I really love your before and after photos. I could see Skyward doing some damage to boats when it's just below the surface. If the water comes up that high.

I live near Detoit, Green Peter, and Foster Lakes in Oregon, really enjoyed this video.

An interesting and well presented video. I enjoyed the QuickScrew side story. Of course, according to The Compact, Mead still 'owes' huge amounts of water downstream to wherever, to be delivered not later than September 30th. As things stand we are 86% through the Water Year and Mead has delivered just 75% of its quota. Powell has a 75% of average inflow for this time of year and has already reached 100% of its legal requirement for release to Mead. I'm guessing the managers at Powell will now release only as much as is coming in ie ~7500 cfs. Mead is now pretty much at its peak (1062) for 2023 and will drop substantially as they try to meet the 9 maf by Sept 30th deadline.

i saw two possibly AI generated videos on this topic before stumbling on your channel. you did a extremely great job, and the human touch of your video was greatly appreciated!

I've had some real issues with those AI generated faceless "cash cow" channels. They flood KZread with re-used content and it's often littered with inconsistencies and clickbait. Real human here who thanks you for watching!

I love seeing the comeback of our lake! It would be awesome if the coming winters produce similar results and help top off my childhood playground to what we remember it once was. Thanks, great video!!

Glad you're enjoying it also! That's what I'm hoping too👍 It's going to be a race to winter before the downstream use starts taking it's toll again on the levels. We just saw Boulder Harbor had water in it again last night. We couldn't believe it!! It's been almost a year to the day. I think I'll be the first to kayak in it again even if it's waaaay too low and I'm hitting mud and sticks🤣 Thanks for checking out the update!

It's a shame nobody allocated money to remove at least some of this trash when it was easily accessible. I know there are other priorities, but cleaning up some of this is important, too.

Completely agree! A real missed opportunity and shame they didn't act on it. Especially since the feds just allocated a billion dollars in funding for the lower basin states. I'm always wondering where all this money is going because we have seen very little changes at Lake Mead over the last decade...

It would be up to the National Park Service to pursue anything official like that... they control and administer the recreation area. I think we're finding out there hasn't been much accountability for the water usage or upkeep of these reservoirs for quite a while.

Hello there and welcome to the channel from New Zealand! You are right... a pity and real missed opportunity. I think officials were just hoping the water went back up before more trash and hazards became exposed and people noticed. We would gladly take that El Nino for 2 more cycles here, though I know the extremes going on from it right now are devastating many areas. It's a bittersweet El Nino... very much needed in some areas and very much undesired in others!

Really excited to have rec'd notice of your latest update. Outstanding visualization Before/After photos & aerials. Being in the Phx area, I'm feeling hopeful about this 20-ft rise, but I'm hoping for more. Maybe another Experimental release from Powell?? Or am I being unrealistic? Thanks again, guys! Great to see you back for another update! We are very hopeful over the rise also, especially after the lake was predicted to drop even further this year. What a turn of events! In my opinion, I don't think the USBR will do another experimental high flow release. As you can see Powell has already turned the curve and is hitting a slight decline daily. From what I read most recently, the USBR's goal is to now "balance" both reservoir levels. I'm not sure if this means they want each at the same percentage or what. Last year they were sacrificing Mead to save Powell so hopefully this year BOTH will keep some of these gains and head into winter ready for more!

I think we should learn from the animals. Great video 📹.

You and I both!👍 Not even 6 months ago the prediction was the lake would drop another 20 feet throughout next year. Like you mention though, the heat has been brutal lately and things are changing rapidly down there every week!

