Lakland 5 strings are 35" scale and have 19mm bridge spacing. These are 2 major differences that I prefer over EBMM 5ers. Laklands have a better B and E string (due to the longer scale) and the string spacing feels the same as 4 strings. I love my 4 string EBMM basses. But, Lakland smokes them when it comes to 5 strings.

I had both the 55-01 and the 55-02. They are heavy but they sound good. On the StingRay how far pickup from the bridge? Is that a 19mm bridge on the Ray?

Gary from the band Introvoys uses both MusicMan Stingray and a Lakland on his gigs yet there’s no distinction with the tones. For some odd reason, they both sound the same (May have something to do with either his pedals or just his style of playing)

There are some Stingray's with 2 pick-ups also. Plus Music Man can get real expensive. I'm talking several thousand dollars. It all depends on what level of Music Man you can afford & like the sound. Both basses you played, are cool. Thanks.

My 2012 5502 has a lot of bottom, and a pretty thick neck, I don't know maybe the 2002 models had thinner necks.

At first, I thought the StingRay looked like a Sterling Ray5 S.U.B. or a Sterling Ray 25 - both have three knobs and no pre-amp selector switch, as does the guitar in this pic. However, some Ray 35s do come with only three control knobs for treble, mids, and bass control, and no pre-amp selector. However, most Ray35s seem to have four control knobs (vol, treb, mids, bass) and sometimes comes with a pre-amp selector. The bridge definitely appears to have been added on. And I cannot find that purple colored pickguard as an available option for any Ray35 on the market, so I'm guessing he purchased it from someone with an EBMM 5. Hence, this StingRay rig is definitely custom.

I'll go MusicMan all the way. No matter how many sounds you are able to get out of the Lakland, you are using one single sound during a gig anyway. ....ok, bit more high end here, bit more meat there... This Lakelands are fine instruments, anyhow.
