It is an odd thing to think that in 1974, the war was just 30 years in the past... My parents, I am Dutch, had their story's about it, time to time. I was fascinated about it. So me, and my best friend played a lot of WW2 scenes, with our Airfix toy soldiers, or dressed themselves like soldiers, with my 1940 English helmet on, and our partly American magazine pouches and an wooden frame of an M1 carabine... Later on my friend became an officer in the Dutch army, and got stationed for the UN peacekeeping force in Yugoslaviea; in 1994/95; Sebrenica. Just short before the Muslim enclave was taken over by the Serbs. (the signs he already forsaw.) He was amazed how many former Wehrmacht German weapons there were all around. The flak 4 barrel, here also to be seen, machineguns , mortars etc etc. The map he used, for his unit to navigate in the area; was German.... 1943, with an Eagle and a Swastika, still on it. History was all around, so I am not surprised about the number of German items here used. And yes, the film is well made. Me and my friend saw is also in the theatre in those days. It was an inspiration of our way we played like WW2 soldiers...

Peckinpah is the only director who could have made this film. Itswhy Hollywood feared him. Coburn, Mason, Schell, Warner and the entire cast are fantastic and had to put up with so much rain and filth, and Peckinpah during its production. Great artists/art live(s) forever

One of the best WWII films made. (And also one of the very few book adaptions to be better than the book, whihc is a mess structurally, though obviously deeper regarding the psychology of the the main characters) Great film! Two seriously big mistakes I made soon after I got back to the USA from Nam. I went to a movie suggested by my new wife. "A Bridge too far", I got up and walked after the part were the Polish soldiers got murdered trying to cross the river. NOT KIA, murdered! Reminded me of same stupidity that I ran into when I was assigned a command of a fire base. Then a few years later I saw my favorite actor was in a war movie. James Coburn was one of my most favorite actors after he did "In like Flint" movies. I had a very bad PTSD episode that lasted for a week after seeing "Iron Cross." Imagine what would have happened if I had seen "Saving Private Ryan" alone. Of course, having taken me Dad with me was not all that bright. He started the war as a 2nd Lt and ended up a Major in WW2 (Just like me) We only talked and shared our experiences two times after that. I miss that man every Mother Fu**ing day. It is only that I have reached my seventies that I understand why he never wanted to talk about it. He was very drunk the two times when he did talk about it.

Title: Cross of Iron 1977. STORYLINE: 1943, on the Russian front, decorated leader Rolf Steiner (James Coburn) is promoted to Sergeant after another successful mission. Meanwhile, upper-class arrogant Prussian Captain Hauptmann Stransky (Maximilian Schell) is assigned as the new commander of his squad. After a bloody battle of Steiner's squad against the Russian troops led by the brave Lieutenant Meyer (Igor Galo), who dies in combat, the coward Stransky claims that he led his squad against the Russian and requests to be awarded with the Iron Cross to satisfy his personal ambition together with that of his aristocratic family. Stransky gives the names of Steiner and of the homosexual Lieutenant Triebig (Roger Fritz) as witnesses of his accomplishment, but Steiner, who has problems with the Army's chain of command and with Stransky's arrogance, refuses to participate in the fraud. When Colonel Brandt (James Mason) gives the order to leave the position in the front, Stransky does not retransmit the order to Steiner's squad, and they are left alone, surrounded by the enemy and have to fight to survive.

Better than this one only "Nothing new on the Western Front",the 1st. version in b&w.This considering the gernan point of view. But the russians also made good antiwar movies, after the death of Stalin,of course. The problem for us in the West is that you need subtitles or a good dubbing. The russian people as the german people are fed up with wars. They know it is useless The common people are always the loosers.

This film was made a few years after my Discharge in 1973. I generally shy away from watching war movies, most are poorly made. I didn't watch it until 1990 when a buddy had the CD and he had played it many times before I would watch. This has to be the best WW ll movie out to date. I read the book about 10 years ago when I picked it up at a thrift store in paperback. Although this movie is a strong WW ll flick, one of the best of its genre, the book is 100X stronger, it's a hell of a read and I had a hard time putting it down. I would recommend it to anybody that likes this movie (and it's a great movie), read the book. It's a true classic!

Cross of lron 1977. During World War II, Cpl. Rolf Steiner (James Coburn) is a well-respected member of the German military and a recipient of the Iron Cross, Germany's highest military honor. Envious of Steiner's award, Capt. Hauptmann Stransky (Maximilian Schell) clashes with Steiner while leading soldiers into battle along the Russian front. Desperate to receive his own Iron Cross, Stransky takes the credit for a significant attack and sparks a heated rivalry with Steiner.

I've watched this great movie quite a few times over the years since I first saw it when I was a lad of about 13 or 14, not too many years after it came out, certainly before 1980. I would have been entirely ignorant of Sam Peckinpah and only learned of his reputation and cinematic skills later as an adult. I'm in awe of that man's talent and skills so underappreciated, even unknown by many in his audiences and the wider cinema going public. I thank you deeply for the upload and hope that it stays up a good long effing time so that I might watch it again later. - Mark, Australia.
