Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

It's not embarrassment . He's scared out of his mind . He of all people knows how unpredictable and dangerous Salamancas are and he's not fooled by Lalo's appearance and manner . He is acting as a double agent with Gus and he's worried he will give it out by some small mistake . That's why he is super self-aware around Lalo . Lalo is literally there to figure out what and how it went all wrong for Salamancas . If he gets wind of Nacho's betrayal , Nacho would be a dead man before he could blink .

Hector was the wolf that comes dressed as a wolf. His intentions are clear as a bell since he wears his emotions on his sleeve, and he doesn't mince words. It is easy to fear someone who is so outwardly menacing since you can see him coming a mile away. However, Lalo is like Hannibal Lecter. He is charming, disciplined, compliments you, makes you think you can trust him and that "it's all good," all while cleverly manipulating you into doing exactly what he wants, or else. He is the one you don't see coming until it's too late.

A friendly fassade, but actually an icecold, calculating businessman, always in control. He runs the whole thing like a company, not like a gang. And while lalo is impulsive, gus only shows emotions when they serve a purpose. Both are ruthless, but I think that lalo actually cares about his family (e.g. hector). Gus on the other hand had no problem of using the box cutter against one of his most loyal men...

Tony Dalton masterfully created an unpredictable character by pulling positive and negative facial expressions at the same time, dousing them with sarcasm, menace and humour. For example, when sizing up other people, he often squints his eyes (with virtually no blinking) instead of showing a duchenne smile, or he'll appear hostile whilst simultaneously raising his eyebrows to look "sad" or innocent. This incongruous emotion is intentionally unsettling and very fitting for a psychopathic character. Rarely does it look so effortless on screen.

Yes, but don't forget that Gus is the most dangerous when he seems to be cornered. That's his strategy: like Russia's scorched earth, he too lets his enemy wound him first, letting them invade his territory only to suddenly deliver the fatal blow from the hinterland. This is how he dealt with the Twins, Bolsa, the Cartel, Arturo and this is how he got to Lalo too. He makes them think they have the upper hand and waits patiently for his turn and then he suddenly crushes his enemies with a single blow. No wonder that Lalo lost his gleeful smile by the last episode. Only then did he realize that his enemy is just as ruthless and marked for death as he himself.

The way they speak in "code" and act as they're just conducting normal buisness comes so natural between them in their first interaction like they are both masters of deception just in their own manners. Even nacho knows that these 2 together in thi ls scene is like a huge chemical reaction waiting to happen.

It's more like... he has two personalities. Not masks, but genuine personalities. However, unlike people with Bipolar Personality Disorder, Lalo is fully aware of both his personalities, and has full power over switching between them. He uses that gift as a tool. He only let's out the cold-blooded predator personality, at the time of attack. He never let's anyone see that person until they are already at his mercy.

The shot where both are at Gus's office is incredibly clever. Due to the light inside the room, even when infront of each other they both have parts of them hiding in the shadows, mainly their face. People often say more than what they put into words, and seeing how meticulous they both are, it's amazing how much they can play the "neutral game" in order to not express more than what they intend. Brilliant performance by Giancarlo and Tony

I love how something as simple as Lalo littering at the very end holds so much meaning. Throughout BCS in particular Gus likes to keep a clean business, clearing tables when Jimmy first meets him, cleaning up after Hector took over his restaurant and litter-picking the parking lot while Mike watches from afar. In just one passing moment Lalo shows all the disrespect he needs to. Such clever writing, props to Gould, Gilligan and the writing team!

The interesting thing about Lalo is that compared to the other villains in the BB universe, he has actually been the least hostile. Both Hector, Gus, Tuco and Eladio relied on punishment and threats to gain respect from their surroundings. Except for that one guy in the store, Lalo has not attacked anyone unless they tried to kill him, yet everyone is terrified of him. His entire demeanour is so intimidating that he can be the friendliest person to you and talk about the most random things, while STILL getting the message across that you shouldn't mess with him.

Rewatching this scene multiple times and understanding Lalo’s character in this series, I’m convinced he knows Gus was eventually planning to take out Eladio and the cartel. Almost like he put himself in Gus’s shoes and thought it out how he’d play it considering the history Gus has with the cartel and his current business capabilities and resources required. That’s probably the reason he told Gus to his face - “He’d be crazy to go up against Eladio” Basically, Indirectly telling Gus, I know what you’re up to.

I think Lalo's greatest strength, compared to the rest of his family, is a kind of keen-eyed humility. Consider Hector after he threatens Mike's granddaughter - he gets what he wants and then "forgets" about Mike (according to Nacho). Hector and Tuco both have this brashness where their ego is easily stroked and they simply assume nobody would dare go against them. They think that once you've put someone "in their place", that's it, you have nothing to fear from them. So Hector, even though he killed Gus's partner in front of him, treats Gus as almost beneath notice. Lalo seems to be the only one to frankly look at that situation, the past between them, and realise that no, what happened back then is not something Gus would ever forget or move on from. It's a very obvious conclusion but one the others are too arrogant to consider.