A little history - The boat you call "Rock Bottom" near the intake tower, belonged to Harry Wham of Whamco Divers. Harry was one of those larger than life characters who was a member of an Underwater Demolition team (UD-10) in 1941; a precursor of today's Navy Seals. In 1945, after the military, Harry Settled in Vegas and taught Scuba diving as well as moonlighting in local establishments as a "Piano Man". This was in addition to his frequent trips to Baja seeking sunken treasure. I took his Scuba class in 1965. After several weeks of classroom instruction, we went to a nice little cove at Lake Mead, near the intake tower and the Marina, for our "Graduation". The ceremony consisted of diving down to approx 100' where Harry had intentionally sunk an old boat of his. When we reached the bottom, Harry was already there, and he shook our hand and handed each of us our hermetically sealed NAUI certification card. Sad to say, Harry was murdered in 1983; shot in the face by a hitman, who had been contracted by his wife.

Wow, what a story! Did you dive around the lake frequently (or still do)? I can't tell you how thankful I am you took the time to comment and fill in the history of the boat. Whenever we find a new one out of water, we always have a million questions looking for breaches in the hull or missing plugs trying to guess what happened. Sad to hear of the outcome though, especially after surviving a career in underwater demolition. Sounds like he lived quite the life though once he hit Vegas! Scuba by day, barfly by night, and vacations treasure hunting. That's a cool touch waiting at the bottom at the boat to hand off the coin too! A timely story and reply also, because just recently I became intrigued by the scuba opportunities at Lake Mead and started looking into what it takes to get training and basic certification. There is a whole hidden world of exploration at the lake I've never even tried...

The thing that amazes me is that we are now into August and the lake is still rising. I was there this last week and the water rose another foot during the 3 days we were there.

Once the debris is visible it should be removed asap by the local county or gov’t for the area. ZERO EXCUSES!!!!!!

If all these wrecks and debris are exposed, why has no one picked up all the wrecked boats and metal just lying around. Seems it was the perfect time to do some cleanup, making the lake better when it fills again.

amazing that they leave garbage in the lake that is used as a resevoir for drinking. I guess some people don't mind decaying fiberglass in their water.

So another 20 years of 700 inch record snow pack in the northern mountain range. Will maintain the lake levels somewhere near it is today. As long as there is no more growth or water usage beyond present day consumption.

Apparently the Glen Canyon Dam nearly failed during the '82-'83 El Nino. Boulders the size of Greyhound buses were spitting out of the diversion tunnels. Each time, the dam shook precariously and the operators had to change underwear.

Oh yes what a story! That 1983 spillway event is fascinating to me. I covered it a bit in our "Behind the Drought 2: Lake Powell" video if you are interested kzread.info/dash/bejne/fGVty7SmYdutdbw.html I'm not sure how much longer the spillway would have held if those flows went on a few more days.

I live in Reno, Nevada. We are not in the Colorado runoff zone. But when I look out my front window, the big mountains (Mt. Slide and Mt. Rose) that surround Lake Tahoe are still covered in snow and many of our mountain peaks are still not accessible unless you drag out your snowshoes or skis. Lake Tahoe is still at her fullest, and the only drainage river, the Truckee River is still off limits to any recreational use because the water is too cold and fast.

Wow that is very interesting info to hear! Thank you for sharing that update 👍 We saw that some of the resorts (I think it was Heavenly?) were open through Memorial Day. Any of them still going? Pretty cool to hear that there is still snow holding out in some of the higher elevations. I really hope last winter will start a chain effect that carries through this winter and the next several years. We hope to make it up north to that area soon and include it in future coverage. Absolutely beautiful country around Lake Tahoe and the Truckee...

That infamous boat should have depth lines and dates painted on it.

Ha! That is an interesting idea 😎 Never though of that. Of course I would never touch it being an artifact of the park and all. Might get hit with a federal lawsuit for defacing historical objects. I'm pretty sure that's how the NPS views the boat wrecks and trash now. Look what happened to Fab Rats for removing the sunken boat after they already had permission. These agencies are hungry now and days...

Thank you for checking out the video! I think the actual snowmelt tapered off a while back, but since it was so heavy it continued well into summer and filled reservoirs upstream like Powell and Flaming Gorge. Since then, the USBR has been allowing Mead to refill with all the spoils contained in the upstream reservoirs. They could throttle the inflows and outflows at any moment now as heat and demand set in.

