Lan Del Rey - Ultraviolence (Lyrics)
He used to call me DN
That stood for Deadly Nightshade
'Cause I was filled with poison
But blessed with beauty and rage
Jim told me that, he hit me and it felt like a kiss
Jim brought me back, reminded me of when we were kids
With his ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that ultraviolence
He used to call me poison
Like I was Poison Ivy
I could have died right there
'Cause he was right beside me
Jim raised me up, he hurt me but it felt like true love
Jim taught me that, loving him was never enough
With his ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that ultraviolence
We could go back to New York
Loving you was really hard
We could go back to Woodstock
Where they don't know who we are
Heaven is on Earth
I would do anything for you, baby
Blessed is this union
Crying tears of gold like lemonade
I love you the first time, I love you the last time
Yo soy la princesa, comprende mis white lines
'Cause I'm your jazz singer and you're my cult leader
I love you forever, I love you forever
With his ultraviolence (Lay me down tonight)
Ultraviolence (In my linen and curls)
Ultraviolence (Lay me down tonight)
Ultraviolence (Riviera Girls)
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that ultraviolence

'He hurt me, but it felt like true love...' Seriously, use your brains, people! She is singing about the delusion that we can all experience when we're in love with someone. She is NOT saying that domestic violence is acceptable, at all. I swear some people just like to criticize Lana for the sake of criticizing her and causing a stir!

As an abuse survivor, I can say that I genuinely don't understand the hate this song receives. "He hit me and it felt like a kiss" is also a song by The Crystals that expresses the same message as this song--victims aren't justifying abuse, but when it's happening to them, it's so easy to romanticize it because of the love they feel for their abuser. To me, this was just a gorgeous, powerful song, not some twisted justification for abuse.

Exactly. I have been listening to this non stop since I found it even though I left my emotionally abusive and toxic relationship last year. It brings back so many memories and feelings. He never hit me; but his actions and the lies, manipulation, and ways he made me feel 'crazy' for five fucking years were very abusive. Yet, we will always have a connection deep down and a love for eachother. The only way to escape him was to cut off all contact, I tried maintaining a friendship after I left him for someone "good", and all the friendship did was complicate things or bring me drama. Now that I cut all ties my life feels easier and happier, more fulfilling, yet there are many times I miss the chaos and pain I used to have in my life. It makes no sense but it is how the human mind can be.
@abigailperrin9069

I feel contempt towards him. It's more of any empty "I don't know this person anymore ", like a lingering ghost, then any kind of missing them or any true hatred or anger. I'm not angry or filled with a burning rage but there also isn't any real love leftover. I just don't know who he is anymore and it is because I don't have the shades pulled over my eyes now to believe in the lie of who I wanted to believe this person was. And the last time I spoke with him because I needed a favor only he could help with, he was so different(and he didnt help me), so it is the idea that we have both moved on so there is no longer that compelling need to bend over backwards to do things for that person anymore (regardless of relationship or not, even the friendship caused one sidedness of one or the other trying to do favors, help the other out, because of the feeling of we were always supposed to do that.) That connection is severed and I don't think it has any way of ever repairing itself, it's just too far gone. The whole thing. A true friendship, anything. Like I said, now it is just a ghost of the past that still lingers from time to time through painful memories, and some happy ones, but they almost feel unreal, like it never happened. It's a strange feeling. It's like I miss the time he represented in my life, a lot of the memories and places (we are drug addicts. I am now in recovery after I left him and have almost a year clean. As for him, I don't think he is ever going to be truly sober.), so much stuff, the chaos and destruction that happened while together, the familiarity, all of that, I miss sometimes, but I don't miss HIM because he is not who I wanted him to be or who I knew him to be. We have both changed. It's a very melancholy feeling.

turtlestan wtf? This song is a sad song if u have any emotions and in this she never said be like me. She says I went through a toxic relationship and it was terrible and it made me feel so depressed that I later came up with such deep sad album and you ask me why I stayed in that relationship for so long? Because I was in love and love had blinded me and all his violence and mean behaviors seemed like attention to me. She’s just describing a toxic relationship.

