@@alistairwalker2850t’s not just that he’s a father but that Eli and Donnelly personally know each other. He confesses to trying to stop being a sick fuck but Eli refuses to, so that was the last straw. Not saying him being a father isn’t a factor, just saying there’s more to it.

At 26:20 there's an important clue: The rope is used for boats AND church bells. They then spend a later case fixating on the boating use looking for a sailer, but im the end the killer is found in an abandoned church where he kills the victims.

This game made me realize I have no idea what jewelry my wife wears, aside from the engagement/wedding rings I bought her. I found a sapphire ring next to the kitchen sink I had no idea existed. She told me that it was a faux-sapphire, gold-plated ring she bought for $35 last year, and hardly ever wore. I angrily told her that if she had been murdered and Detective Phelps had searched my home, he probably would have found it and yelled at me.

I don’t like when this game shows you the crime in the beginning. You play as a detective who never witnessed the crime so you as the player should not be able to witness it. BECAUSE THE ANSWER IS THERE IN THE FIRST 5 SECONDS AFTER THE TITLE! You see the build of the killer, and you see the paper boy hat. There’s only one suspect who looks like that and wears that hat - ELI. What I do like is how much the game convinces you it’s the husband and the case takes a long time to complete so you may very well forget what the killer at the beginning looked like. Still, always try and remember every detail of the opening in a case of the game shows you the crime!!

Putting aside that the murders were actually conducted by the Black-Dhalia-esque killer, Garrett Mason, I think the evidence would still lean more towards Eli than Hugo. Let me explain: 1.) Eli had the golden butterfly brooch, and since the Elgin wrist watch and wedding ring were not in their proper casings back at the Moller residence and markings were found on Diedre's body for those items, it's likely that Eli would've taken those as well, probably to pawn them off for extra money. 2.) Eli held an occupation at Hennessy Marine, a boating company. The rope used to strangle Deidre was a triple braid, which Galloway points out are commonly used on boats and mooring lines, and Carruthers mentions are also used for bell ropes in churches at times. None of these occupations matches up with Hugo's job as a mechanic. It's also worth pointing out that, while Hugo did learn to strangle people with rope through the Army, and that triple braid would be his choice of rope, if he were to strangle someone, his preferred tool would be wire. 3.) Another tie to Eli's job at Hennessy Marine would be the bloodstained coveralls, which had a large imprinted "H.M." on it. It would be easy to assume that the coveralls belonged to Hugo, as "H.M." matches the initials for his name (Hugo Moller) and coveralls would be common attire for a mechanic. But Eli mentions that the work clothes given to him by Hennessy Marine were green coveralls, much like the one covered in blood in the trunk of Diedre's car. It's more likely that the "H.M." on the coveralls stand for Hennessy Marine, as Eli mentions that the building location has a sign that also uses the abbreviated "H.M." on it. If the "H.M." really was Hugo's initials, it would make more sense that it would be placed on a name tag rather than in bold diagonal print, nevermind that fact that it would be just his initials. 4.) The one piece of evidence that legitimately implicated Hugo to be the killer was the Chrysler tire iron. Now, I'm no expert on the mechanical workings of mid to late 40s cars, so I can't say for certain whether or not tire irons would be the same for all Chrysler models of that era. Assuming that they are not, there was nothing that suggests the tire iron used to knock out Diedre specifically came from a Chrysler Airflow, the car that Hugo drives. The only connection would be that it was made for use on Chrysler cars. The only point of contention for this piece of evidence to be placed on Eli is where he got the tire iron to begin with. 5.) Belmont High School is a common haunt for Eli, as it is suggested that he is a repeat offender on cases of sexual violence towards minors. He does not go out of his way to deny this when pressed about it during his interrogation. Assuming that events like a school dance would take place at that school district's high school, that would mean Diedre would have to go there to pick up her daughter, Michelle. This put her in a prime position to be mauled and then strangled by Eli, though the motives for assaulting her could be called into question as Eli preferred young teen girls over older women, and her autopsy revealed no traces of semen, meaning the intent was not sexual. His testimony that he saw Hugo walk out of the car to remove his coveralls and place them in the trunk along with the brooch is faulty due to the fact that he would be referring to Diedre's car, a Chevrolet, when in actuality, Hugo drove a Chrysler Airflow as mentioned previously. 6.) If Hugo had not attempted to burn his bloody size eight shoes in the incinerator, they likely would have been taken to Ray Pinker for a forensic inspection. This would have revealed whether or not Hugo's later confession to helping his coworker skin rabbits held any water, as the blood would have been traced. The fact that the shoes were size eights implicates both Hugo and Eli, although Eli might be a lot looser with his shoe sizes, and matches with the shoe prints found at the sight of Diedre's corpse.

