I don't care what anybody says - the guy has class. He does a lot of good for our community of Greenville S.C. His team is always competitive. The Hincapie Fondo attracts thousands of riders and the proceeds go to charity. If you are lucky enough to meet him (at a hospital as my son did) he is a perfect gentleman. I am proud to live in the same town with him. -- Roy Davis

I agree, Roy. I never really lumped him in quite the same as Lance and the machinery of doping. I realize he was a part of it and he has admitted it but I'm proud to be a fan of his. I was always bummed he never won P-R, especially when he had his head tube fail at the fork crown-ugh! For all you people who dump on George as part of the problem I doubt very many of you are actual cycling fans. If you were, getting to see what a classy guy he was through everything and staying in the sport to try to fix the problem and being willing to be the "old wise gent" in his late career he truly doesn't deserve the worst of the criticism. Remember, for those of you calling him a doper of the worst kind; he was only a helper....not above carrying bottles any time asked the day after crushing himself on a climb for his leader and in case you don't remember the timeline in 2006 Landis won and later was stripped of his TdF win. Doping was still in full effect just after Lance left. Hincapie was over it and trying to undo his shame. Call me Devil's Advocate but I felt it needed to be said. Lance was a shitheel whatever he may be now. Hincapie was and is not.

I was an amateur racer in the 90s and did several training rides with George and even raced with him in local South Carolina races. George used these as 'cool down' training rides after the TDF; I remember a ride in a crit in Gaffney SC and I was in my big ring with no more gear to go faster and pedaling like a dog at 208 bpm, barely hanging onto the peloton and George and 2 other dudes lapped the field. I thought I was gonna have a heart attack and at the end dry heaved for about 15 minutes and these guys were acting like it was nothing 3 minutes after the ride was over. I ran into one of the guys who went with him on the break years later and recounted my story and he just laughed and asked what I was taking. I said I was racing clean and he said, damn! THAT is impressive! You could hang in that group and you weren't on dope? I said finishing in the last 5 is not really hanging with the group.

Most people with a passing familiarity with cycle racing see this and other aspects of Cadel's post-MTB career as slightly suspicious....

George Hincapie might have doped but he doped along with almost everyone else. The difference between George and Lance is that when confronted with doping allegations George came clean. Between 1995 and 2006 if a guy didn't dope then you don't know their name now because they never made it to the top of the sport. It was a simple fact. Dope or go home because you just won't be able to compete. Tyler Hamilton stated that in that time period it would be impossible to win the tour or be competitive without doping. The best you could do would be in the 90's placing...maybe. A lot of these guys would've preferred to race clean but just couldn't and they also couldn't just give up their dream. Lance though, he's a remorseless asshole. Not for doping but for all his evil behavior.

People wonder why a stand-up guy like George would dope but the answer is simple: he wanted to be on the winning team. It’s been that way since the dawn of pro cycling back in the 1890s. All the greats through the 20th Century used dope, including Fausto Coppi and Eddy Merckx. Lance after his cancer recovery put his iron will toward being the greatest racer ever, and this meant working with the best doping doctor, Ferrari. Lance required his team to dope, including George. When Frankie Andreu balked, he was kicked out. I have no doubt doping is still going on, not just in pro cycling but amateur too. It makes a racer far more competitive than they otherwise would be, and elite racers in any sport are the most competitive people on the planet. To win they will do whatever it takes. Thanks to his decision to dope, George is now a wealthy man. The few talented pros of his era who did not dope are forgotten. The one thing George cannot do is reclaim his honor, via a sudden realization that doping is “bad” and now running a “clean team”. Pro cycling especially in Europe is one of the dirtiest of sports, not just because of dope but also the bribes, the betrayals, the race fixing. You can’t be a virgin and work in a whorehouse. And once lost, virginity cannot be reclaimed.

This interview is about selling a book in which Mr Hincapie stands to gain financial. I DO NOT believe the sport is clean regardless of what he states. I love professional cycling but am not naive enough to think for a second that it is a clean sport. Show me specifically how testing has evolved, then I might change my mind. Does it bother anyone that Lance wasn't nailed a 1000 times by testing yet he doped during all 7 Tour victories. How many test failed to produce positive doping results for Lance with all his days in Yellow and stage victories not to mention all the other top pros who were doping with, before, and after Lance and George raced and were tested. The only way the UCI will clean the sport is to have a 100% amnesty for all riders and victories in the past. Set up a commission by the best dopers and doping teams and doctors and come up with real solutions. Just like how Governments and Companies hire hackers to beef up their internet securities, the UCI should hire the best dopers to set up a system to combat doping. Hell, Lance should have all his victories reinstated because I would bet all the other guys were doping as much. Can you say Festina cycling team 1998, which was before Lance's first Tour overall win!

He quit the heavy dope decades ago but remains a chain smoker. His lungs are so destroyed he can barely talk. And yet in his mid-70s he has avoided cancer (as far as we know) and emphysema. Frank Zito In the early days, EPO killed a lot of racers by clogging their blood, leading to heart failure. I think they’ve adjusted dosage so that is no longer a risk. Amphetamine combined with other stimulants and exhaustion has killed lots of riders in competition, the most famous being Tom Simpson. But whether amphetamine (the medical kind, not crystal meth) causes long-term health problems is open to question. It IS addictive and very hard to stop. As a survivor of metastatic cancer, Lance took huge risks when he let Ferrari give him massive amounts of testosterone and growth hormone. If his cancer was recurring somewhere in his body, those supplements would have “fed” it and caused it to spread rapidly. Recurrence is common for people whose cancer was as advanced as Lance's. My guess is he knew his odds for a long life were not good and he decided to bet the farm and become the greatest racer of all time no matter what it took. And amazingly, he seems to have pulled it off, health wise.