Love the channel. New to your channel. I would love to see if the water is getting any closer to St. Thomas.

That would be something though. I will have to look up the actual elevation of the area though to see when the last time the water was close!

Did some research and found the elevation around St. Thomas is about 350m or 1150ft above sea level, so we'd have about 100 more feet of water gain from here before it got close👍 Did a little more research and found the last time the water was at 1150ft was not that long ago... around 2003/2004!

Would be great if people would clean up all the garbage ie boats and metal!

The water has climbed almost 22 feet from its lowest point so far. 1040 feet to 1061.86 and still climbing.

It seems to be a reversal of fortune for this boat which is determined to sink all over again

It did actually look like it was canting over and might fall down when it was out of water, so perhaps it is a reversal of fortune for the boat. It's certainly more interesting "skyward" than just laying on the lake bottom like most of them😎

Why did not some one remove the exposed junk at bottom.

Depending on how long ago this was recorded, about week ago the water line on ‘skyward’ was nearly on top of the red triangle so looks like it went down about a foot; not huge difference but noticeable. And personally I hope it doesn’t get completely submerged because although locals know it’s location, all it would take is one visiting boater to hit it hard enough to push it completely over, at cost of potentially injuring the boaters. I’m probably overthinking it but actually surprised it hasn’t happened before.

You got a good eye! I saw Sin City Outdoors just released a video a few days ago and I can tell you their footage is more recent 👍 My Skyward footage was from about 2 weeks ago, it takes me a while to hike to all the boats then go back and edit all the footage. With Lake Powell leveling off this week as you can see in the graph, there is going to be less water going to Mead and I think it will stop rising (or even recede) for this season soon. I never considered what you said about a boater hitting Skyward though! I got to imagine to the fiberglass is weak from being submerged then dried out over and over. It looks like it started canting over more also when it was out of water. I was actually a bit surprised it didn't fall over on it's own from the severe winds down there. Thanks for watching!

That video would be 100% in my wheelhouse! Sunken boat restoration garage! I've had my eye on one of these boats since it first emerged, it's sad to see it going back under. Unfortunately, it can't happen for legal reasons. NPS, NDOW, and possibly more agencies would all have to clear the recovery. The conversation is basically a non-starter in the eyes of managing authorities. especially coming from a civilian like me. I tried to arrange something last summer when Heavy D was getting a bunch of attention for pulling the houseboat out of Lake Mead. I guess they'd had enough of volunteer recoveries after that. It's not exactly easy to get official permission to remove garbage, go figure. Now a bunch of those boats are back underwater. NPS is responsible for those cleanups, but does not have the funds, staffing, or resources to do it.

If that last view of the boat you're calling "Skyward" is current, then it will definitely be under water by the end of February. Then by this time next year, it will most likely be mostly uncovered or completely uncovered again.

Definitely agree with you on that it's already under another couple feet! Just yesterday Boulder Harbor had water again we couldn't believe it. Now that Lake Powell has finally topped off from winter, Mead is going to start losing it's big inflows though. It could be back under in just another week or two if the USBR let Powell flow...

​@@jbunboxingstuff2559 Of course! We got disgusted over the years seeing such neglect and disregard for the area and our water lifeline. Treated like a public pool. I know it's Vegas and all but this is one of the best and largest recreation areas we have close to the city. As for the hazards... any larger items like boats, block anchors, and leftover marina infrastructure are responsibility of the NPS. These are considered "artifacts" by NPS rules and it is illegal for a guest to remove them, even under the guise of cleaning up the environment. They don't have the funding or resources to do it though. Catch 22. Meanwhile all the trash slowly sinks back under the water again...

So what is the level now? Anyone know? Thank you

Visitors can't remove them by park rules, and the park service doesn't have the staffing or resources to do it. That is the answer we have found!

