I lived in the Tri-Cities (where Hanford is located) for seven years. They are still cleaning up Hanford, and there was a leak from one of the containers while I lived there. But they do not seem to have managed to poison the Columbia river--which is good, given that it drains most of the Northwest United States.

I lived in Russia as a missionary for 2 years, and served in Chelyabinsk (got there 2 weeks after the meteorite in 2013) for a few months. It was the only city where we had clear tap water instead of green or rust brown water, and we joked about it being a consequence of radiation in the water supply :)

As a writer I am suddenly fascinated by this story. There’s so much interesting symbolism, lakes of death, cities that don’t exist, ominous lights in the sky, feels more like a surreal piece of dystopian fiction than real life. Though that could be said about much of the USSR’s early years.

The thing I think is so crazy is how good he was at hiding those aspects on his drawings to really prove his point about how the russian govt. only lets you see what they want you too. I even went back to the first time he showed the picture, and they were the exact same. Weird

My grandpa used to work in one of those facilities, noone knew about it, but right now his health is quite good, he only has sleeping issues and needs a custom mask for sleeping (doctor said he hasnt slept normally since 1998 or somewhere around that time)

@Kento Bento 4:55 you talk about open-cycle cooling system, yet you show closed loop cooling with primary and secondary loops. Also in PWR you HAVE to circulate water through the core in order to cool and moderate it properly. When you look at the animation you see closed loop that could be a hint as well.

Uranium not plutonium in the video. You can handle raw uranium. It’s dirt with more uranium than typical dirt (yes it’s everywhere in small amounts). Plutonium comes out of a reactor, so very radioactive and toxic to boot.

I am studying nuclear physics in my physics course and it is interesting. Yet difficult and complex to come up with. You can literally change one element into another like alpha decay which changes plutonium-239 into uranium-235 and Helium when a nuclear reaction happens.
