Lance Armstrong: The Road Ahead (2015)

Спорт

In his first television interview since his doping confession in 2013, former cyclist Lance Armstrong talks exclusively to BBC Sports editor Dan Roan in Austin, Texas, about life as sport's most notorious drugs cheat, forgiveness, and his hopes for the future.

It's not that he cheated, it's how he manipulated and bullied people, and was so defiant about defending his non-drug use back in the day. That's the disappointing part, he mentions it on this interview (10:57), and he's right. It was the fighting with anybody that challenged him, the personal attacks. You can clean that up very easily.

This reminds me a bit of the Frost/Nixon interviews. There's no remorse, no (genuine) admission of guilt, he still believes he was right and that he was unfairly treated. He basically seems to be saying that everyone doped, and had everyone not doped, then the result would still be the same.

LA didn’t just dope and that was all he had to do to win. He was the hardest, fiercest trainer, always looking for a competitive edge and took his body to the limit to win. However, ANYONE who understands PED's & human physiology at even a basic level knows that PED's - even if ALL of the athletes took the same drugs & they were administered/monitored by Michele Ferrari - affect everyone differently. And what's more, when the UCI sets the maximum allowable haematocrit level (ratio of red blood cells within ones entire blood volume) at 50%, how can someone with a natural H level of 48% (Subject A) be on the SAME level as someone with a natural H level of 40% (Subject B), which thus allows 'Subject B' to take FAR more EPO than 'Subject B'?! And that's an example of only one of the many drugs - EPO, HGH, steroids, cortisone, et al. - that were used during all of the '90s & the first decade of this century.

He admits what he did wrong. What I don't get is why can't he say I'm sorry, and every time he's asked, he rather say, "we're all sorry"....?? It's like he still doesn't want to take ownership of his wrong doing one hundred percent. And yes, I agree there were others doping as well, but we're not talking about the others, we're talking about Lance Armstrong. The really sad revelation about Armstrong comes at the very end.... at 23;00 his response to Dan Roan's asking Lance if he is sorry for doping in the first place... suggesting with good reason that people are 'still' waiting to see real contrition from Lance. Lance's response to this says it all... it's really worth listening to again. Lance claims that what he and all the other riders are sorry for is they got caught and 'had to go back home and live what normal people would consider normal, productive happy lives.... albeit not receiving glory, accolades and millions of dollars. Dan Roan's final comment/quetion is excellent, as is his interview. Lance still sees himself as the victim in a very real sense... very sad.

I feel a strange sense of guilt writing this (as a lifelong Lemond NUT - replicas of all of his TDF-winning bikes & more La Vie Claire, ADR-Agrigel & Z Vêtements kit than I care/dare to count - & a big fan of his other biggest victims, from the Andreu's, to Emma O'Reilly & then Tyler & even David Walsh, although he's come out of this with the biggest spoils) but I really respect every word that Lance (man, I haven't written that name for YEARS, opting instead for PHARMstrong, LIEstrong, etc..!!) spoke within this interview & as an extremely competitive person with the traits of a sociopath & someone with NPD (narcissistic personality disorder) - according to my ex', who completed her Masters in Psychology - I could NEVER be the first person entitled to be throwing stones at his metaphorical glass house. JESUS, am I REALLY going to send this??!! It's now the end of a Lance-hating era for me, I guess!!

  • @lavielemond

HOWEVER, to those who say that all of the doped-up riders from that era were racing on the same level, that is entirely untrue, as ANYONE with even a fundamental knowledge about PED's & human physiology would attest. For example, when the maximum allowable haematocrit level (the amount of red blood cells within one's total blood volume) is set at 50% by the UCI & one guys' natural haematocrit level is 48% & another guy's natural level is 40%, then clearly the second guy - who can take far more EPO than the first guy - is FAR better off & that's fucked. The ONLY way to race one another is to use ONLY what you were born with, combined with how hard you trained with ONLY what you were born with & although that may never be a reality, it is the ONLY fair way to compete. And I agree with Lemond when he says that without PED's & blood transfusions & everything else that Ferrari was able to offer him in return for the big bucks, Armstrong would have finished the Tour in the top 30, AT BEST. He was a great one-day racer - especially upon flat terrain - but his first 4 Tours, PRIOR TO STAGE 3 CANCER, show what his true ability in Grand Tours was & even then, he was already using drugs!!

Everyone who got caught only admitted when caught not when asked so all lied. He was the only one who went from deaths door to raising £500 million from victims of cancer. I am a lance fan and always will be . The price he has paid has been huge . Lift his ban so that he can at least continue fund raising .

Most people don't think about cycling or lance armstrong on a daily basis, so when you mention him, most people immediately think cheater and that's mostly what he's known for now. People forget about the good because the bad was so overshadowing despite the fact his performances got lots of people off their asses and on a bike, he beat cancer, inspired others, it was his performance that made the Lance people mostly knew him as, and his performance was based on cheating. The general public will probably always see Armstrong in a negative light, not because they care about cycling, but because they don't really care.

I prefer to look at the good things. Without Lance, there was simply a lack of awareness in many parts of the world about cycling. Whatever your opinion, he did put cycling on the map, and with an exclamation mark. Yes he was a bully, relentless, and trashed peoples reputations & lives, but he inspired most to keep living & to stay alive. He started Livestrong after he came out of hospital, not when he won his first TDF. Finally, the majority of the cyclists who were on the tours which Lance won, all admitted to, or were later found to have been doping. Even the greatest TDF cyclist of all-time (Eddie Merkcx) got caught three-times and is allowed to keep his 5-TDF wins. Alberto Contador got caught, was stripped of a TDF title in 2009 and continues to ride in 2015. And in case you missed Chris Froome's super-human effort in the pyrenees the other day, the guy only road faster on the incline. So really, I don't think that after all this that much has changed.

It would seem and also from what USADA was saying he practically took doping to a more sophisticated level. To me, it simply meant he didn't bring himself and his team to level with the others. He took extra steps to make sure they had a huge advantage? You still think its quite an accomplishment? If you meant the way he doped, I would agree but not wining the tour 7 times.

One of the greatest Boxers to ever fight in the ring was a complete ass, a horrible person.. He admits it himself.. we watched him bite the ear off another fighter live on TV.. If you have followed his life you will see today a completely different person... I like the man Mike Tyson has become,, I would be honored to shake his hand and invite him to dinner at my house... And Mike hasn't done anywhere near the good for Society that Lance has done.. Lance screwed up.. Probably as big as anyone I have ever seen in my 63 years.. I worshiped Lance when he was in his prime.. He was a big part of me getting into biking even at my meager level.. It crushed me to find my hero lied to me and to so many others... But I understand some things today I did not at that time... His reasons for doing what he did make sense to me.. Doesn't make them right, but I totally feel for someone that was so close to the top that they made some bad choices to get to the top... Lance has paid a huge price for a huge mistake.. I am not telling anyone how to feel about this man, but after these many years and myself having a much better understanding of what went on.. And I have watched Tyler Hamilton and many other riders talk on this subject, I wish Lance the best.. I would be honored to shake his hand and invite him to dinner at my house... I am sure glad people don't hold my life's mistakes over me to this day... I also know not everyone will agree with me here and that is OK.... LAnce was a giant at one time.. I still think he is bigger than most people... Time will tell.