A lot of the evidence could've gone either way. Nothing really concrete;y stuck with Hugo, but, the overalls would most likely belong to Eli (or, at least from Hennessy Marine), as it wouldn't really make sense for Hugo to put his initials on the front of his work gear, rather than his first name. Also, I think the major point is that Eli was a known problem, while Hugo had no history of serious crimes (for that point in time. I don't agree with spousal abuse), even though he was acting a bit suspicious.

Havent completed the game yet, but it was obivous to me right from the beginning that not Eli neither Hugo were the killer. If it was up to me, I wouldnt have charged any of them. However, I wanted to imagine myself into the place of Phelps. There were tons of evidence pointing towards the husband. Eli was indeed a creep, as it was admitted even by him, however he was no killer. Phelps had to make a choice. He knew that he has to bring in someone. He knew he had to close the case in order to perform well. But Phelps is a rational man (at least trying to be). He doesn't act on instinct. Eli had to be charged but not with murder. I made the choice that Phelps would make: listen to the evidence.

This is why in the next case you hear that Hugo has been charged for the murder, while Rooney is still arrested for something like sexual deviancy. Technically both subjects are arrested after this case, the priority is who is a bigger threat to the public.

So far it’s been challenging but always did well but this case really shook it up and got one star. In a sense it’s perfect for the noir everything’s gray vibe but I was disappointed in myself. Both of them really seemed like they could be the killer.

Eli Rooney had nothing to do with the murder, but he was the last known person to see Deidre Moller alive (aside from Garrett Mason), and he had a significant piece of evidence, along with a record. Along with what Itachi said, charging Hugo Moller would result in Michelle being moved away (that's one of the ending messages, if you charge Hugo).

For anyone confused as to why picking Eli is required for a 5 star rating in this case, The LAPD wanted to nail Eli for the murder of Deidre, especially after he was caught at Belmont High. Having the Butterfly on him tied him to the case, which would make it easier to remove the pedophile. Canonically, I believe charging Hugo Moller is the correct choice even though you get reamed for it. There's just so much more evidence/motive tying him to the crime, and the dialogue in later cases seems to back this up. Both endings here are messed up. You let a known pedophile walk, charging (at the time) the right suspect, or you charge the pedophile and let the main murder suspect walk.

But in retrospect, we know that Hugo is innocent regardless - just extremely unlucky coincidence. So is Eli - for this murder, anyway. I blame Eli for the time being, but only because as the captain says, he doesn't want to leave the daughter an orphan.

I don't think there was enough evidence pointing at Hugo, at least not more than what pointed toward Eli. It was never said who the coveralls belonged to, but I'm guessing it'd be easier for the real murderer to get them from Hennessy Marine than to get Hugo's personal coveralls. And, while a tire iron for a Chrysler was found at the scene, as the murder weapon, Hugo never said he was missing his. Meanwhile, Eli held a possession that tied him directly to Deidre, while he was also in the vicinity of the victim's car when the cops found him. About Deidre's car, according to the school janitor, it was parked at the school by some random, likely after the school dance. I don't think Hugo would spent the time to do all of that, since he was a guy who worked in the morning. He didn't immediately fall to pieces upon hearing news about Deirdre, but it seemed like he genuinely didn't know that she was dead, despite him acting suspicious throughout the case.

The canon choice is arresting Rooney and letting Hugo free for a while just like Rusty mentioned. Hugo can be arrested for something else and Rooney would still be incarcerated so technically both of them are arrested after this case. Even after the Homicide cases end and all the suspects you charged are quietly released, I don't see Rooney or the leader of the homeless camp being released. They would still be incarcerated just on different charges like vagrancy and sexual deviancy.
