We could actually address homelessness for about $20 billion a year, which amounts to like 0.5% of our annual budget. Haha. But we do spend about 1% of our annual budget ($47 billion) on affordable housing now. Just not for homeless. Would take another $20 billion.

Roof over your head, heating, decent management, no vermin, no bugs(bed bugs, roaches etc), cold & hot water. That is living. If you want to live over across La Brea and more west then yeah you are going to be paying 2K or more a month. East LA isn't having too much of a hike, a friend of mine found a really good apartment 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom for $1,400. In a nice neighborhood.

We should build affordable housing for those that have jobs and lives in LA. But for anyone without work and who can freely move to another city perhaps they can be resettled in towns with high unemployment. If there are any. If there are too many in LA then perhaps we could build apartments in other towns where the homeless can be resettled in exchange for working in that town. That could grow the economy there and relieve the stress on LA?

We even tested with a few people who were promised services by these organizations, and more often than not, the responses were untimely if there was a response at all. I don't know much about LA, but I'm sure there is an agenda to feed on the impoverished by opening organizations helping a few and pocketing the rest. I reckon Increased immigration will only spark a growth in these types of organizations and their behavior.

As a resident of NYC, I worry that our great city is next. Recently the homeless people in my area has increased tremendously and I don't understand why our city government is just ignoring these people. NY would rather give a company like Amazon that is worth over a trillion and their CEO, richest guy on Earth by a huge margin, hundred millions of dollars in tax break and benefits. Why are these politicians keep getting elected when they do absolutely nothing but talk a "big game" during election.

@@JenJHayden I agree homeless has always been a problem but recently it is getting worse. Areas that previously did not have homeless people now have homeless in groups asking you for money when you pass by. I am in LES NYC and a few years ago there was rarely any homeless sleeping on the train station, now they are everywhere in the stations. I actually think it might have something to do with our current mayor De Blasio. He believe the police were arresting too many people so he decide that some petty and quality of life crimes should be remove. Now homeless can sleep anywhere they want and pee freely on the street while smoking a joint /drinking alcohol.....

Brian - You realize the housing shortage is due to the high demand to live there. That high demand prices families out of communities (landlord raising rent/homes worth more so selling for more) California only has so much room to build. We see this in Hawaii and New York as well. It’s not hard to comprehend 🙄

Immigration can work if it is LEGAL, comes in rational numbers, and is fair. It is reasonable for unemployed people to decry immigration without increased social welfare. This is the driving factor behind anti-migrant sentiment in the US. Simply rules such as denying welfare rights to the first two or three generations of migrants in exchange for increased welfare (for example, increased and extended unemployment insurance) would do so much to fix such resentments. Why those on the left and right are against these simple solutions are inexplicable. We could easily allow the migrants to agree to them in exchange for staying. They should be revenue neutral as well.

We need a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants in America. Alienating immigrants who come to America seeking a better life is not the way to deal with immigration. Most illegals here came with a visa and stayed beyond that visa. They need a chance to live

I have found that Americans who are worried about immigrants taking their jobs are not competitive in the job market in the first place. If you are worried about someone who doesn't speak english taking your job you need to reassess your job skills. I am more in favor of more immigrants to fill the needs of all these low wage jobs so those that are doing them have room to move up. Americans say they love free markets and competition until they have to change their behavior in order to compete. I think it's better to have people come live in America, grow the economy here, grow the tax base here, 2/3 of all economic activity is because of consumers. America's economic model is based on an ever expanding population and native born Americans are have fewer and fewer children. The unemployment rate is 3.7%(Sept 2018) there is a record number of unfilled jobs, 7.1 million. Baby Boomers are retiring at a rate of 10,000 a day. Immigrants are more likely to open businesses and employ more people than those born in the US. Now is the time to open immigration up. We can open immigration up without increasing funding for need based assistance, after all this is the best job market in nearly 50 years.

Like it's a fad or something. There are a lot of legit homeless but some literally look like they are in a movie because their clothes look like a costume department stylized them for a film. It's frustrating because they legit don't want it to change. They almost enjoy living this "life of being edgy"

If they want live at Desires location, then they should work for it. Not doing nothing all day long. I guess they are better then getting money from taxpayers. I hope they can wake up and be responsible for their self and society.
