    On borrowed talent, chargers started falling apart once Marty left because he was an amazing team builder. You see it very often a coach having a great first year, just because his first year is usually a result of the previous coach.

    @Eric Gilbreath They had the Patriots beat. Game was over and instead of going down McCree fumbles the ball back to the Patriots. The next year they lose afc championship in new England. Rivers had a blown ACL from the previous week in Indianapolis. They were good enough.

  • @jyashin

    @jyashin

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Jamesmax22 They were close, but not good enough. It gets far more difficult to climb a single rank the higher up you go. That is, going from Divisional Champion to Conference Champion is far harder than going from losing season to Wildcard team. It was clear the NFL was transitioning from run-oriented to pass-oriented. Marty was way too old school and relied entirely off the run game, which admittedly the Chargers were the best. Even their passing game involved Tomlinson, or occassionally Gates (a TE) or Sproles (primarily returner). Would the Chargers be better than having Norv Turner at the helm. Definitely. Would they have beaten Indy, Baltimore, Pitt, or NE? You'd have to play at least 2 of them, and that wasn't happening under Marty's system.

    Bill Fleetwood Salary cap rules changed is why they stopped having success. Jimmy Johnson didn’t do much after leaving Dallas. If he was as great as people say he was he would have won more than just 1 playoff game in Miami. Jimmy Johnson success came from Jerry Jones pocket book. Being able to go out and buy the best players

  • @mauricedavis1740

    @mauricedavis1740

    4 жыл бұрын

    Jason Juelg but if that was the case Jerry Jones would of won more Super Bowls since then since his “pocketbook” is so big. The cowboys are the most overrated team of the last 20 years, they haven’t even made it back to the NFC championship since the 90’s. It’s not a coincidence that the last time the cowboys were a dominant team was when someone who actually knew football was in the building. The proof has been in the pudding for 25 years now, jerry Jones is a great businessman but he knows nothing about football..

  • @mauricedavis1740

    @mauricedavis1740

    4 жыл бұрын

    Jason Juelg and Jimmy Johnson was only in Miami for a few seasons, he wasn’t there long enough to build anything. Not to mention those teams really weren’t that talented, Dan Marino was at the end of his career and he was a shell of himself. With all that said jerry Jones in 25 years only won two more playoff games than jimmy did in Miami in a few seasons. Think about that..

  • @jasonjuelg5045

    Mike Youngblood - I see you're an older fan as well. Gene Klein was a wreck as an owner; he cared more about his horses at Del Mar than he did about running an NFL franchise. Every one of the instances you mentioned were cost-cutting moves, not football moves. When he sold to Alex G. Spanos, I was thrilled... not so much because Spanos was like an incoming Messiah, but, because Klein would no longer be around. However, now with Alex's slapdick son, Dean, running the show, we're just as inept in the front office as we were under Klein's leadership.

    Marty was the right guy for that team. And you had an amazing running back that fit his style. The Chargers were a force during his time there and there's no doubt in my mind that they would've won at least one Super Bowl. But there were issues between Marty and the GM. When you have issues within the organization, it doesn't matter how much you're winning. It's sad but it's a proven fact. Even I was blown away after Marty was let go after finishing 14-2.

    Green eyed Monster that just means that the team's executive management were inept. If Marty did not break any rules in the organization then he should not have been let go while he was achieving such a high level of success. Period. The GM should have found a way to get along with Marty since Marty was only doing his job, which was winning and making the team money.

    The Chargers , like the entire AFC , couldn't get past Bill Belichek and the Patriots. It's no shame , the AFC is simply tougher in the 2000s to get to the Super Bowl . Between Peyton Manning, Ben Rothlesburger, Tom Brady , Ray Lewis .. it's kinda hard to squeeze in a Super Bowl run going through that good of competition. Rex Ryan had his Jets rolling, the Chargers just simply wasn't good enough to get it done . The biggest mistake the Bolts made was letting Marty Schottenheimer go , the second biggest was letting Wade Phillips slip away , the third was bringing in Mike McCoy ( a complete waste of Philip Rivers and Gates getting a ring )

    Michael Schmidt I always thought 2006 was more lined up for them. First round bye and players were heathy. I have no doubt they could have beaten the Colts in the AFC championship and they would have run roughshod over the Bears. But 2007 was also a great year for them but they just didn't have enough against the Patriots. I still think that if those players were healthy they could have won that game

    I never like Tomlinson. Just based on his interviews. He would say in the same sentence "I'm a humble player, I dont do fancy celebrations, and that's what great players like myself do." And then would go on and on talking himself in 3rd party about how great he is. Lol Called himself humble and great in the same comment, and in fact DID celebrate with his finger roll move with the ball after he scored, EVERY TIME.

    100% agree with him here. AJ Smith was a ego-maniac who fired a 14-2 coach just because he wasn't getting his ass kissed enough, then hired fucking NORV TURNER to replace him. Oh and he gave a Super Bowl winning QB to New Orleans to top it off.

    As a Bronco fan,I always knew our best chance was AJ Smith was their GM,& might screw up the most talented team in the NFL. When he fired Marty after 14-2,& hired Not Turner...I knew Smith was clueless. Turner was a good offensive coordinator,but had already proven he was a bad head coach. Just ask Mark Schlefeth,who before coming to Denver,had Turner as his head coach in DC. LT is so right though...that Charger team had the most talent for like 3 yrs at least,but never even made a SB.

    The year was 2005 when they finished 12-4. The Chargers had Drew Brees, Doug Flutie, Philip Rivers, LaDainian Tomlinson, Lorenzo Neal, Michael Turner and Darren Sproles in the backfield... they did not make the playoffs. Then again in 2010 the best team they ever had in franchise history finished 1st in overall offense , 1st in overall defense (1st and only team to ever to achieve this feat) did not make the playoffs... That's Chargers football right there.

    To all these idiots on here looking through the rose colored glasses of nostalge, Marty Schottenhiemers playoff record was 6-13. That's right folks only six wins in 19 post season games. He went to the playoffs with several very good teams but could manage only six wins! Schottenhiemer in my opinion would have had to have had a team far superior to anyone else to win the Super Bowl. LT loved him because all he did was work horse his backs giving LT tons of carries, catches and yards. Marty played it way too conservative to win in the post season. You gotta get a little aggressive sometimes and take a chance especially in the playoffs were everyone is pretty good and stakes are very high. Marty would coach himself out of wins playing not to lose, always going with percentages and was very predictable to coach against. He was a very good coach and in my opinion one suited best for a young team in need of coaching up and working on fundamentals, the kind of guy you fire once you have all the pieces in place, however Norve Turner was not that guy to hire.

    Chris H The issue is that the Chargers already made their bed with Schottenheimer. The team was based around his philosophies and he was its spiritual leader. You can’t just change coaches in the middle of a run, alienate your best player(s), and let your GM power trip and expect it to not fall apart. They needed to keep Marty for the rest of that run, for better or worse

    I still want to know why when LT was dropped by the Chargers he said 'It's time to win the championship' and then went and joined the Jets! What was he doing with the Chargers if he wasn't trying to win the championship? As much as I admired him as a running back I didn't like the way he badmouthed the Chargers when he was let go and then was allowed to return for one day and retire as a Charger and the way he fawned all over Dean Spanos during his HOF speech just smacks of pure hypocrisy to me! Maybe that's why Dean Spanos looked totally bored throughout the entire speech! Btw, I'm no fan of Dean Spanos and the day he sells the team to someone who quite frankly does give a damn will be the greatest day in the Chargers history!
