"Lake Kivu contains at least 60 billion cubic meters of methane and 300 billion cubic meters of carbon dioxide, and researchers have long been concerned that a disruptive quake could cause the same kind of gas release seen in Cameroon." FFS!!!! "A scheme initiated in 2010 to use methane trapped in the lake as a fuel source to generate electricity in Rwanda has led to a degree of CO 2 degassing.[16] During the procedure for extracting the flammable methane gas used to fuel power stations on the shore, some CO 2 is removed in a process known as catalyst scrubbing. It is unclear whether enough gas will be removed to eliminate the danger of a limnic eruption at Lake Kivu." Crazy! But at least there is a plan to lower the risks! And if it also generates energy the better. hope the scheme ends up working.

Many other lakes have the same deadly potential. Seeing so many dead animals and humans laying were they fell…..was apocalyptic. Makes you think about the fear and terror this caused millennia ago. Fun fact, during a volunteer aid tour in Africa (coincidentally, I learnt this in Cameroon), I was told that the best way to pronounce names of places/things/people are to try and do it as basic as possible with no application to how we pronounce things in our side of the globe. So, it isn’t like Nai-os, it’s pronounced N-eeos
