LANCIA STRATOS HF ZERO: SPACESHIP at The ICE St. Moritz 2023

During The ICE at St. Moritz, Zwitserland, I have filmed this rare Lancia Stratos HF Zero.
If we're going to talk about concept cars, the Bertone Lancia Stratos HF Zero is kind of a basic bitch, pumpkin spice latte choice. Everyone knows it and everyone loves it. I don't even care. It's amazing and I love staring at it.
The 1970s is my favorite decade for both supercar and concept car design. I like to think of it as the era of "disco spaceship wedges," these long, low, flat, sharp-looking machines. They're evocative and dangerous, unlike anything on the road today. This era produced a ton of great designs, like the Lotus Esprit, Lamborghini Countach, DeLorean DMC-12 and so many others.
And those are just the ones that made it to production! The concept wedges are even cooler. Of them, the Stratos Zero may just be my favorite.
Of course, that name would be used on Lancia's famous rally-going car a few years later, but this concept from the 1970 Turin Motor Show had little to do with that. As Autoweek tells it, the concept was a salvo in the ongoing war between Pininfarina and Bertone, conceived by the latter as an experiment to see how low they could go. (In height, not design, of course.)
The fully-functioning prototype was powered by a Lancia V4 engine pounding out a mighty 115 horsepower which sat under this crazy triangle-shaped engine cover in the middle of the car. That paltry power figure didn't matter because the Zero was all about its razor sharp looks.
The seats were almost horizontal and the long trapezoidal windscreen gave a great view of the sky. The inside sported a futuristic instrument panel encased in green glass that reminds me of the inside of a Tesla Model S, just 40 years earlier.
If you grew up in the 1980s and early 1990s, you may remember Michael Jackson transforming into a replica of this car in the film Moonwalker. Google it, children.
The Stratos Zero got a full restoration in 2000. In 2011, it was sold by RM Auctions for about $915,000, which I think is kind of a steal considering how freaking awesome it is.
These days Lancia is basically on its death bed and Nuccio Bertone's famed house has been run into the ground by his heirs. The Stratos Zero concept lives on as a rolling symbol of a better time.

It was designed by the greatest Italian designer. Marcello Gandini for Bertone. Greetings.

It has what looks like a dual over head cam with a high lift competition cam. Down draft webers Make it sound deep and it also sound like it only has a resonator and a leak in it.

Alfa Carabo is another offspring of this design war. I had a purple and black Matchbox of that model. This however is super cool. Too bad we can't have more beautiful design on our roads. I completely agree with your text above. Thanks for sharing this!

Looks gorgeous , Gandini was a genius. Such fun , still looks futuristic , still is the most eye catching. Imagine if Gandini got his hands on the cybertruck design drawing board , what would he have produced.......

Some wire loom brackets off the valve cover is needed 👍 that mother ship it sucking air like crazy at idle. Awesome ride!

It's a peculiar engine. This car has the narrow V4 from the Lancia Fulvia...we can say that this engine is an ancestor to the Veyron's W16. The actual Stratos had the same V6 of the Dino. 🙂 P.s. One head and two camshafts less btw. 😂

I love this car and was very lucky that my Dad and I got to sit in it at Earls Court Show back in the day. I hate to say that for me, the engine choice seems wrong, esp the sound. Surely, a normal Stratos V6, same as a Dino 246, would have been better ? Does anyone know what is in Andy Saunders' replica one ?

His is based on a Fiat X 19, I think I remember seeing it partly done at the back of his workshop when I took my car for an MoT!

Strange motorsound
I noticed the guy got out of the car by stepping over the body. I seem to remember the black rubber section at the front with the badge in it, could fold down flat, horizontal, to act as a step, along with the forward hinging steering column, for easier access, exit ?

Please...don't mess Bertone with Vector...I respect Vector boldness but we are talking of the prototype of a racing legend...We are talking about Lancia..we are talking about the Stratos. Just to add something to the extraordinary, the engine of this prototype is a narrow v4 wich came from the Lancia Fulvia. Basically it is the precursor of VW's VR6, hence if we have a Bugatti quad turbo w16, we have to thanks Lancia's engineering efforts from 60 years ago. 😎

That wasn't this car in the movie at all in fact there wasnt even a stratos in the movie...the car used was a Dodge M4S turbo interceptor original used as a pace car for races...although a stratos was used in the Michael jackson movie Moonwalker.
