I had Samurai fit a 6.2l V8 GMC diseasel to a Stonefield P3000 6x4 to replace the underpowered Ford 3.0l V6, engine, the 6.2 V8 it's self was good, but I couldn't keep the truck in gearboxes with all that extra torque. Over heating was also a problem and it really needed a much larger radiator. The P3000 weighed in at 5.25 tonnes and was shaped pretty much like a brick, with all that she still managed to reach 90mph in high range at 4500 rpm reading taken from a GPS, those engines could rev for being non turbo. Fuel consumption went from 3mpg with the Ford engine to 24mpg with the GMC and she repaid the installation costs within 6months just with the fuel saving.

Interesting, thanks for the reply. Those figures aren't too far in advance of the new Duratorq engine fitted to new Defenders since 2007, but early cars using that engine with the old drivetrain did tend to destroy their differentials as soon as they were put in low-first. With a sufficiently high-ratio gearbox, I suppose this engine would probably be ok.

What kind of power/torque does that produce? Have you had to upgrade the diffs/transmission to deal with it?

the non turbo 6.2 has 140-180bhp depending on pump settings I think and the torque is around 260lbft to 300lbft. amurai was a company that sold these engines and conversion kits but they went bankrupt due to warrenty claims; dont know if they were fuckwhitted or whether the design is flawed, many yanks love these as workhorses, slow ones, and many hate them as a lemon. I would risk it just for the noise!
