Lakes are STILL RISING! Summer Tragedies | Lake Mead UPDATE July 2023

Welcome back Colorado River Watchers! In this update we’ll look at how far our reservoirs have continued to rise through the start of summer. In our "Basin Bin" segment we're going to explore some local stories including the tragic events of Father's Day weekend, a Las Vegas Wash flow test, and a sewage leak just upstream of the lake.
Don't forget to head over to ‪@crittercamera‬ and give Dan a thanks for providing the aerial footage today. Your support helps local creators network and make better content together!
If you enjoy our updates, please consider checking out the Earthworks shop on Etsy and grabbing an adventure tee, stickers, or handmade art to help us continue! 👉 mojoearthworks.etsy.com

    @@SDsailor7 Yeah I gave up on that... never found a decent reliable one. Mobile detailers seem to be the way to go but that defeats the purpose because the water isn't reclaimed after. The no-driveway washing was more of just a suggestion from the SNWA. After seeing how the city is putting up luxury high-rises and a new baseball stadium though, we'll continue to wash sparingly in the drive. Least of any of these problems...

    Everyone needs to participate. I added 360 gallons of rainwater storage. I use this water to water my trees. I have not used any public water on my trees since I believe November. It has been a great water year and I wish that I would have had more storage capacity. I am now down to 150 gallons. I am hoping that monsoons this year deliver more. Best Wishes to everyone.

    @@tk9839 The grid is not a pool of solar energy. Your argument is absurd. Fresh water is a finite cyclical resource. Any storage depletes the system by that amount. It doesn't matter if you take it from the ground or the sky, you're not conserving. What you store is no longer available until you consume it and put it back into circulation. There is no difference between scooping it out of a lake or capturing it from rainfall, except to provide you a false sense of virtue which isn't based on reality or any good deeds.

    I have seen an incident in a relatively small lake where a kid fell out of a boat and then was pulled under. He never came back up. Divers spent all day looking for him and he was never found to my knowledge. The speculation was that water flowing into the ground at the bottom of the land may have pulled him into mad where He couldn’t be found. A large man made lake is bound to have localized currents and areas where water flows into the ground.

Charleston Peak lost all it's snow finally in the last couple weeks. It is SWELTERING today. Lake Powell is doing great it's rising MUCH faster than Mead and isn't slowing much just yet. Looking at the inflow and outflow charts, it looks like around 2x the water is coming into Powell than they are releasing down to Mead. You can see that in the graphs I shared where Mead seems to be "topping out" but Powell is still climbing fast. Thanks for watching!

    Welcome aboard, now you're speaking our language!😎 There is a lot of interesting geology around the lake but there is "no collecting" and "no detecting" within the park boundaries. Catch and release only! If you have a high clearance vehicle, you can drive down Kingman Wash within the park it's a nice place to camp on the water and I find a lot of copper rocks / malachite looking material on that side. If you want to collect, there are plenty of areas just outside the park boundary away from the water. Ore Car Mine is one place inside the lake that collecting is legal. You can camp for free at "Government Wash" or "9 Mile Wash" and drive over to collect at the Ore Car Claim. Lots of common agate, selenite crystals, stromatolite fossils. You can see the route in our Anniversary Mine video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i36hudOnkrHYibg.html

    Hi from Baja! You have such a gentle touch when speaking about the conservation talks "drying up." I did laugh but it isn't really funny, eh? Always postpone the problem as long as we can. In Mexico, we don't have a problem until it is. Sigh. But the 7 states got their billion dollar hush money to be quiet for awhile. The rumbling will probably start again near the end of 2025. And yes, we are all happy with the precious liquid, if only we could treat it that way. As always your reporting is top notch! Thank you!

    I'm glad you caught that one! Completely on purpose 😎 I was a bit disheartened watching all the news drop off on the river also. We'll revisit the issues soon enough! For now we try not to be Debbie Downers and I will be glad and thankful watching our reservoirs rise with this blessing right now. I recently saw an article that actually reported on Mexico and the river. Unsurprisingly... it didn't really report anything at all, basically that Mexico hasn't had a real say in the compact for a long time. I'll have to shoot it to your email this week. Hope you are staying cool there... we aren't anymore here!

    The argument over Colorado river water and the interstate compact has been going on literally for over 100 years. I don't foresee that coming to an end in my lifetime. Fortunately, Phoenix metro relies much more on the Salt and Verde river systems, although the Colorado river DOES flow through town. (So to speak... CAP canal.) These reservoirs are all full, including Horseshoe lake which is typically drained each year to provide for flood control along the Verde river. It has indeed been a good couple of years for that system. Glad that the Colorado system is getting a lot more water this year but Lake Mead still has a LONG way to go to get to the levels it once held.

    the main reason it was lowering is because they were diverting most of the water elsewhere, and telling you its climate change lmao, only a fool would believe that! the Earth's co2 level in th eatmospere is .04%, its gone from .03% to .04% in 60 to 100 years, if the co2 level drops to .02% plant life will start dying off, so we are not in some horrible climate change, and besides the climate has never been stable, e and is always changing, always has, always will, if people were here or not! every planet in orbit around the sun is heating up, so that tells you right there it's not man, yet!

    It happens in cycles. We experience drought and after a time, panic sets in and we wait until draconian measures are required for us to just slow down the depletion of water tables, the drainage of reservoirs… Then it rains. Lordy, we’ve been saved! Now we can return to our wasteful ways without consequences… Rinse, (literally) and repeat. Unfortunately, we won’t learn until there are catastrophic consequences. That’s the way we are.

When that was discovered in the late 90's NOAA made it's Agricultural & Hydrological drought designation, understanding projections showed the 16maf would come to fruition early this century. To the smallest watershed area per acre-foot at full pool. In 2007 - 2009, most of N. Georgia was under water restrictions. I believe there were 13 new reservoirs advanced through preliminary actions. Only 2 have had construction started since then. It rained in 2010 - crisis averted - politicians had to find another key issue. It's one of the downsides of a representative republic. The only job of a politician is to get re-elected.

    In regards to conservation; years ago in the city where I live. The City asked residents to conserver water to do to aging infrastructure and costs. People responded so well with holding back water usage that council increased water costs the following tax year. They were losing money producing it. And they told us that they don't make money on water charges 🤔

  • @mojo.adventures

    @mojo.adventures

    Жыл бұрын

    Wow what a farce! Did they at least send you a nice "thank you" letter for doing the right thing and conserving before charging you more?🤣 I would say that's shocking but it sounds like the typical bureaucratic response when it comes to resource management. We have lots of that here. For instance, in Nevada we keep cutting and cutting and using less and less, even though we use the LEAST of the river basin states. The city keeps building and building, adding new residents, pro-sports stadiums, and increasing water costs. We keep getting told to use less and less. We are all conserving so that new people and businesses can come waste the water instead, and the city gets to collect all it's new tax revenue and kick the can down the road...

  • @retireorbust

    @retireorbust

    Back when I was in city work we structured the rates as production costs and distribution costs because we had a water treatment plant. We knew what we needed to run the plant and maintain the lines by and large. The more we produced the cheaper the water got. Of course that's the reality. And in fact the city can use the revenue. There is no natural incentive on the fiscal side to conserve. If you do you will pretty much get the people you serve to pay too much for too little. The first things to go are lush landscaping.
