Are you questioning whether you need to take l-tyrosine and 5-htp together? Some people are saying that if you take 5 htp for depression, that you’ll make your symptoms worse if you don’t take 5-htp and tyrosine (5-htp l tyrosine).
In this video Dr Janelle talks about how dopamine and serotonin are made in the body, serotonin deficiency and dopamine deficiency symptoms. She discusses the impact of taking l tyrosine for depression and 5-htp for depression, on their own and together. Tyrosine supplements can increase the activity of the AAAD enzyme and led to reduced serotonin levels. This doesn’t happen with tyrosine rich foods.

    Hi Janelle, I have just bought some L Tyrosine and 5htp.. My question is can I take these with Tramadol... Long story short. I'm trying to get off the tramadol as my back pain has fortunately now improved, the problem is I had become addicted to the tramadol, so Iv been having to take it, just to feel normal So my plan was to eventually get off the tramadol completely with the help of l tyrosine and 5htp.     Thank you for this info! The internet is overwhelmed with this idea of needing the two together. I personally think I need both, especially after trying L-tyrosine 1 week into starting 5htp. Your guideline recommendations are spot on. I made the mistake day 1 of trying L-tyrosine with 5htp at night and my sleep was not great, as you mentioned might happen.

    Interesting video, my husband was diagnosed 4 years ago with FTD and he has had insomnia chronically and foggy headedness during the daytime. I started him on 5htp and he has improved significantly with better sleep and increased energy and the brain dig has cleared completely! Interesting also his chronic sinusitis has resolved and he can smell again for the first time in decades. Don't know if it is curative but it sure has improved his quality of life!

    I'm sorry what is 1:10 ratio? I couldn't understand that part. Like the dosage of L Tyrosine should be 10x higher than 5 HTP? Can someone please clarify?

    Thanks for this! I stopped with my ADHD meds and am now taking tyrosine (650 mg), vitamin B complex and omega 3 in the morning and 5htp (100mg) at night. Perfect combo!

    You use too much.It must be 1:10. 5HTP in morning 50 mg and Tyrosine in evening 500 mg with other suplement b komplex cooper magnesium to better absorpcien.

    It's probably good practice for psychiatrists to test their patients for low serotonin and dopamine levels and prescribe them nootropics(5htp, l tyrosine, l theanine, st johns wort, etc.) instead of man-made medicines that have really bad side-effects and withdrawals.

But if i take 5HTp i feel calm but not wanting to do anything (its exactly the same state when you lay tired in bed and will fall asleep in some minutes). If i take L-tyrosine i either feel nothing or i feel fatigued. Whys that and what could i do or take?

    @@madlenj.4644 I just you look into other causes of depression other than serotonin and dopamine imbalances. I have a free online course that goes through diet, gut health and nutritional deficiencies. Definitely get all the blood tests recommended and rule out deficiencies.     I'm doing 5HTP and Tyrosine every night along with L-Theanine and some GABA lozenges too. These 4 really synergize quite well together. I've noticed much better sleep and a lot less depression and anxiety during the day as well.

    @@DrJanelleSinclairMostly, yes. I recently discovered I have PMDD. I also have endometriosis and was diagnosed years ago with Bipolar disorder, which I personally think was Pmdd. I refuse to take prescription medication and have been searching for alternatives. Your videos have been extremely helpful to me. I got some chaste Berry & have been taking that during the day and the 5-HTP at night but I'm not sure about l-tyrosine.     I'm only taking it for pms.. only when I pms . 5 days out of the month..before my menstrual cycle...so as needed... I only take 50mg. Works great! But should I take l tyrosine as well? If so, how much? Can I take both at lunch? Or both I'm the morning

    Thank you honey!! Your advice has since my life practically! I just want to know does one interact with the other one if you take them at the same time and cancel the other one out? I read that you shouldn’t take amino acids altogether because L tyrosine and L Phenaline sorry I can’t spell the second time, cancel out the rest! It was in a book by Patrick Holford and he recommends taking five HTP when you want to chill out and taking L tyrosine when you want energy! He says don’t take them together because they will cancel each other out whether he does say there is a need to take one when you take the other one for the reasons you have mentioned in your fabulous video! I want your take on this please?! Thank you for informing everybody and please do not listen to Ungrateful Spiritually unconscious people! LOL!

    @Wilfy Martinez the 10:1 ratio is just a starting guide. If you need more dopamine and feel better on higher levels of tyrosine then the ratio of 675:50 should be fine.

