Lake Sabrina to Blue Lake to Baboon Lake Cross-country Summer Backpacking

In today's video, we visit Baboon Lake, a quiet lake that starts from one of the busiest trailheads in Eastern Sierra. The trail passes Blue Lake, packed with day hikers and backpackers due to its accessibility. Maintained trail ends at Donkey Lake, so to reach Baboon Lake requires some cross-country skills, including route finding and rock scrambling. But the reward is complete solitude.
Trailhead elevation: 9111 ft (2777 m)

Was the ground still snow covered when you were there?

@@IAmATravelAddict was there in mid-Aug, but w/ double the snowpack, water levels were high (eg rocks to cross dingleberry were submerged), and there were still lots of skeeters. We didnt have to walk thru snow, and we're able to avoided it on our way up to echo lake. That lake was still 1/2 ice. The traverse to echo col required ice ax and crampons. We were planning on it and had the gear, but decided not to since tons of rain was coming. The mountains around baboon lake had tons of snow. Beautiful.

@@johnhelmuth9718 Yeah, what a crazy year. With El Nino, we might get another great snow year. I think this is the first time in a while we've had so much snow that never melted. If we get more snow this year, maybe it restore some of the glaciers.

I assume you fish, looking at your screen name. I don't, but I know plenty of people do at Blue Lake, just FYI. Donkey Lake is not that much further, and there's a trail, so you can check that out, too.

Great video, thank you! Really enjoyed watching this! Would you say taking the route you found & marked on the way down would be a lot easier to go up? I'm bringing my 62 year old mom to the area this summer & am undecided if we should attempt this lake or not. She is fit but I don't think she would appreciate a total scramble....

It might be too much for her, as there are several spots that require scrambling, even with the easy route. However, without knowing her fitness level, I don't want to make any recommendations solely based on her age (I've once met an 80 year old backpacking). Remember, you can always go as far as you can and turn around. This trail has some amazing views even if you only go as far as Blue Lake.

@@IAmATravelAddict Thank you so much! 🙏 We will definitely make it up to Blue Lake, and past to Hungry Packer lake, Midnight Lake, etc. It's more of the off-trail rock scrambling that had me nervous in this video 😬 I think I will strike this one from our itinerary & stick with the actual trailed lakes 😅
