When I watch his videos I drive myself crazy wanting about 30 basses

Mister long I would like to say thank you for all the videos you've made. Being raised in the Deep South in a very racist community I only played gospel and Country and heavy metal music. I never even gave my heart a chance to open up to other kinds of music in the world. Until that is I really found Jesus and he came into my life. I must say that in the two days that I have been subscribed to your Channel, I have learned more about playing bass, about being a bass player, and most importantly finding the joy in the groove, then I have learned in almost 20 years. Your good spirit, open heartedness to offer yourself up as a servant to so many people, and your funny little laugh, no offense, have really helped to put a different perspective on my heart and in my life. Thank you so much for everything you've done thank you for being the person you are. I really appreciate you

Another fine video, Johnny Lee - nice work. I think the point you're trying to make in the difference between the two can be explained with one word... 'mojo' -- That sweet 6-9 is dripping with it. I'm fortunate enough to own an original '62 Fender P that was a gift from my closest friend a few years back and you can almost see a 'glow' around it and feel the grooves it laid down in 50-plus years. So I recently learned that older Jazz basses have a different pickup location. I've always been kind of dissatisfied with my 2006 model and decided to do some research on how they might have sounded different over the years. Type in "old jazz bass vs new jazz bass" and who do I see but Johnny Long! Instant click, instant like, keep up the good work.

Man that Geddy Lee is crisp and clean, but bruh... That 69 is just smooth. The tone and grit... Noice!

Interesting that the '69 has the 70s pickup spacing...i know because the bridge pickup is in line w the tone knob unlike the 60s/modern pickup spacing👍🏻💯🔥

I love the ‘69 so much more. Both aesthetically and the tone as well. The new one just has some really annoying fret buzz, and besides the E string, the other strings sounded kinda weak.

old vintage fender specially 69 are the cheapest today .The one are expensive are 1960, and the top ones are done from 1974 til 1978 call TILT NECK with Maple neck ! thats are the top ones Some till 80 but have different carved on the case. Nice clip by the way !!

You should put the same pickups in both basses and do a comparison to hear the difference in the wood.

That 69 has the bridge pickup already moved closer to the bridge. Could it be one of the first to have this?

Mister Johnny Long is awesome! Johnny will get the sound from any cheap or high-end bass because of Frankfurt sausages like fingers, thick and mellow, not to tell about his soul. Love you basses :)

Great video! Always love watching them:-) Both basses are alder. So same wood but different weight. Fender never used hard rock maple for the bodies. Ash was used in the 70s. The early block & bound jazz basses had alder bodies. Look at the grain it’s not ash. Also the binding on the Geddy Lee is not painted but real binding. It’s just different quality from the white 70’s binding.

I am dying to ask a question, Johnny. How does someone find a gorgeous, beautiful older Jazz like your bass in this video? Seriously, how do you find them? I've checked all the local shops, and they only have new or "almost new" used. I know I could never afford a bass from the 60s, but I've heard so many incredible Fenders from the 70s and 80s, and I know I love J-basses with block inlays..... but I am at a loss about finding them. Could you please share your thoughts, good sir? Thanks! !!!!

Hey Roy, When I got mine it didn't look like this..I ran it through the HOBO DEPOT CUSTOM BASS SHOP and it begin 2 to come to life..... Also to find an amazing bass look on a site called reverb, and ebay

69 is alder body or so it should. Geddy Lee obviously should be ash. Great videos!

I think that bass is at least a 72s because of the bridge pick position, they moved it back around that year and not before, pretty sure about that

You're comparing an original 69 with a modern signature (2009+) which is a recreation of a 1972 that has also been heavily modified. If you could get your hands on one, I think it may be more valuable to compare a 69 with a stock 2016-2018 American Professional.

Lol....Between a Bass and a Wife,We Do have Two Girls!!! Over the years my Wife got to appreciate My Bass cause she knew where I was at at ALL TIMES. Plus she knew another women couldn't fit in.LOL!!!! She is Right between practice,rehearsals,and Gigs at my age just Forget it. My Bass my Love,My Wife my Love,All I need or Could Handle....

I love maple fretboards

The Geddy Lee Fender sounds like Geddy's real voice.

I wish I could love war paint, I can't even stand one tiny nick in my guitar, it bothers me to absurdity. I think I may have OCD. I built a lot of guitars from kits, and they must absolutely be perfect.

U are like me, I stop let people play me Bass at a gig,if you have yours u can plug up and EQ from your Bass. Even then I can't take it.

So the older the bass gets the better it gets?

@@nikolaiturva not necessarily just most of the time a guitar or bass is really old is had a lot of work done to it and is worn in. also they just dont make em back like they did then. everything is all mass manufactured.

There is good and there is bad. As magnets get older sometimes they lose the magnetism they once had. So decades old pickups can sometimes lose their fidelity.

Also the saddles on the 69 are not stock. My mama bought me one in 69.

Obviously, the old fender's voice is more attractive

I like more the first 1 1969 sounds more natural sound just like her by the way jaco pastuorios played fender fretless the rummers saying he never slapp on bass.

Slap in the Geddy Lee sound was more to my liking.

Both basses are made with alder wood.

Its the batch of wood.

That sunburst looks likes a re issue, the original 60s sunbursts were painted white or primed before the first layer went on so you wouldn’t see the joins/wood grain. Also the fender decal has a circled r next to the fender that shows that it’s not original 69’ as they just had the word fender and no circled r . I’d say it could be a 90s reissue, and a 70s one at that. The black logo being an indicator. The silver logo with capitalized f was used during late 66-69 I think. Still a nice bass though, very nice. But for sure not an original 69

Great observation...a d information...yet she is the real deal..neck stamp and numbers...and I know it was purchase in the early 70's and I followed it throughout high school...so once again thanks but she is REAL....BASSON

I don't know of any Fender basses made with maple solid bodies. Should be alder.

all original? sure? I have a '71 JB all original (bought in the 1971 by my father :D so I'm totally sure that is "all original"). Well, maple parts are darker. Frets are not so shiny and they are quite consumed. The body is not so shiny, quite opaque, and the control plate can't be so "perfect", shiny as hell. all original? SURE?

I think the 1969 is swamp ash, and the GL is alder.

The old one is definately alder. All Fender products- be it basses or guitars- with a sunburst or opaque finish from mid 1956 onwards had alder bodies. Only the ones finished in transparent blonde (a.k.a. "Mary Kay"- finish) retained the ash bodies. This policy would gradually start to go away, beginning some time after circa 1971, and today, all bets are off as to what type of wood is used where. Even wood species that Fender would NEVER use in the old days, can now be found in some products. Especially with all the custom shop and signature series guitars. They could be anything(!).

I have a '77 MusicMan Stingray. Sorry y'all...HE'S BETTER. (My basses are all "he's" 'cos I'm a "she".) You're right. Something happens to the wood when it's been played for years.