    Is taking 5 htp and L tyrosine long term bad? I have a heart murmur. I don’t want to get on antidepressants because they’re horrible, and I recently started taking them together but I’m scared if I got off of them all of a sudden would I have bad side effects?? Also, does taking them long term do anything bad to the body? Also, can I get serotonin syndrome from taking 5htp & eating foods like salmon 🍣? I’m just overthinking it but I’m terrified of serotonin syndrome. Thank you in advance

    Your thoughts on SAMe please . I take SAMe 400mg and L-Tyrosine in the mornings and 5 HTP in the evenings. It was working for a few years but lately everything seems to be falling apart and my Dr would like me to take multiple pharma meds.

    Can I take tyrosine while being on thyroid medication l-thyroxine 150mcg (at least thats the name here in Germany) for hypothyroitism? It was recommended to me for my thyroid and for my problem with always being tired, but when I took it I felt like negativly on fire and couldnt sleep the whole night. Or maybe it was an interaction with fluoxetine I was on back than 20mg?

    Dr if the patient has anxiety and fatigue but very mild symptoms, only can take the supplements when is at home is ok to have only 1 dose of each supplement. Tyrosine 500 mg before breakfast, and 5 http 100 mg night time? thanks amazing explanations!

    How do I find out if I am deficient in anything? I know that vitamin D is not one of them. But am not sure about minerals and other thing you speak about in the 5htp video.

    Thanks Dr. Janelle I managed to come out of antidepressant with your help. Its been a week without Cymbalta. I have been taking 5HTP 50mg 3 times a day but i still feel confused cannot remember things much so i will add tyrosine from tomorrow onwards. I also have been taking L theanine 500mg twice a day morning and evening. I wonder if its necessary to have them both. Appreciate your help dr. i am a single mum and have struggled 17 yrs with antidepressants i want to look after my daughter who is 16 now. May god bless you.

    I had the same issue with the 5htp and I started taking only one dose right before bed along with Tyrosine, L-Theanine, and GABA.

    I want to quit my antidepressant lexapro and start useing amino acids I also take welbutrin but dont plan on quitting. Can I take both 5htp and l tyrosine with wellbutrin? Also if I start useing 5htp can I stop the lexapro faster? I'm down from 20 to 10 mg but want to just stop at this point

    You got this! I was on lexapro for 3 years and got of just tapering, 20, 10, 7.5, 5, 2.5... each for 2 weeks. I personally feel a lot better of it and am taking Probiotics for gut health, Ltyrosine and i have cut out my caffeine consumption which tremendously helped my anxiety.

    I just get that is meant to be cycled to allow the body to readjust it’s chemical flows, like stop 2 3 weeks see how you doing before restarting. I don’t have the exact science for that but the body does better letting it have a rest cycle from the feedback it’s required from taking the supplement

    As a dopamine deficient individual i supplement with L tyrosine or L phenylalanine. I only use small amounts of tryptophan from time time when i get sudden and unusual sugar cravings. This is the trigger that my serotonin levels are too low. However if i take 5 htp or tryptophan alone then my depression gets so much worse. It takes a lot of time and experimentation to know what works for you

    5 htp was awful for me when I took it before. That was without l tyrosine. I've worried a little that I'd deplete my serotonin taking the l tyrosine alone... I guess I can do similar if i start to see symptoms of seratonin deficiency. It's interesting.

    I wonder if the treatment options for dopamine depletion, levodopa will be more efficient than tyrosine, because tyrosine also needs to be converted to levodopa, while the common enzyme is AADC, AADC converts 5htp and levodopa to serotonin and dopamine

    Plz dr answer my question I m currently taking 5htp with ltyrsoine 200 mg 5htp n 2000mg ltyrosine my mood feels so much better than before but I m experiencing little imbalance sometimes , I was taking before 150 mg 5htp with 1500 mg ltyrosine n I was not feeling good when I started now taking the 200mg 5htp with 2000mg ltyrsosine I felt so so much better in my mood but I don't know should I keep taking both in my this situation or I should take less dosage of ltyrosine because I think this change in my mood is related to my increased 5htp intake .

    Can symptoms of dopamine deficiency be rather caused by lack excess of dopamine than the lack of it. Would the approach/treatment stay the same if the dopamine receptors are damaged?

    Thank you doctor for the video i have a question i recently stop my ssri paroxetine, and its been 7 months off medication now, but i am more anxious and depressed than usual so there is a myth that ssri increase serotonin and decrease dopamine, can i take l tyrosine to boost my dopamine, i m thinking that my dopamine getted lower after ssri.
