    Not to do with this podcast but something I’ve noticed in other videos, have you tried sand instead of wood chip on the aviary floors, a lot less messy looking but I guess the down side is is that it doesn’t soak up as much water.

  • @birdnerd
    @birdnerd8 күн бұрын

    I have heard of people using sand as the bottom and I’ve heard positive and negative things about it. I’ve never tried it but I do like the look of a bottom sand floor.

    Is there any breeding seasons, if so what are the months ??

  • @birdnerd
    @birdnerd8 күн бұрын

    For zebra finches they will breed all year round if you let them. I would recommend to not let them breed until spring and summer months when it’s warmer so that the chicks don’t get cold.

    Hey, rich. It's Pete from Chicago. I'm having a hard time finding society fences. I can't find them anymore. Petsmart don't sell them anymore. And some other pet shops don't sell them anymore. What's going on? I want to get 2 more and what do you do if you have a sick society?

  • @birdnerd
    @birdnerd8 күн бұрын

    You could look on Craig’s list and see if there are any local society breeders in your area. If it’s sick you can give it a broad-spectrum antibiotic or contact a local vet.

    @birdnerd Once you find a favorite the obsession never ends. I've been thinking of getting some canaries. I moved into a place where the property owner has chickens with slate walkways and brick planters I'm helping systematize things, she's probably going to downsize the chickens and take on some birds. There's high ceiling bird aviary already behind the coup so.

  • @birdnerd

    Very sweet, I did this many years ago when I had lots of aviarys. I had Chinese painted qual, and also a pair of Californian Qual too. The Californian quail actually sat on around 20 eggs in a box off the ground, around 5ft , and only one chick hatched, the rest were infertile. They raised it and it was a female. Loved your video, they are like little bumblebees 😍

  • @birdnerd
    @birdnerd11 күн бұрын

    Very cool. I’d love to have some California quail but they are a little too skittish to keep them with other finches in my current set up. But I do have lots of wild California quail in my community.
