I dont understand why people say kyrie is not good at defense. if you can be that good offensively, you understand how defense works. Vice versa with Kawhi, he understood defense really well so it was only a matter of time before he was elite offensively as well.
@DebasedAnon
Ай бұрын
Cause he wasnt good on defense till the end of this season and now the playoffs, same with Luka. I agree with you, the same clowns that claim this era would "dominate the previous ones" because "its so much more athletic" are the same ones claiming you NEED to be athletic for defense. They're probably pissed watching Joker and Luka dominate the league and Luka play fantastic defense with nothing but basketball IQ.
@avidreader6534
Ай бұрын
@@DebasedAnon just cause he wasn’t statistically good defensively means he was a pushover. It only means he started trying to play D. But yea, 98% of people, even hoopers, don’t understand that the game is inverse. If someone is really good offensively, it means they understand the defensive to a high level and can be effective defenders if they wanted to. It’s the reason why what seperates the NBA from other leagues isn’t just offense, but defense as well. It’s a nuanced game that others really don’t get
@DebasedAnon
Ай бұрын
@@avidreader6534 Thats the same thing though... If you're DPOY material but never tried to play serious defense you're still being a bad defender at the time. In Lukas case he was always smart enough to be at least ok on defense but had to preserve his energy for the offense cause he was the only thing keeping the Mavs offense going for years, now that he has help his defense is skyrocketing in quality since the start of the season, same with Kyrie and its probably cause he finally found a place he wants to stay.
@avidreader6534
Ай бұрын
@@DebasedAnon I get why you’re saying. But I don’t get why people chalk it up to them not being good defenders when they clearly know what to do, it’s just that they had to preserve energy. Now that they can have some help, they can try some more on defense. And with their iq, it’s obviously paying off as Dallas is close to making the finals. Good talk tho

Just absurd levels of agility, flexibility, speed, quickness, hand-strength, hand-speed and stamina being shown here. It would be impressive for anyone, but a 32-year-old 13-year NBA vet still having this athleticism and focus is pretty insane. He's always shown flashes of this more than people think, as he's always been maybe the most mobile athlete in the NBA. But seeing him essentially become some kind of bigger, more athletic Kyle Lowry has been astounding to see.

This is the magic of Kyrie and Luka. They can split duties on offense which lets them have the energy to play great defense. Same reason why LeBron's defense was so great in Miami because he had Wade and Bosh. It isn't a coincidence that his defense fell off a cliff after leaving Miami.

I personally have never forgotten Kyrie looked like the best guard on the floor in the NBA finals against the Warriors due in large part to his defense on Steph....Of course, Kyrie had Lebron but Steph was supposed to be the best guard ok the planet and Kyrie looked to be better on both sides of the ball. Obviously, Steph is an all time great and his resume puts him as a borderline top 10 player all time. Im taking him in a draft over kyrie 10 times out 10 because even when steph is struggling to score and getting beat defensively, his gravity as a player is rivaled only by Shaqs which creates offense for the entire team without even needing to touch the ball once and thats incredible considering hes just a small guard who generates all that gravity with his constant offball movement, his super ballhandling abilities and, most importantly, his ability to shoot 3s off the dribble (hes the goat at it) or coming off screens and out of other off-ball actions. But Kyrie is legit, hes one of the more underrated players of all time. He's limited as a player, but what he is great at he is literally savant-level great at it. A title this year makes him a clear top 10 PG of all time, even without an elite playmaking ability and inconsistent defensive performance in his career. He's just that clutch and that great a scorer.

Always here for the Kyrie praise. Coach knows ball
KYRIE IRVING'S DEFENSE will break us out of NORTH KOREA vs. TIMBERWOLVES
Kai's defense has been INCREDIBLE thank you for highlighting it!! Love your Mavs videos #MFFL
Kyrie is building a bridge over the DMZ to lead us to freedom
Kyrie my goat
Kyrie's championship experience is coming to play. Good for him. I do hope he wins another ring and potentially a Finals MVP. He's definitely gonna be top 7 PG of all time if that happens.
Kyrie has been GREAT defensively but DJJ has been the best so far this playoffs.
I dont understand why people say kyrie is not good at defense. if you can be that good offensively, you understand how defense works. Vice versa with Kawhi, he understood defense really well so it was only a matter of time before he was elite offensively as well.

It’s a nuanced game that others really don’t get
@DebasedAnon

@avidreader6534

@@avidreader6534 People dont tend to analyze the game that deep, they'll watch a game here and there and highlights and make their opinion based off the eye test.
The tone in voice between the praising videos of what the mavs are doing right in this series and the criticism of the wolves coaches videos is such a stark difference.
I think this is the most motivated version of Kyrie we've ever seen. He's always been an incredible talent but he's playing with a sense of grit and tenacity that we haven't seen from him before. He's also become an incredible leader.
But seeing him essentially become some kind of bigger, more athletic Kyle Lowry has been astounding to see.
kyrie playing like this, the whole thing is over.
as kyrie irvings biggest fan you just earned yourself a subscriber sir
Irving is the perfect player to put as the last line of defense in a 1-3-1 zone. If you understand zone coverages you know what I mean.

I too now am a believer that the earth round earth id flat earth and not round. Im convinved.
I keep hearing talking heads saying Kyrie is still a mediocre defender. I'm not sure what game they're watching. He has been nails, constantly in position and harassing his cover relentlessly. Just another example of the media talking about what a player USED to be like, instead of what he's doing now. I'm not surprised...
Kyrie irving has been amazing, this shows me he's hungry for another title. He's gone from a 3 level scorer, to a 2-way 3 level scorer
Bro I so enjoy your analysis! Keep up the great work!
Ive said it around allstar break, im most impressed with kyries defensive effort, seems it stays true
You can tell Kyrie has put in work to improve his defense

He's been playing d for years but many act like he can't play d
Kyrie said in an interview iirc that he doesn’t want to be known for his offense in this part of his career, he wants to be known for his defense
This is the magic of Kyrie and Luka. They can split duties on offense which lets them have the energy to play great defense. Same reason why LeBron's defense was so great in Miami because he had Wade and Bosh. It isn't a coincidence that his defense fell off a cliff after leaving Miami.
It’s all just effort and iq, in the regular season, most offensive stars would be just fine with lackluster effort, glad to see Kai thriving in an environment that pushes him to be the best version of him
The 2016 Cavs also mysteriously were able to slow down opposing guards despite being 10th in defensive rating. Kyrie has always, *always* pulled his weight defensively, even if he's never been all-defense. A lot of those fastbreaks were from his steals.
Dude needs these positive videos like a fish needs water. A sanity check after each visit to North Korea.
KYRIE IRVING is bringing back DEMOCRACY to the NBA vs. TIMBERWOLVES | GAME 2
Kyrie Irving has unlocked Gary Payton mode.
Kyrie irving lives in South Korea sources say
KYRIE IRVING’S ELITE DEFENSE has solved my IMPOTENCE vs TIMBERWOLVES

It goes both ways. The Boston Fans and the media went at him when he was injured. Claimed the team is better without him. The Mavericks and Cuban knows how to handle the media and protected him. The Mavs fandom didn’t blame him for missing the play in. They didn’t claim the team played better without him when he was injured. Some (or most) of his mess was his own doing but it does help that someone like Cuban advises him on what not to say bec it can be misinterpreted.

Where does Kyrie rank all time? Is he a top 5 point guard?

Admit it: anybody could guard Gobert. He takes offense off.
Don't want take anything away from Kyrie BUT: These things used to be the standard. It just stands out because we see so much less effort and iq on defense these days.
