I just had a pair of greenbacks produce 4 babies... 1 Yellow, 2 blues and 1 green.... Biggest surprise I've ever had breeding gouldians.

How can you tell if a gouldian finch is male or female

Males have brighter more vibrant colors, also, when they are in breeding condition their beaks are a pearly white color. Hens have a duller coloring to their feathers and their beaks are black when they are in breeding condition.

Cage is good for pre selecting your own pairs. Downside is numerous cages to clean and refill supplies. Aviary breeding means your birds will select their own partner with only a single selected area to refill supplies plus the advantage of extra space for your birds to exercise.

It really depends on the species. Some species do better breeding in an aviary setting and other do better in a cage setting like the societies or the canaries.
