Lake District Cat Bells walk | Borrowdale Valley + Keswick Boat Ride

On this trip, I fell in LOVE with the Borrowdale Valley inside the Lake District National Park. In this video, we have a quick nosey around Keswick town centre, before taking the Keswick Boat across Derwent Water to Hawes End to undertake one of the most popular Lake District Birkett Walk 's - the Catbells Wainwright. The route for the most part is well maintained - most of it is owned and managed by the National Trust, though there are some sections allowing hikers to have a good old Lake District Scramble - should they choose (as there are alternative paths off to the side of the scramble sections). The Cat Bells walk is incredibly popular among those who choose to visit Cumbria. In part because it is an easy Lake District walk, but when you combine the walk with the Keswick Boat - known as the Keswick Launch, it's a rather splendid way of beginning and ending the Catbells Hike. Should you wish to extend the walk further, once at Cat Bells elevation of 1481', it's not too much more effort to reach Maiden Moor, which is easily seen on a clear day.

I hope you enjoy this video. If you do, it would be great if you could consider giving the video a 'like' or subscribing if you're not already as it really helps my channel. If you're interested in the Lake District, you can watch my Lake District Vlogs here: kzread.info/head/PLz6dvaRLMZ_p-LDkOY8DoNDMJFuRxkOiR Have you hiked Catbells? What were your thoughts? Do you have a better hike you could recommend as I'll be back in the Lake District again this year and am always keen to hear recommendations from people.

Fantastic video of catbells. I am planning on attempting it in a few weeks as my first ever hill walk. Having watched a fair few videos of it, this is by far the most informative. Thank you for taking the time to make it, and you have yourself a new subscriber!!

I've never done cat bells but several in the area, my favourite easy walk is to force crag mine and then on to the force itself. So many idiots go up "easy hills" with any of the right equipment, and it's probably the same people who leave the rubbish. Thanks for taking me to one of my favourite areas. God bless

Hi Darren. A few people on here and on Facebook have been mentioning places just to the west of Catbells - though I didn't know about Force Crag Mine and a quick image search is now very much making me want to hike there! You more than welcome to the virtual tag-along, pleased you liked seeing the area again! 🙏

Hi Carl, thank you so much for such a lovely and thoughtful comment 🙏 I was very unsure about the timelapse in the editing stage as I wasn't sure if it would feel like the video was dragging on and nothing new was happening, but you're now the 2nd person to have passed comment on liking it, so this really means a lot.

This is another one of those hikes that’s I’ve heard of but couldn’t have told you where in the country it is - now I know! There sure is a lot of cool stuff to do up in the Lake District. Love how you had to catch the boat to get across to the starting point, certainly added another dynamic to the day. Oh I thought that dog was going to knock your camera over! Was that as close as it looked 😬. I can understand why people would want to call people to show off where they are but boy is it annoying, especially when you’re just trying to enjoy the views with a little bit of peace and quiet thrown in. Enjoyed the time lapses in this one, especially the one where you crossed the lake - very smooth. Good of the Captain to do that, it just shows that if you don’t ask you don’t get.

Yeah the dog was quite close to the camera, but truth be told, I've had it fall off far higher things than just the little gorilla tripod so it would have been okay had the dog knocked it over. It was another dog just off camera that the black Labrador hadn't seen until the last minute and got a right old shock when the dog twigged. A moment of entertainment! I feel like my comments about the Facetiming could be met with criticism as I'm up there vlogging into a camera, but I move off to one side whenever possible, certainly don't yell and will always be patient to allow others to do their thing first. Though we recently were outside a vineyard with an honesty box selling apple juice when a group of ladies came past. We moved off to one side to let them buy what they wanted - but oh my goodness, I've never known anyone to take as long as they did to collect some bottles and leave change in the honesty box. I was polite and patient... that was the main thing! 🤣 But seriously though - 10 minutes!! It was so good of the boat captain to offer to pop the go pro on the front of the boat. I was buzzing after I watched back the footage! I always tell my Tutor Group if you don't ask (in a polite way) then you often don't get!

July often sees heatwaves and we've been in one for a couple of days and it's set to continue. Of course this is hot by our standards - getting into the 30's - though I bet it must be hotter in Saudi Arabia! When I was at university, I spent my summers working on a children's summer camp in Upstate New York and on July 4th would have a lot of fun with the other British counsellors decorating the dining hall with Union Jack flags and singing 'Rule Britannia' - all in good spirit of course - with the campers chanting back 'USA, USA!' 🤣

I didn't know about so much of what your research brought up. Certainly not the history and I didn't know about the May/June festival either, and that sounds really good. I had no idea that in Arabic countries you had to retire by 60! In the UK, it's currently age 66 before you can get what's known as the 'state pension'. The idea of the state pension is you've paid your taxes for your working life, and now you can retire and the government will look after you. This isn't much money - especially if you don't own your home and still need to pay rent, so many people will have a private pension they pay into too. With a private pension, if you manage it well, you could TECHNICALLY retire whenever you want - but you wouldn't get the state pension until you hit the older age. Some professions such as mine in teaching, it's different again. We can take the pension earlier, but then we get hit with receiving less, or we could save up, retire early and live off our own savings for a few years until we reach an age where we don't get penalised. It's all very messy and unfortunately a difficult one to answer.

Hi Clare, thank you for the suggestion. I've just had another person on Facebook recommend Causey Pike which seems to be just across from Barrow which you suggest. I must confess, I had to do a double take as I thought when you said Barrow, you meant Barrow in Furness. I know Catbell's isn't the best, but figure it's better than Barrow in Furness.
