefit of modern tyre acceptability and not having to mess around with inner tubes. Kind regards from England.
@My911

Hi, remind me what’s with yours, off the road? The rims is a good idea but more expense. I’ll probably do it at some point though, and swap over the the Goodyear tyres from the wolf rims. Over in the UK for. Grist mad so looking forward to that. Nothing beats Christmas in England. 👍

Hi. It’s because of the parabolic springs. They are bad quality and don’t have stronger springs on the right hand side to take the extra weight of the transfer box and the fuel tank. ☹️