@@aconfusedshoe6240 I believe this song is somewhat an expression of what people in difficult (abusive/toxic) relationships go through, as the victim, in this song she's deeply in love with someone, so much in love that she has accepted the fact that she cannot have his love without his ultraviolence, his abuse, though she's sad and deep down wishes that things were different yet she's come to find pleasure even in the abuse that she receives, I think that's what's going on here

I agree with Alexis Agee Lana's said that most all of her songs are about the same guy, besides This is What Makes Us Girls and Carmen and such, and Jimmy Gnecco and Lana were once in a relationship, and she has a song called Jimmy Gnecco, and he's opened for her, almost all, if not all, of Lana's songs are about personal experience or perception, so it would make sense that Jim is Jimmy Gnecco, probably shortened to Jim 'cus it's shorter and fits better with the flow of the song, possibly also to protect him in case people began accusing him as "Jimmy in Ultraviolence, who hit Lana when they were dating". She probably needed there to be possible alternatives besides Jimmy for people to consider Jim meaning, which was thoughtful of her, but it's most likely Gnecco. I wonder how he feels about this song...

From what I've gathered, this song is about abuse but not specifically sexual abuse but it still hits close to home & makes me tear up even though I have no recollection of any abuse occurring at any point in my life. But that's what I love about Lana's music. You can still relate to her songs even if you haven't experienced all that she's experienced.

Came here after the disappointment of the Grammy's. If people can't appreciate how brilliantly talented Lana is, then surely she is above and beyond any musical award. Grammy's are officially trash.
Lana needed guitars for sure, this album is gonna be epic as fuck.

Underrated AF comment!
everyone leaving nasty comments on the videos lately: lana doesn't really care much of what you guys think. i see so many insults to lana on the reg but she's been criticized her whole career because she's something that the human brain can't even comprehend. i remember seeing her in person, there were these drunk british guys (we were in boston, near fenway) calling her anal del rey and she just laughed, and went back to paying attention to her fans that actually cared. that's all she really cares about, is her REAL fans. i remember the chills i got when she first looked at me. i didn't know what to say, should i give her my shirt or take a photo? so i just simply told her how much her music means to me and how i have such beautiful, happy, and sad memories wrapped around her music and that her performance made me cry, she hugged me, and she was kinda happy that i cried and i hope i reminded her how powerful she is. she hugged me, and i thanked her for beautiful music. i was so lucky, yes i have a photo and an autograph but that conversation is the only reason i left truly happy. meeting her kind of ruined me, like i was taken through heaven just to go back to hell.. that's literally how that entire day felt. some people just won't ever understand. i love you lana del rey.

just like lana herself said, she doesn't read any negative feedback, she doesn't pay attention to it. the reason these people are so nasty is cause they're truly pissted. she made it when they wanted her to fail so dramatically. it makes me laugh. i would hate to see the karma they get in life from feeding off of others demise. now all i say is i told you so, she's amazing and you can't do anything about it. the people who connect with her such as myself will be with her for life.

"Heaven is on earth" I love how she recycles a few of her classic one liners it's like a signature
i was reading the Rolling Stones review and how they said her album wasn't that good BUT since i have always liked her songs and have bought her other two albums (Born to Die and Paradise) i decided to buy it anyways and since her album hit number 1 in sales for the first week and i heard this song ultraviolence before buying her CD and i was sold from this song alone. let me just say Rolling Stone must only like that fast hype music like everyone else. i feel in love with Ultraviolence, money power glory, florida kilos, and basically her whole album. yes it is very stripped down from her previous album but i like it, it shows her emotions LOVE Lana Del Rey

She co wrote most of the songs.. I dont get why your so upset with the review. Yes, compared to top 40 music, Her new album is a masterpiece. Do you really want to go by that bar? Its a decent album. Their are some amazing songs on the record. Why attack everyone, that disagrees with you? You put your review, of a review. Did you even catch any of the references in the review? Lana fans are split. Deal with it.
"He hurt me but it felt like true love. Jim taught me that loving him was never enough." These lyrics caught deep for those who have been in similar situations. This song should not be criticized but instead understood from a domestic violence survivors view. Such amazing lyrics, so full of emotion and really captures a wonderful message that violence DOES NOT equal love. ever.
not y'all entirely misinterpreting this lyrical masterpiece. this isn't the glorification of abuse, it's the retelling of it through the scope of a manipulated survivor. y'all r so slow goodbye

