The leathers surface is sooo delicate

Oh man, thanks so much for this video. Everything you mentioned in terms of problems with feet and cycling are thing's I've been trying to negotiate for years. Wider forefoot, narrow heel? yes Low volume forefoot, higher instep? Yes! Collapsing arches and rolling ankles that need more support? YES! Do I find shoes that feel pretty good but push my bike toe inwards? YES (this has been a problem i have nerve damage now on the end of my big toe). Shoes that lock my heel, I can guarantee will be too narrow and will kill my toes. I've been a long fan of the dual boas in this configuration for a long time for this reason. ATM, i'm using scott shoes as they're relatively wide, have dual boas that are far apart, but the width extends further back and heels don't feel locked in. I've had some success with Northwave too if anyone is reading with similar issues. But I will certainly be investigating these when they are in stores near me. and i love they do a MTB version.

Great in-depth review I’ve been using the Lake 332 in a size 46 Regular would it be the same fit with slightly more toe room in the CX 333 I also have a low arch .

So for the same fit you would need the Narrow and yes the toe box is bigger due to the new boa placement and the new shaping of the upper around the forefoot area. The low arch will be nicely supported by the pronounced instep and carbon material. Thanks for your comment

On a 332 currently. The switch to a wraparound/nesting tongue always concerns me with bulk and hotspots. Interesting that they renamed the widths.

It’s definetly not bulky. And the boa closures really help you get maximum tightening control in combo with the upper being flexible I’m sure you would be surprised how good it really is.

Hi Dougie, have u tried riding on the one with microfibre upper?? Do they get scuffed easily? I have a pair of Quocs and just after a few rides there are permanent black scuff marks.. Wonder if i should go for the microfibre upper or wait for the kangaroo leather ones.

the microfibre is a better choice for what you are referring to as it is more abrasion resistant than the leather. the lake leather upper is really supple but the downside is it does scuff

So sizing has changed. I have a CX 332 in 43.5 regular. According to the Lake site I would now order a 43.5 narrow. However, this does not mean it is “narrow”” it’s just a new term leak has applied to sizing. Am I correct ? It’s a bit confusing - ❤your content and explanations using Anton of the foot.

You are correct, you would be a 43.5 narrow in a CX333.

Really interesting video, so thanks for producing it. Given the similarity to the 403 in terms of the last, Carbitex panel, how the upper wraps the foot, and also and the location of the Boas, how would you say it differs? Is there a foot type that is still better served by the 403? Thanks in advance

Good question. The 403 is also a super technical shoe. The 333 will work for more people because the 403 is a much closer fit due to the “bathtub” design of the carbon sole. So if you have a very high volume foot and want a race shoe from Lake the 333 is a safer option as it has slightly more give in the way it’s been designed. Also I would say that the 403 is superior for mid to high volume feet if you are looking for a full blown no holds barred racing shoe as it’s so moulded around you foot once you have done the heat moulding there is just maximum security and stability. The “cost” is because the bathtub design is so stiff that if you have any extra width beyond what the shoe has been designed for then it can be uncomfortable. So the 403 is crazy good but definitely isn’t for everyone

That’s very helpful, thanks. I’ve got mid volume feet, but with very high arches that pronate significantly, so wondered if the extra mouldable sections of the 403 and the bigger Carbitex panel would give more support than the 333?

I’m a 43.5 in the MX238 but measure up more like a 44 wide in the 403, which hopefully should mean there’s plenty of width in the forefoot to avoid any issues about the carbon bathtub at the forefoot.

Ciao, Does the heel in the wide sole remain the same or is it also wide? I have a foot 257mm and 94mm wide. do you think the 41.5 regular is correct?

The heel in the wide is still tight and supportive - re fit did you add the 5mm to your foot?

Looks good, still prefer the look of the CX332 though.

The 333 you will get away with more foot shapes as the upper is more generous and the sole is less aggressive. The 403 is the “ultimate” as it is closer to your foot and more responsive. Hey thanks for the reply I appreciate it. one more thing I’m looking at with the new CX 333 is the stack height. I’m coming from a bont vaypor which as a super low stack height of 3mm or so. i had a cx403, and i didn’t enjoy the substantial stack height on that one. I asked Lake directly about this, but they didn’t help. Do you have any approximation of what it is?

333 or 242? What’s the factors someone needs to think about if choosing between the two?

Other than looks and the fact that some individuals are concerned with the ethicalities of using animal products. I find that the leather shoe gives a little extra volume and comfort for those on the higher end of the volume scale for the shoe. The microfibre shoe is good in the opposite case as it feels tighter on for the same size, which can be useful for some.

In terms of the inside of the shoe (as it is not leather): is it slippier at the heel? as you mentioned with the leather it kindof locks in the foot

@@SrMXP-on2cu the heelcup is leather and the carbon heat moulded shell moulds really nicely round your foot

What are the pros/cons of the leather vs synthetic?

So the size 44 narrow weighed 307g in microfibre the leather 314g so there is no difference in the weight really. The microfibre is obviously fake synthetic leather so from an ethological stand point people prefer it. The microfibre stands up to minor abrasion slightly better. The real leather is softer and conforms around your feet better once it beds in it feels ace.

Avoid sizing up if possible it’s a bad idea as it makes it very hard to get the correct clean position. Are you based in Europe uk or usa? I can recommend a good product that is supportive but low volume and perfect for cycling shoes

off the shelf non custom probably a superfeet carbon - ideally you can get something customised with a posted heel thats stiff and holds its shape under load - Masterfit if you are in the US retul custom insoles in the UK or Superfeet custom carbon thin or if you want full full custom and are willing to spend a good few hundred then let me know and i can make some local recommendations @@apollochimp

Oh ok yes I tried that once, but didn't give me enough support in the arches so I actually ended up buying gel arch inserts like the women's high heel variety and stuck them under the lake insole that comes with my CX332s and it works really well to be honest. @@dougieshawbikefitter