I thought no one was allowed to film lake mead anymore?? I was there in 1976 and it is a disaster to the land and water use in that area. Why is Vegas still building when water is becoming less and less.

This new heatwave has already dried up ponds and small lakes in texas

I saw the heatwave swept across the country, once it started out west it was like dominoes. If it's any relief, it looks like monsoon season is starting here and things will slowly cool off this week. Should be headed your way!

Lack of NPS staffing, funding and resources. Then the red tape and NPS rules prevent average visitors or volunteers from removing things most everyone would consider trash. Check out what happened to Fab Rats and the "Yellow Submarine" they recovered from Powell. Even though the NPS gave them clearance, another federal agency came after them for allegedly removing barnacles from the park. It's a catch 22...

Water usage has gone up 3000% in the area. This has not been caused by drought, just too many people drinking from a limited water source.

wonder why they didn't clean up the lake area after it was all exposed. lots of trash just left.

We actually did a cleanup ourselves, there is going to be a full video on that soon! The lake is controlled by the United States Government. Government can’t move fast enough to manage a decade old piece of trash. You can not have such lofty expectations on a park service employee. They’d have put down the donuts, buy some new gloves, drive out there in their new pickup trucks, and there is no one to direct or write a ticket too so it really is a confusing matter for those college grads.

Basic Water just went bankrupt maybe phone them up ask if they are liquidating the old intake tower. It's kind of an eyesore with no straws...

LOOKS LIKE THERE NEEDS TO BE A GATHERING OF TRUE AMERICANS WHO WILL CLEAN UP THE MESS ON THE SHORELINE SINCE THE LAKE IS DOWN....ESPECIALLY THOSE INCONSIDEREATES WHO USE THE LAKE AND CONTINUE TO DUMP THERE REFUSE IN THIS AMAZING LAKE??????

Yeah they love it down there! Plenty of water, shelter, and dead fish and jackrabbits to snack on. And of course the visitors who leave their trash everywhere to pick on...

I'd like to echo some the other comments about the trash. I appreciate the efforts you make for picking up trash but I condemn your federal and state governments for not putting any effort in clearing the larger items while the lake was so low. From what you showed it would have taken little effort to winch and barge the garbage these derelict boats and debris to road access. In my country if machinery of any sort is sunk in fresh water an environmental fine is levied on a daily basis. The last fine issued on my local lake was in 2021 at $1000.00 per day. I realize that some of these boats have been there for upwards 60 years but that does not mean they are no longer polluting and endangering land and aquatic life. US of A please clean up your act.

Thank you for commenting this! 👍 I can't tell you how how frustrating it is seeing the same items month after month as the water slowly rises. I share the same views as you and have discussed doing recoveries with other off-roaders as a volunteer effort. We could not make any headway getting permission though. For the last year we could have easily drove up and winched out 3-4 of those boats. Put them on display in a "Lake Mead Graveyard". Would have been easy trailer recoveries. As of this week though, the water has flooded the harbor again and I there is no longer access to the boats. 2 are underwater and 2 are only accessible by water again. Completely lost opportunity...

I wonder why during low levels , why all that junk is not removed ? Looks to me that authorities are very irresponsible and estranged from keeping up the land. Boats, metal trash and all human garbage does not belong in the lake, why is it that so passively people film these area and nonchalantly talk about boats and trash appearing under drought, only to celebrate it is going under again ? Are we in a third world country ?

Rubbing my hands to read all the same "repeat" comment about trash removal. If you're responding, you've already read the comment section...SO WHY DO YOU SAY THE SAME THING EVERYONE ELSE DOES? Good grief.

Ha well hey, can't say I blame them. Every time I go down there I'm still shocked at how much garbage and debris is everywhere, even away from the shore line

I just don’t understand why people do not clean up the s…t. There should be nothing to, just nature!

why nobody care and remove these crap boats and dangerous metal scrap and tires???

The Park Service does not have funding or resources to actually remove all of it. They "document" reported hazards instead