Lana (Lizzie’s) music is deeply personal to me. I am also a man but neurodivergent. Her music has felt like an only friend with me in my darkest, most dangerous times, when nobody else was and the stakes were high. To the point where I am in a relationship with her through her music, it’s special. One chameleon soul to another, thank you.
"cause I'm your Jazz singer, and you're my cult leader.. I love you forever." I mean come on, clearly best line because Lana.
My logic about Lana's music: only angels listen to her music, they do understand her life and the lyrics. Normal people will be like wtf if u let them listen to her music. I'm in love with this style

Mellow and meloncholy; honest and raw, yet gentle. Her voice is lovely, and the understated backround sets the mood very nicely. I appreciate that she is sharing her life without making the statement of "you must do what I do" - her music has the thrill and depth that I imagine would come from reading an unlocked diary. Just sad and lovely and bittersweet.

I am in love with this song...this entire album. She has this coolness, yet elegance to her voice. It's like the finest brand of wine I've ever tasted. Her music is pure artistry, and I feel a lot people don't deserve to hear her music because they don't understand the intense emotion she puts in all her pieces. A lot of people are so hung up on this techno pop stage of music that they can't even appreciate the complexity of her music. yeas girl!!!!!! :D She slays my life I knew her voice was lovely when I heard her older unreleased songs from her first album Lizzy Grant stuff. I was like wow it sounded better than her Video games album...... So now that she's merged the two styles her voice sound and song writing skills is even better now. And to think all those people were trying to drag her down in the beginning because she sucked at performing live. It was nerves though because she could clearly sing in her Lizzy Grant era. People don't understand how much effort it takes to build an artist. How much you have to grow as a person and as a performer to get to that level. She just needed to get used to the bigger audiences. But her talent was undeniable. I can't believe her first label shelved her album because they thought her music was too depressing.... back in 07. Seriously does everything have to be happy party music?? Nope!! Amy Winehouse made great emotional music but she didn't start out singing the blues. But in a way I'm glad she more time to grow and stay unknown because it just made Lana more driven and gave her time to mature before the fame. Her music is so lush.... *___* it's like starting at a beautiful sad painting.... except it's in your mind when you listen to her songs.

does anybody else think that maybe this song IS a nod to A Clockwork Orange? because "ultraviolence" essentially means rape in that novel, so I can see why the lyrics of this song is illustrating an abusive relationship...
@stvltiloqvent
10 жыл бұрын
for example in the chorus she talks about hearing sirens - which can be interpreted as police car/ambulance sirens or the mythical singing creature that is so often associated with fatal infatuation. if it's the former it would be in keeping with the idea of domestic violence because being physically abused means she needs medical help right; and if it's the second interpretation it's STILL in keeping with the abusive relationship idea because the victim often comes back to their abuser. and then she sings about violins, which i think is even more closely related to A Clockwork Orange because in the book the protagonist associates classical music with violence, and violins are a major component of classical music, so yeah. those are just my 2 cents, idk.

@nicholasbeck7872
10 жыл бұрын
PLEASE, like Gino Alaine Ferdinand Suralta said, annotate the lyrics on rapgenius, that's always where I go to look up possibly meanings and you sound really spot-on, though, Lana said there's no over-arching theme to the album, that it's more a collective mood than collective theme, but what you say seems like something she'd reference, also, I saw someone mention that Nobokov, the writer of Lolita (from which she references all the time), said something once about "violets, violins, and violence being so close together in the dictionary", and how that may have inspired part of A Clockwork Orange as well, but I'm not sure, but adding any ideas like yours to Rapgenius would help a lot of people who haven't read the book and are thirsty to understand and dig into the meanings. Thank you for posting that, really makes it even more of a puzzle, which makes it seem like she hasn't really lost any edge to her writing, and that's awesome to think :)
